Subscriptions And Digital Game Pre
You may request a refund for pre-orders and Xbox subscriptions like Xbox Live, but these are usually treated as cancelations, and you wont have to fill out any forms.
For canceling Xbox Live subscriptions, you can turn off recurring billing, and if you qualify for any refunds, you will be offered that option on the Services & subscriptions page in your account.
If you want to use Xbox Live during the trial period but dont want to get charged because you might forget to cancel on time, you can check out the DoNotPay virtual credit card.
In the case of pre-orders, you can cancel up to ten days before the release. If you miss that window, you may still qualify for getting your money back, but you will have to request a refund.
What If A Product I Recently Purchased Goes On Sale
You can refund your purchase for a full refund and immediately re-purchase the product as long as it abides by the above guidelines. We do not consider this to be refund abuse.
If Epic determines you are abusing the refund policy, you may not be eligible for refunds. The policy exists so you can purchase with comfort and make sure you only spend on the games you want to pay for and play!
Issues You Might Experience When Making An Xbox Refund Request
Though Microsofts refund policies for Xbox might seem strict, it is not impossible to get your money back for digital items that qualify as refundable. There is one thing to be careful aboutyou shouldnt abuse the system and treat it like a platform for multiple two-hour demos. In case Microsoft representatives establish that youre abusing your refund rights, they will stop offering them except when legally obliged.
Another common issue that users who request Xbox refunds experience is the inability to locate their purchase in the Order history. In such cases, there are several possible explanations:
- The purchase was made less than 24 hours ago
- The item was bought through a different account
- Your purchase was a pre-order
- Your purchase was a subscription
- Your purchase was a physical Xbox product
- You gifted someone a game

How To Cancel A Pre
One of the best things in the digital age is the ability to pre-order games, allowing you to pre-order the game ahead of its launch. Unfortunately, some games review poorly or are confirmed to be littered with bugs before their release, giving you a bit of buyer’s remorse.
Luckily, there’s an option to cancel pre-orders, ensuring you don’t have to play something you no longer want.
- Step One: Go to your order history on your Microsoft Account.
- Step Two: Find your pre-ordered item.
- Step Three: Select “Cancel item”. You don’t need to submit a refund request and if you’ve been charged, those funds should automatically be refunded to you.

The Xbox ecosystem features thousands upon thousands of games, DLC and in-game purchases, apps, subscription services, and more, all of which are available to players and provide endless ways to have fun. There are times, however, when a purchase doesn’t pan out as expected. If the game or game purchase is broken and doesn’t work, doesn’t deliver what it promised, or simply doesn’t appeal to the purchaser, Microsoft provides methods with which players can seek a refund or cancellation.
Even the best Xbox games can be refunded if you have reason. Players may not always have these options available to them , but players can often get refunds or easily cancel unwanted subscriptions straight from their Xbox console, or through their Microsoft Account online. Here’s everything you need to know about requesting refunds for Xbox games, game purchases, and subscriptions.
How Can I Request Refunds For Games & Game Purchases On Xbox
When investing in the expansive Xbox ecosystem, it’s inevitable that mistakes will eventually be made. A product may be bought that doesn’t work as planned or is genuinely broke you may make a purchase and then realize you bought the wrong thing or made a mistake a child or another Xbox user in your household may accidentally make a purchase from your account and any other reason that would lead you to pursue a refund from Xbox and Microsoft.
Microsoft makes the process of refunding Xbox games and game purchases easy, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any restrictions on using the service. Here’s what you need to know before requesting a refund for an Xbox purchase:
- You have to use the account through which the product was purchased. This rule is fairly obvious, but to request a refund for any Xbox games or game purchase, you need to have access to the account through which the purchase was made. You’ll have to be able to sign into said account through a browser.
- As a side note, Microsoft recommends ensuring your account is secured and that you’re familiar with your security settings so that you have access to your account, but no one else does. This helps protect your account against unwanted purchases

Microsoft Is Adding Self
Microsoft will soon allow self-service refunds for digital purchases on Xbox and Windows 10.
First discovered on Reddit by user gaymerRaver, and since verified by Eurogamer, the new feature is currently in alpha on the Xbox One Preview Programme.
The impending option will let folks get a full refund on any software that’s been used for less than two hours, with the eligibility window expiring 14 days after purchase.
Better yet, these refunds will be self-service. In other words, you won’t have to draft an email or communicate with another human being in order to request a refund. Just like Steam.
There are a few exceptions, however. DLC and Season Passes won’t be eligible, Microsoft noted that “certain Windows 10 apps may not be eligible”, and the tech giant reserves the rights to deny a refund to those it thinks are abusing the system.
It’s not clear what its definition of “abuse” is, and until we get a firm definition it’s best to just use common sense. In other words, don’t assume this means every game effectively has a two hour demo.
“You’ve spoken we’ve listened,” Microsoft said in its Preview Programme update. “In support of offering gamers the freedom of choice, we’re making changes to the Microsoft Store purchase experience by offering customers a simple way to instantly return digital products like games and apps through account.microsoft.com.”

Which Games Are Eligible For Refunds
Microsofts refund system applies to games and apps for Xbox One or Windows 10, but only if theyre purchased through the digital Microsoft Store you cant buy a game from another retailer and try and get a refund from Microsoft, unsurprisingly.
But even if you do buy your game from the Microsoft Store, its worth noting that you cant just get a refund for any purchase you make there are a few requirements you have to meet.
Most importantly, you can only claim a refund if you have a legitimate reason to ask for one either that you purchased the wrong thing by accident, that the game you bought doesnt work, that someone else bought it using your account, that theres an error with your bill, or just if you want to cancel a pre-order. You may need to talk to a customer service rep to explain or prove the situation, and you cant simply claim a refund because you decided you didnt like a game as much as you expected.
Games and apps are only eligible for a refund within 14 days of purchase, and only if youve played less than 2 hours across all accounts you cant sink 40 hours into a massive RPG and then try and get your money back!
Finally, youll have to wait at least one day after the games release date before you request a refund, and you have to have downloaded and launched the game at least once they want to make sure youve actually tried it out first.

How To Request An Xbox Refund
To begin the refund process, youll first need to head to the refund request page on the Xbox support website. Once there, sign in to the Microsoft account you use to play on your Xbox console, and youll then see a list of games eligible for refund.
From there, click the checkbox next to the game you want to refund, and click the highlighted button titled Request a refund. You may see a yellow exclamation mark icon next to your game with the text Request conditional next to it. This will usually show up if you dont meet one or more of the Xbox refund criteria, such as owning a game for longer than 14 days. Note that Microsoft may deny the refund request on this basis.
After you click Request a refund, a new box will appear requesting further information. Youll need to select a reason for the refund request, from these options:
- Accidental purchase
- I didn’t make the purchase
- Cancel pre-order
Each of these options all feature their own dropdown menu, in which youll need to select the specific reason that best matches the above criteria, such as incorrect version purchased or does not match description. Choose the option that best describes your problem to continue.
Take care not to ignore the Additional details field, either. If youre able to describe your issue in further detail it may increase your chances of getting a successful refund. Provide as many details as you feel are necessary, then click Next.
Are Xbox Refunds Guaranteed
As far as digital items are concerned, no. It is entirely possible that Microsoft will deem your request for a refund invalid, for a myriad array of reasons. If you dont fall into the aforementioned criterion, its very likely that Microsoft will refuse to refund your digital purchase.
However, they do guarantee a refund on physical items if those items are returned in the condition your received them in.

How Do You Get A Refund From The Microsoft Store

Just head straight to the Xbox Refund Request Solution and work through the checklist, making sure that youre signed into your Microsoft account and have the relevant order number ready.
You may get a refund immediately, but more likely Microsoft will want to verify the reason for the refund, and under these circumstances, you should be put in touch with a Microsoft rep within 72 hours of applying.
Unexpected Or Inaccurate Charges
To address unexpected charges, first see What to do about unexpected charges from Microsoft. If you don’t see the cause for your unexpected charge, you can select the Contact us link at the top of the page, or you can contact Microsoft Store support.
Note: If a chargeback claim is raised against a payment made to Microsoft, we will assume that the payment was made without your consent and that your personal details have been compromised. If you have any doubts about a payment made to Microsoft, we recommend that you check your order history, or contact Microsoft Support before disputing the charge to prevent an unnecessary chargeback and potential account suspension. If you are certain that a transaction was fraudulent, contact your financial institution to cancel your payment method.
