The Different Types Of Nat
NAT Types are a way of categorising NAT. There are three types and each dictates how good an online experience you will have. You can usually see which NAT type you have in the pre-game lobby of online games, but if thats not an option, you can also find out by heading to the network settings on your console. We go into that in more detail later.
Below is a table where you will find the compatibility issues with differing NAT types and may explain why youre having problems connecting with other players.
Open NAT: This is the ideal NAT type. With an Open NAT, you should have no issue connecting to other players, as well as being able to chat and party up with players with no problem. You are also able to host multiplayer games with people of any NAT type.
Moderate NAT: While acceptable under most circumstances, it is by no means an ideal NAT type. With a moderate NAT type, you may find that your connection to games is slower, game lag may increase and in most circumstances, you wont be host.
Strict NAT: This is the worst NAT type available. You will only be able to connect with players who have an open NAT, and even then, you might have problems with chat and game connectivity. Game lag will be worse and you will often find yourself being disconnected during gameplay.
Checking Your Xbox’s Nat
What Does Nat Type Failed Mean
PlayStations NAT Type error message
NAT Type failed is Sonys default message for any networking error on the PlayStation 4. Typically, this means that your router was unable to perform NAT on your PlayStations outgoing connection.
To fix the NAT Type failed error message you can manually setup your PlayStations connection to the internet.
To do this, get your PS4 IP address by navigating to Settings > Network > View Connection Status.
Then obtain your networks IP address, default gateway, subnet mask, and DNS Server. This can be found by searching cmd in a Windows device and selecting command prompt. Then type in ipconfig/all to view the necessary network information.
If you prefer macOS go to System Preferences > Network. Select your active connection and click Advanced. Locate the TCP/IP button and the required information should appear.
On your PS4, select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection and choose Custom. Input all the information you collected in the previous steps.
You will now be assigned a NAT Type.

The steps below provide an overview of port forwarding, although the exact steps may vary between router models and manufacturers.
Select the Advanced settings tile.
Manually assign an IP address to your Xbox console using the previously retrieved IP and MAC addresses. This action again varies between models, so look for specifics on your router.

How To Change Your Nat Type On Xbox One

If your NAT Type is Moderate or Strict, this will likely explain any connectivity issues that youre experiencing. However, there are a couple of easy ways to try to change your NAT Type without the fiddly last resort of messing with your router settings.
- Go to the Settings menu and navigate to Network settings. Select Test NAT Type and refresh if necessary.
- Do a hard reset on your Xbox One by pressing and holding the power button. Once your console has rebooted, re-test your multiplayer connection in Network settings. This should renew your UPnP leases and boost your NAT Type.
- If that doesnt work, head to Network settings and select Advanced settings. Now select Alternate port selection and switch from Automatic to Manual. Youll see a list of different port numbers try selecting different ones to see if any of them provide you with an Open NAT Type.
Finally, to boost your chances of securing an Open NAT Type whenever you log on, enable the Energy Saver power mode on your Xbox. Head to the Settings menu and select General, then Power mode & startup. In the Power mode option, turn off Instant On and enable Energy-saving.
This will result in longer startup times, but it means your Xbox will renew its UPnP lease every time you power on.

How To Open Nat Type On Xbox One
With todays focus on online features and multiplayer, you want your connection to be as smooth and uninhibited as possible. Part of that is checking your systems NAT type, which can affect everything from your connection speeds to even what youre able to do while on your Xbox One. Setting your NAT type to open is ideal, as itll allow you to chat with other players and join games without a problem. However, your Xbox One might be set to a strict NAT type, which can restrict certain features.
First off, youll want to check your NAT type on your Xbox One, just to see if you even need to do anything. Go to Settings and open up Network Setting. Youll see your current NAT type on the settings, and if it says open already youre good, you dont need to do anything. If it isnt open what you can do is put your Xbox One in DMZ, basically outside of the boundaries of your router so it isnt bound to strict settings. If you put your PC into DMZ it could be problematic as youd potentially be opening it up to viruses, but for a game system its completely fine.
First off youll need to find out the IP Address of your Xbox One. You can do this by checking your network settings on your PC and finding the IP Address of your Xbox One. Alternatively, you can simply go to Network Settings on your Xbox One, then go to Advanced Settings, select IP Settings, and find your IP Address on that page.

Nat Type Is Important For Online Players
Changing NAT type on an Xbox Series X|S is a simple process. To start, simply press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide. From there, navigate to the General settings in the Profile & System menu, and select Network Settings. From there, select the Advanced Settings, choose the Alternate Port Selection, and then change the Automatic option to Manual. You will see a selection of port numbers, which you can select and test individually to determine which one is correct. As the Xbox Series X|S operating system is functionally similar to the Xbox One, these directions can also apply to Microsoft’s last-gen machine.
According to Microsoft, selecting the right NAT type is important for Xbox gamers who want their online gaming experiences to be unrestricted. A Strict NAT will only allow you to play multiplayer games with those who have an Open NAT type, but you will not be able to host games. A Moderate NAT will allow you to play multiplayer with some players, and you generally will not be able to host a match. An Open NAT offers the ability to play and host multiplayer games with players on any type of NAT, and this feature is essential for experiencing online multiplayer and party chat in an unrestricted way.
