As of 11/15/18 they require you to fill out a refund request form. I got a full refund for a one year subscription of Xbox Live Gold. But I requested the refund exactly one day after I was billed. I dont know if they require you to cancel within a time frame or if they just prorate your refund for amount of time left on your subscription. Try to get a refund regardless.

Microsoft said that users will be able to use entertainment applications free of change starting in June but that a Gold Membership is still required to play online games.

First off, if you have a pre-paid subscription, or your accounts in debt, or the account has been suspended, you arent able to cancel. This applies not just to Xbox subscriptions, but any that fall under Microsofts umbrella, such as those for Office 365 or Skype.
When you do cancel, you can do so either immediately, or by turning off auto-renew. An immediate cancellation will naturally limit your account as soon as youve completed the process, whereas disabling auto-renew will let you use Xbox Live etc. until what would have been the renewal date.
