How To Use AAA Batteries For Your Xbox One Controller

Microsoft just debuted two new Xbox consoles and revised its Xbox Wireless Controller. If you have already pre-ordered next-gen consoles then you must be wondering whether Xbox Series X/S controller can be charged or not. If thats the case then dont worry, Xbox Series X and S controller can easily be charged if it is equipped with the right battery.

Unlike Dual Sense, you can use multiple power delivery methods on Xbox Series X/S, including Xbox One Play and Charge Kit. However, due to the new pads slightly different profile, not all Xbox One controller batteries can be charged through Xbox One Play and Charge Kit.

Common Reasons An Xbox One Controller Won’t Turn On

Most of the problems preventing an Xbox One controller from turning on are related to the batteries or battery contacts, the charge and play kit, firmware problems, or internal hardware faults. Some of these can be fixed at home, and others can’t.

Here are the most common problems that can keep an Xbox One controller from powering up:

  • Batteries: The most common reason an Xbox One controller fails to turn on has to do with the batteries. If the batteries are worn out or in need of a charge, it won’t turn on. It also won’t turn on if the batteries are installed improperly.
  • Battery contacts: The controller won’t turn on if the battery contacts are worn out or bent too much. It also won’t turn on if the batteries don’t make firm contact for any other reason.
  • Charging cable problems: If you use a charge and play kit to charge the controller, the cable may be bad. These cables fail internally, so you can’t necessarily tell it’s bad only by looking at it.
  • Firmware problems: A controller may fail to turn on again when a controller firmware update is interrupted.
  • Internal faults: Sometimes, something is physically broken inside the controller that prevents it from turning on.

If the controller lights up but won’t connect, see What to Do When Your Xbox One Controller Won’t Connect for more in-depth troubleshooting information about that specific problem.

Xbox Series X Rechargeable Battery Is A Huge Step Back

I’ve generally had very complimentary things to say about the Xbox Series X controller, which I actually prefer to the PS5’s DualSense. It may be a very conservative upgrade, but it’s a very conservative upgrade of one of the best controllers ever made.

The Xbox Series X controller is comfortable, intuitive and versatile. The only negative issue is that it uses wasteful, expensive AA batteries and Microsoft’s official rechargeable battery pack, sold separately for $25, doesn’t address this problem nearly as well as it should.

Like the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, the Xbox Series X/S controller uses disposable AA batteries by default rather than internal, rechargeable battery packs, such as those found in the PS3, PS4 and PS5 controllers.

Without belaboring the issue, AA batteries are both wasteful and inefficient, and I’m generally not thrilled that Microsoft has passed what is essentially an additional cost onto the consumer rather than just building it into the price of the controller.

All of this came as a response to a statement made by Duracell UKs Marketing Manager, Luke Anderson, who argued that the main reason for Xbox to ship controllers with batteries and not a built-in battery like its competition was its deal with Duracell. “The deal is for OEM to supply the battery product for the Xbox consoles and also the controllers’ battery. Its a constant agreement that Duracell and Microsoft have in place. It needs to go for a while more” said Anderson in his interview with Stealth Optional.

Andersons theory, as absurd as it sounds, does make some sense because a deal between Microsoft and Duracell does in fact exist, which involves Duracell often tweeting about using its batteries in the Xbox Controllers. In 2020, Duracell also announced a promotion that allowed users of their extra powered battery, Duracell Optimum, to try the Xbox Game Pass for two weeks. The specifics of this deal are still unclear, but Microsoft has consistently denied that they ship controllers with AA batteries because of this deal, but do so to provide a choice to the consumer, which sounds reasonable enough.

RECHARGEABLE BATTERY FOR XBOX ONE WIRELESS CONTROLLER ...

Hi, I have recently taken my Xbox One Controller apart to replace the ABXY rubber mat and when I put it back together it won’t turn on. I can hold the home button down and it’ll turn on but once I release the button it will turn off. Also, I can plug the USB cable from the console into the controller and it works perfectly. If anyone has any answers to why I won’t work properly with batteries I would be grateful.

, Dom, Try another set of good batteries inserted properly, check and clean battery terminals to ensure that are getting a good connection. You said you had the unit disassemble, could you have pinched/broken a wire for the battery terminal, disassemble and check connections. Additional info at troubleshooting link below. Good luck.

If you continue having issues turning on your Xbox One Wireless Controller, check out this Xbox One Wireless Controller Won’t Turn On Problem Page.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

The chosen answer, while helpful in the vaguest ways, was about as much a canned answer for generic electronic issues I could see.

Microsoft has a few known defects in the controllers. One of which is a smoothing capacitor on the board that has a propensity to short out. When this happens it will not power the unit .

If you have it apart then look on the bottom of the board around the lower left of where the D-Pad engages.

I do not think this is your case based on what you have described though.

Xbox Controller Won’t Turn On And Makes Hissing Sound When I Try To Power It On

So I’ve only had this Xbox one controller for a few months and it’s worked fine but now it won’t turn on. The batteries in the controller died so I took them out and put in some fresh ones and the light just kept flashing, keep in mind it was working literally just before I had to replace the batteries. After trying to turn it on a few times with no success I put in 2 more new batteries and this time the light didn’t flash at all so I took them out and put them back in again and then not only did it not turn on but it started to make a hissing/sizzling sound every time I held the home button. So then I opened a new pack of batteries and it was the same problem. I tried unplugging the Xbox and it still didn’t work so I figured maybe for some reason all of the batteries were duds even though they were new so I put the batteries into my old Xbox 360 controller and it worked fine, I tried on a few other devices and there was no issue it’s just with the Xbox one controller that there’s a problem. Idk why this would happen especially since I was just playing with it before I had to switch the batteries and I’ve taken good care of the controller, I’ve never thrown it or hit it or done anything that would mess it up. If anyone could help me with this I’d seriously appreciate it cuz I have no idea what’s going on.

What Batteries Does Xbox 360 Controller Use

The Xbox 360 Wireless Controller can be powered either by AA batteries or by the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack. This article describes how to replace AA batteries. Check Your Xbox One Controller Battery Level On Windows 10

Here’s how to connect your Xbox One Wireless controller to your Windows 10 PC:

1. Go to Settings .2. Go to Devices.3. Go to “Add Bluetooth or other device.”4. Follow the instructions to complete the Xbox One Wireless controller setup.

Ever since my prepaid Xbox Live Gold subscription turned into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, I have been taking full advantage of the new service. Gaming on Windows 10 and Xbox One has been a blast and there are more than enough games to keep me busy. But with all that gaming, one issue I run into a lot is that I don’t often know how much time I have left to play using my Xbox One controller.

When I connect my Xbox One controller to my Surface Book 2, I still can’t see the battery level via the Devices page in Settings. I can see the battery level of my mouse, but why not my controller? It is frustrating that Microsoft left out such a small, but very important detail. The Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10 does show you how much battery is left on your Xbox One controller, but only gives you a general level of low, medium, or full.

Instead, I have to rely on a separate Windows 10 app to see my Xbox One controller’s battery life. it’s called Xbox Accessories. In order to use the app, you need to connect your Xbox One Wireless controller to your Windows 10 PC, here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Devices
  • Add Bluetooth or other device
  • Follow the instructions to complete the Xbox One Wireless controller setup

How To change the Batteries in the Xbox One Controller

Here are some troubleshooting tips and solutions for a range of Xbox One controller issues:

  • Check the batteries. Remove the battery compartment on the back of the controller. Remove each battery and verify it’s inserted in the correct direction. If it was installed incorrectly, put it back in the correct direction. If both batteries are installed correctly, install a pair of new batteries.

Don’t take batteries out of a different device. To be certain the problem isn’t the batteries, use a brand new pair right out of the package, or a pair of freshly charged ones.

  • Check the battery contacts. Instead of using springs like some electronic devices, the Xbox One controller uses metal tabs that bend in slightly when you install the batteries. These tabs can become permanently bent if too much force is applied, and can get stuck or weaken over time. Remove the battery cover and the batteries, and examine the contacts on the right side of the compartment. The contacts should extend at an angle. If either is bent in, use a small screwdriver or another prying tool to bend it back out carefully.

Don’t attempt to pry the contacts with the batteries installed. Don’t apply excessive force. If you’re uncomfortable with this, ask someone who has more experience with this type of work for help.

  • Update the firmware. Xbox One controllers rely on firmware to work correctly. If it gets corrupted, or an update is interrupted by turning off the console, the controller won’t turn on.

Do Aa Batteries Last Longer Than Rechargeable Battery Packs

Yes, in fact they do. The average lifespan of AA batteries in an Xbox controller is roughly 40 hours. The average lifespan of the most common rechargeable battery pack, the Xbox Play and Charge Kit, is only 30 hours. The Play and Charge kit’s battery life decreases over time too. Xbox Support even recommends AA batteries over a rechargeable alternative.

Dont Bother With The Play And Charge Kit

Microsoft sells a rechargeable battery pack made especially for the Xbox One, the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit, which replaces your AA batteries with a lithium-ion battery pack that you charge using a Micro USB cable. Connecting the cable to your console also allows you to connect the controller without syncing it wirelessly.

The charge packs lithium-ion battery can get up to 30 hours of battery life and charges in four hours. Thats fine, but its nothing compared to what you can get with other rechargeable batteries. The Play and Charge Kits battery is only 1400mAh just slightly above the PlayStation 4s pack while AA alkaline batteries can go all the way up to 3000mAh.

While it sounds nice, using a charging cable instead of replacing batteries isnt as great as it sounds. Unless you want to charge the battery exclusively through the Xbox One, you need another charging block with a USB port. Also, the battery pack will be completely useless for anything other than your Xbox One controller.

Third-party charging stations can eliminate the need for another charger, but its battery still isnt up to snuff. At only 1100mAh, it holds a smaller capacity than even the cheapest AAA batteries, and it will take you more than two hours to completely charge your pack.

Why Is My Xbox Controller Blinking And Not Connecting

Check the batteries on your Xbox One controller

The flashing light on your Xbox controller may be an indication that it has a low battery. If you know your batteries are fully charged and the light is still blinking, pop the batteries out, wait 15 seconds, and then put them back in to see if that fixes the issue.

How To Put Batteries Into A XboxOne Controller

Unlike Sonys DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers for the PS4 and PS5, Microsoft has stuck with replaceable batteries for the Xbox Series X and S. This means you can easily replace the battery pack in a few years when it starts to show its age.

How Long Can Xbox Controllers Run On Low Battery

When your Xbox controller reaches critically low battery, your Xbox will notify you on your display. After that point, you have about 30 minutes to find new batteries. Soon your Xbox will give you another warning by flashing the middle X logo and shutting off even if you’re in the middle of a game.

Don’t risk losing an SND round in Call of Duty or crashing your car in Forza due to an unexpected controller outage. Stock up on AA batteries for as low as $0.50 each when you buy in bulk from Battery Products.

So Why Does The Xbox Series X Controller Still Use Aa Batteries

Xbox’s controllers have always shipped with a pack of AA Duracell batteries. Unlike the PlayStation controllers, Xbox players need to buy a rechargeable battery kit separately. This according to Xboxs partner director of program management, Jason Ronald, is an intentional decision because, it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarizing and there is a strong camp that really wants AAs. So just giving flexibility is the way to please both people. You can use a rechargeable battery pack, and it works just like it does on the Elite, but it is a separate thing. He continued to explain that the divide between gamers who wanted rechargeable batteries and AA batteries is at about fifty-fifty.

In the same interview with Digital Foundry in March 2020, Ronald also said that the user of batteries allows for longer shelf life for the controller, as these can be easily replaced while internal cell units – like the ones found in the DualShock 4 on PS4 – eventually wear out, forcing players to buy a new controller. In a country like India, there are shops that will replace the internal DualShock battery for you, but it isnt official and hence not advisable.

Why Should You Get Rechargeable Batteries

How to Change Xbox One Controller Batteries

In the long run, picking up a pair of rechargeable batteries for your Xbox One will save you a ton of money. Packs of regular AA batteries can run anywhere between $1020, and having to buy them regularly can be a surprisingly expensive endeavor. Solutions that allow you to use rechargeable batteries only cost slightly more, and ensure that you won’t ever need to buy batteries for gaming again, thus taking that financial strain off your budget.

Another great reason to invest in rechargeable batteries is that they’ll take up less space in your home and are safer. Large battery packs can be big and bulky, and if you don’t have that much free space, it can be a pain to deal with. Also, the more batteries you have, the greater risk there is of losing one of them. Batteries including battery packs can be dangerous, charged or not, especially if a pet or young child puts their mouth on them. If you have fewer batteries lying around, your home will be safer overall.
