Offline splitscreen multiplayer is working just fine without a Gold membership. I was playing splitscreen just yesterday with two local only profiles with no problems at all.Make absolutely certain that the “online game” optiion is unchecked . IF the online game is checked, only Gold memberships or their associated Guest temporarily profiles will be able to join the game. This is as it should be since Microsoft does not grant online access to Silver Live membership profiles and local non-Live profiles .

Quote from LadysarajaneI have an odd split screen problem. My nephew created a game, and he is silver membership. I joined him and I have gold membership. Had no problem first day we played. Second day, we did the same thing, however, when I joined I found I could not move and my name that is usually up on the split screen wasn’t visible and I cannot get it to reappear. I found my controller had defaulted and I had to reset all settings especially the sensitivity.

Minecraft: How To Play Split
In Minecraft on the Xbox 360, one of the great benefits to playing on the console is that it supports drop in/drop out split-screen play. If you love couch co-op as much as I do, then youll love this feature.
There are a couple requirements that a lot of people dont realize immediately however, and that is that you must be playing via HD with a display of at least 720p, so either using an HDMI cable, or Component cables .
With either cable, you need to check and make sure youre using at least 720p or higher. Even with an HDMI cable or Component cable, having your settings at 480p wont work.
To change your settings, go to the Settings tab at the very right and then select Console Settings, and Display. Depending on what your TV supports, set it to at least 720p. Your screen may go back for a few seconds, but if its compatible with your TV then it should come back and ask if you want to keep these settings.
Once you have the right cable and display settings, youll be able to simply press the Start button on a second controller to start a split-screen game.
