Xbox One Powers Down Unexpectedly
A small number of users have reported that their Xbox One is turning off unexpectedly. This is a separate issue from the system not powering up.
This may be a malfunction, but there are other causes that anyone can fix. Before you rush off to contact Microsoft and tell them your console is broken, try these steps to see if the issue can be resolved on your end.
- Check the ventilation on the system. If it is overheating, you should get a warning message before the system shuts down. If you do, turn off the console and wait at least an hour. Make sure the Xbox One has enough ventilation and try again. If this persists, contact Microsoft.
- Check the light on the power brick. If you notice the light is flickering or black, then this is most likely a power issue.
- Check to see if your Xbox One is set to turn off automatically. Head to Settings, then select Power & Supply, then choose Turn Off After. Choose the Dont Turn Off Automatically option and you are set.
- Make sure the AC outlet your Xbox One is plugged into is functioning properly.

How To Take Apart An Xbox One Controller
Before you can take apart your Xbox One controller, find a clean and clear workspace that’s well lit. You will also need to obtain the following tools if you don’t already have them:
- T-8 safety Torx
- Prying tool
You can use a Torx bit in a driver or with a socket wrench, or use a dedicated Torx driver, but it has to be a T-8 safety Torx. You can tell the difference between a regular Torx and a safety Torx by the small hole found in the tip of a safety Torx. Without this small hole, a regular T-8 Torx will not fit into the Xbox One controller screws.
For the prying tool, you can use anything that’s thin enough to fit inside the gap between the controller housing and the end covers. Try to use a plastic tool if possible to avoid damaging the housing of your controller.
Here’s how to take apart your Xbox One controller:
Use a prying tool to gently separate the right or left grip cover.
Once the covers have started to separate, you can finish carefully pulling them off by hand.
Repeat the process with the other grip cover.
Remove the battery cover.
If your controller has never been taken apart, the sticker inside the battery compartment will be intact. You will need to push through the sticker with your Torx bit or cut it away to access the hidden screw.
You are now ready to remove the screws, starting with the hidden screw inside the battery compartment. Use a T-8 safety Torx bit, and be careful to properly seat it and apply even pressure to avoid stripping the screw.
How To Open An Xbox One S
Remove the sticker from the console, using either a pair of tweezers or your finger.
Continue to work around the sides of the console using the prying tool, detaching the clips built into the base. A fair amount pressure must be applied to detach them, though be careful not to damage nearby ports. Firm clicking sounds will be made when each of these clips is detached. A metal interior casing will be exposed once the base has been removed.
Remove the six green screws located across the console’s inner casing, using a TR10 Torx security screwdriver. This will detach all internals from the white plastic casing that surrounds the console. Ensure these screws are kept in a safe location, as they are required to reassemble the device later on.
Flip the console over, with the fan pointing upwards.

- Insert a flathead screwdriver or spudger into the space between the back-left corner of the console and the plastic grille on the left side of the console, then gently pry the grille away from the console. It helps to use a plastic tool rather than a metal tool here, since the grille is made of relatively delicate plastic.

Understanding Upnp In Gaming
Ports are digital channels for your router, used for sorting incoming and outgoing internet traffic. UPnP essentially allows applications to forward ports automatically, avoiding the hassle of manual “port forwarding.” Although they often achieve the same end result, UPnP allows the console to request a port seamlessly, rather than requiring specific port numbers to be entered manually. And for many, it’s a simple flick of a switch.
You should note that UPnP has seen heavy criticism in the past, due to a long list of security flaws associated with the technology. Malicious programs can leverage UPnP vulnerabilities, simply as a result of its open nature. So there might be some related security risk here. The technology is also far from standardized, meaning implementations can vary between routers, especially on older or less reputable models. It’s a case of slightly relaxing security for convenience, though generally, the risk isn’t high for home users.
To maintain higher levels of security, port forwarding only creates specific port maps but requires a bit of manual work.

Xbox One Cannot Properly Read Discs
While it isnt as disturbing as hearing a disc grinding in your console, an Xbox One that doesnt read discs is not ideal, especially if your library primarily consists of physical games. Some users have reported consoles that fail to read certain games, or even have a widespread problem with reading all discs.
Luckily, isolated disc errors arent always brought on by damaged discs, and if your disc drive is having issues reading your games, it doesnt necessarily mean your console is shot. If neither of the solutions below work, however, you may need to call Microsoft or take the disc in question back to your retailer if its under warranty.

How To Do A Power Reset On Your Xbox One
Once it becomes clear the Xbox One itself is the problem, it’s time to try a power reset the system’s internal power supply might be at issue, and note that we are here discussing the Xbox One X and S consoles we’ll cover the original Xbox One in a moment.
1. To do a power reset, disconnect the power cable from the rear of the console and wait a full ten seconds. Now, reconnect the cable, then press the Xbox button on the front of the system.

Xbox One Wont Power On
Another issue being reported by users is that the system wont power on, or if it does, it is for a limited time only and then quickly shuts off. This could be the console itself, but it is more likely the power brick. It could also be the internal power supply.
The first step is always to simply check to make sure everything is connected properly. Once that is done, the next step is to verify that your power brick is working properly. All Xbox One power bricks have a light on them to signify they are receiving electrical current. If you see a solid white or solid orange light, the power supply is working properly. If there is no light or it flickers, it needs to be replaced. Before you contact Microsoft though, try these quick fixes.

Stuck On Splash Screen
When fully booting, the Xbox One can take a long time up to 10 minutes, in fact. Were referring to turning on your Xbox One from being completely powered off, not from rest mode. When booting, a green screen with the Xbox logo will hang for a few minutes before the UI comes up. If youve been waiting 10 minutes or longer, youll need to perform a hard reset.
Before getting to the hard reset, note that doing so will erase all accounts, save data, and any other data stored on the system. If youre an Xbox Live Gold member, your save data is probably in the cloud. If you havent had a chance to sync it yet, try powering down the console by holding the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds. Then, if you have access, sync or back up your save data before performing the reset. Otherwise:
Remove All The Green Screws
Xbox made things easy for us by coloring all of the screws that need to be removed green. You’ll need your security-bit-set for this. Five long screws extend through the entire console to secure it to the other half of the case. Removing these will allow us to separate the hardware from the case entirely.
