You Can’t Turn Off Auto
There was a time when the only way you could turn off auto-renewal for Xbox subscription services like Xbox Live Gold was to call and talk to Microsoft customer service. It’s a lot easier to turn off auto-renewal now, or even cancel your subscription, but the options are buried several menus deep on the Microsoft website, not on your Xbox One.
Turning off auto-renewal for Xbox One subscriptions like Xbox Live Gold isn’t difficult, but you can’t actually do it with your console. Unlike the PS4, where you can cancel a PlayStation Plus subscription directly from a menu on the console, you will find no such option on your Xbox One.
You can access your Microsoft subscriptions on an Xbox One by opening the Guide and navigating to Settings> Account> Subscriptions. This opens up a menu where you can view your active subscriptions.
If you select a subscription, like Xbox Live Gold, you have the option to change the billing method, but there is not an option to cancel or turn off auto-renewal.

Microsoft has announced a price hike for Xbox Live Gold, increasing the price drastically on some membership plans.

The new prices will see changes to the already existing one month, three month and six month models that operate. It appears to only be affecting new members, as pre-existing members are able to renew at the previous price point.
An Xbox Wire post highlighted some of the increased costs, citing a one month subscription to be increasing by $1USD and the three month to be jumping up by $5USD. Six months will see the biggest price increase from $39.99 to $59.99.
Eurogamer has reportedly been told the UK equivalent from a Microsoft representative, which sees one month increasing from £6.99 to £7.99, three months jumping from £17.99 to £21.99, and finally the six month seeing a movement from £29.99 to £42.99.
Xbox Live Gold members will receive a message once the price increase is live in their territory, in which the price will not increase for at least 45 days.
The other option for Xbox owners is to move over to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which couples both Game Pass and Gold membership into one joint subscription. Xbox Game Pass sees multiple games being added on a monthly basis, using a similar style to Netflix.
Microsoft also announced Februarys Games With Gold, which sees five games being included instead of the usual four.

In a bit of a surprising move, Microsoft has removed the option to purchase a 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription from the Microsoft Store digital storefront.
At this time Xbox has decided to remove the 12 month Xbox Live Gold SKU from the Microsoft online Store, Microsoft said in a statement to NW. Customers can still sign up for a 1 month or 3 month Xbox Live Gold subscription online through the Microsoft Store.
The change is now live in the United States, Australia, and other regions though it should be noted that current Xbox Live Gold subscribers can currently renew their subscriptions for 12 months with the traditional discount by logging into their subscription page on the Xbox or Microsoft website. I just did this and Id recommend you do the same as its unclear how long this option will be available. A 6 month membership can also be purchased here.
No reason has been given for this change. It could simply be Microsoft trying to save some money though its possible that the company could have plans to phase out Xbox Live Gold as a standalone service later this year when the Xbox Series X console is released.
