Xbox on Windows 10 also acts as a perfect companion to the core Xbox One console experience. Gamers can use the app as a digital keyboard. Streaming frees Xbox One games from the confines of the living room, allowing users to take their favorite titles around the house on their Windows PC.
The entire thing is a bit complicated, but also the most exciting thing Microsoft has done in the PC gaming space for a long, long time.

Stream Xbox Games To Your Pc
To play your Xbox games on a laptop or desktop, you can stream them through the pre-installed Xbox Console Companion on Windows 10. Unfortunately, this only supports Xbox One consoles for the time being, so owners of the latest Xbox Series X and S are out of luck for now. However, Microsoft is currently working on a new app that will support both xCloud and local streaming from the new consoles.
Open the app and select the Connection option near the bottom of the left sidebar. . You should see your Xbox listed in the main window click on it and power it on, if it isn’t already running, and then click the Stream button to begin playing. You’ll want an Xbox controller hooked up to your PC as well.
If you need to adjust the streaming quality, head to Xbox Console Companion’s Settings in the sidebar, click the Xbox One tab, and change the Video Encoding Level. Microsoft recommends Low if you’re on a 2.4GHz wireless network, Medium if you’re on a 5GHz wireless network but far away from your devices, or High if you’re on Wi-Fi with a very strong connection. If you’re connected over Ethernet, try Very High for the full 1080p/60fps experience.
How To Play The Xbox Cloud Gaming Beta On Pc
In order to play the Xbox Cloud Gaming Beta on PC, you will need to use a controller. Unfortunately, none of the titles I tested were able to use mouse and keyboard control schemes. So first, connect a compatible controller either through USB or Bluetooth to your PC. Once youre connected, visit this site. This page should immediately boot up, and you should be able to view the Xbox Cloud Gaming Beta menu above. If you instead see an invite-only message, please visit our troubleshooting guide here. You can full-screen your browser by pressing F11 on your keyboard, which makes for a much more immersive gaming experience, but navigating the menu in this mode seems to be buggy, and as such you should navigate the menu with your keyboard and mouse to select your game, and full screen it after. You can also full screen the application by clicking the ellipsis icon in the top left. Once youve chosen your game and your save has synced, you should be ready to play.

Macs Aren’t Officially Invited But They Might Still Sneak In
Microsoft describes Xbox Cloud Gaming as “for Windows 10 PCs and Apple phones and tablets.” Notice what’s missing there? MacBooks and Mac desktops. Naturally, I tried it on a Mac. Chrome was never able to launch a game, as it refused to recognize my controller. I had better luck with Safari, but it was still inconsistent. Performance also felt choppier than on one of the officially supported platforms.
Xbox Game Streaming Now Part Of Game Pass App On Android
From Sept. 15, 2020, Microsoft’s cloud gaming service, known as xCloud previously, became part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and is built into the Xbox Game Pass app on Android. Folks on iOS, Mac, Windows, and Linux can also take part, with Xbox Game Streaming available through the browser.
It adds another tick in the value box to Game Pass Ultimate over regular Game Pass, too. Games are added to the cloud library on a slightly different schedule to the console and PC, but regular additions are coming along.
Additionally, Microsoft has been working on dedicated touch controls for some of these games allowing you to play on your phone or tablet without the need for a controller. Minecraft Dungeons was the first, but the feature has since come to titles such as Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Dead Cells.

Youll need to own the digital copy of the game you want to play. Unlike the streaming solution above, you won’t need to be close to your Xbox for this to work you’ll be running the game directly on your PC, but without having to buy an additional copy. The downside is that your computer will have to be beefy enough to do the heavy lifting of running the actual game on its own.
Xbox Play Anywhere works with any Play Anywhere title the problem is that, at this moment, there arent a whole lot of Xbox Play Anywhere titles. Some of the most popular titles are Sea of Thieves, Gears 5, Subnautica and Forza Horizon 4.
Access Game Pass Games On Pc Via Microsoft Store
All of the PC games that are currently playable on Game Pass can be found in the Microsoft Store, Windows 10s app store, which is on every Windows 10 computer by default no extra installation necessary.
As I mentioned earlier, this is the slightly more confusing method for finding Game Pass games that work on PC. I recommend downloading the Xbox app listed above, but this option works if youre in a rush and dont want to deal with a download.
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- On the Store homepage, click the menu button on the top right section of the window, then select My Library to see all of the content that you own.
- Look for Xbox Game Pass and click on that option. All of the games included with Game Pass will display.
Unfortunately, this view displays all Game Pass games, including ones that can only be played exclusively on the Xbox console. And there isnt a way to filter the view to make Xbox One games disappear.

How To Stream Games From Your Xbox To Your Windows Pc
Set up remote play on your console:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features
- Select the Enable remote features checkbox
- Under Power mode, select Instant-on

- Its a good idea to save frequently while playing remotely. If you get disconnected from your console, you could lose progress in your game

- Only one person at a time can play remotely, even if others are set up to connect remotely or locally
- Microsoft Store and in-game purchases, and backward compatibility are disabled during remote play with the Xbox mobile apps
- Currently, external applications on your console like Edge and Hulu are blocked while using remote play
For games located on your home console, you’ll find that your device mirrors the homepage of your Xbox when you’ve linked to two devices so you can jump right back into your last played titles or head into your available library.

However, Microsoft doesnt include a dedicated Xbox Play Anywhere section in the Microsoft Store. Searching for games using the play anywhere term produces mixed results. Instead, check the list of compatible games on Microsofts website to see if your favorite falls under the Xbox Play Anywhere banner.
