Fortnite is free to play, right? Not necessarily on all platforms. While its officially free to play on PC from the Epic Games Store, players on Xbox must have an Xbox Live subscription to access multiplayer in Fortnite.

Xbox locks its online multiplayer content behind Xbox Live Gold. There are two tiers to Xbox Live: free and Gold. If youre looking to play online, youre going to need to pay for that Gold membership. There are a few other upgrades available, including the Game Pass and Ultimate, but if you only want to go online to play with friends, Xbox Live Gold is the cheapest option.

Sony, on the other hand, does not require PlayStation Plus, the Sony equivalent of Xbox Live, to play Fortnite multiplayer. Similarly, Nintendo also doesnt charge its players a fee to play with their friends in Fortnite on Switch. Nintendo does have a subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online, but Fortnite remains free to play even without it.

Linking Epic Games And The Xbox Network

Before you can start playing Fortnite on your Xbox Series X or S, you still need to link your Microsoft and Epic Games accounts. This is an easy one-time process that will ensure that when you play Fortnite on your Xbox Series X or S, your progress will be saved in the cloud and accessible when you play on other platforms. If youve previously played on another platform, linking your accounts will also give you access to all of your old stuff.

Once you have created and linked your Epic Games account with your Microsoft account, youre ready to start playing Fortnite on your Xbox Series X or S as long as you have an Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. If there are other games in the queue already, your Xbox will download those first unless you manually change the order. What You Need To Know

• Earlier, Microsoft announced the price of Xbox Live Gold would be increased.
• This price hike has just been reversed.
• Additionally, Xbox Live Gold is no longer required for free-to-play games.

Earlier today, Microsoft announced the price of Xbox Live Gold was being increased, with a six month subscription going for $60. This led to a large outcry, including from our own Xbox lead Jez Corden, who called it “the worst deal in gaming.”

Microsoft has just announced that the price hike is being cancelled. Additionally, Xbox Live Gold will no longer be required for free-to-play games, such as Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone. This latter change is being worked on but will be coming sometime “as soon as possible in the coming months.”

Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate are staying unchanged, meaning they’ll deliver the same benefits as before.

This change was sudden and brings Xbox Live Gold closer in line with PlayStation Plus, which has not been required for playing free-to-play online games. Halo Infinite is set to release sometime in Fall 2021 and when it does, the multiplayer will be free-to-play. Now, players will no longer need to pick up Xbox Live Gold in order to enjoy it, making it truly free.
