Xbox Family Settings Mobile App

Microsoft has also recently introduced into preview the Xbox Family Settings app for iPhone and Android. The Android version can be downloaded by anyone from the Google Play Store while the iPhone version was only opened up to the first 10,000 applicants through Testflight.

It doesn’t do anything you can’t already do through the web portal as detailed above, but what it does is allow you to apply and monitor settings and activity from your smartphone, removing the need to be in front of a PC.

It’s still a work in progress but it’s a pretty handy thing to have, and in conjunction with the main Family Safety app which is also in preview gives you access to everything you need wherever you are.

Setting Parental Controls On Your Xbox:

Block Games By Age Rating

Via the Xbox

  • On your Xbox console, manage parental controls by selecting Settings and then choosing Privacy and online safety.
  • Select a family member to customize their individual settings.
  • Adjust controls for what your children can see by setting Content restrictions. These settings use a numerical scale that matches what would be considered appropriate for a certain age based on ESRB game ratings and other content rating systems.
  • For example, if you set your childs content restrictions to 11, she will be able to play games rated up to E10+ but not T or M.
  • Content restrictions make it easy for parents to choose one setting and control the games, movies, TV and music that are appropriate for their children.
  • On the Xbox Family Settings App

  • Select your child under Your Family.
  • Select Content Restrictions.
  • Make sure Filter Inappropriate Content is toggled to the On.
  • Select Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm the age of your child.
  • This setting will block potentially inappropriate games based on the ESRB rating information. For example, if your child is 9-years-old they will be able to play games with the E for Everyone rating assignment. If they are 11-years-old they will have access to games rated E for Everyone and Everyone 10+, and so on.
  • Setting Spending Limits

    Via the Xbox

  • Sign in with an adult account on the console.
  • Choose the childs account on which youd like to set the limits.

    Hi Frost,

Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. Unfortunately it is not possible to force a child account to become an adult account on Xbox Live. Changing the Microsoft Account profile age will not change the account and give adult permissions to the child account. An adult account would need to be set up separately by the parent and add the child account to a Microsoft Family group and then manage the child account while logged into the parent account to allow adult permissions on a child account. A child account cannot make any Xbox Live privacy settings without an adult account. If you already have an adult account, sign intofamily.microsoft.com. For further instructions on how to set up a family group and then manage the child account’s privacy settings, please read the following support articles:

How To Change Your Xbox Profile Age

Xbox Live determines your age by the birth date you give when you create an account. Microsoft doesn’t provide a way to change that date, short of starting over with a new account, but you can promote a child account to an adult account as long as your birth date indicates that you actually are an adult. With an adult account, you can buy games, add friends and manage your own privacy settings without the help of another user. If you have an Xbox One, your account promotes automatically the next time you log out and in after you turn 18. On the 360, however, you have to make the change manually.

    Hi Brookelynn,

Your Xbox Live account age will be based from the Date of Birth that you entered when you created your Xbox Live profile online. Once the account reaches the age of 18 years old, it will automatically change to adult.

If you accidentally set up an incorrect Date of Birth on the account, you have to wait for the account to become an adult or create a new account with the correct Date of Birth. However, if your account shows the correct Date of Birth and the system recognizes it as child account, you can promote the child account to adult by adding a payment instrument and a billing information to your Microsoft Account. You can go to thislink and follow the steps to add a payment instrument to your account.
