Add More Storage Space To Xbox One With An External Drive

How to get MORE STORAGE on Xbox One in 2021

Xbox One games are crazy huge, and eventually, youll run out of drive space. Heres how to add an external one so you can play the games you want.

If you own an Xbox One and are even a moderate gamer, youll inevitably come to a point where you need more storage space. Heres a look at how to add more storage for the crazy huge Xbox One games you want to play.

With Xbox Gold, you get the Games with Gold program that gives you three to four free games each month. Plus, Xbox Game Pass is an incredible value for $9.99/month and gives you access to over a hundred premiere games. However, you still need to download those huge files. Games you download for Xbox One are enormous. The average size of a game is 35 GB or more. Since the Xbox One is essentially a PC and runs Windows 10, you dont have to purchase an official Xbox expansion drive. You can use an extra stick or external drive you have available.

Note:

Seagate Desktop 8tb External Hard Drive

If you have loads of games to store, take a look at this desktop Seagate drive for plenty of space. 8TB should be enough for almost anyone to keep their entire Xbox game collection on, and it’s still relatively affordable.

Since this is a desktop drive, it’s not powered over USB like the other options. You’ll need to plug it into a power outlet instead. It’s also larger than portable drives, so make sure you have some extra room for it.

How Does Xbox One Cloud Storage Compare To The Competitors

Xbox One owners know their console isnt the only option out there. Its hard to think about the console without its main competitors in the picture. With Sony being as big of a tech juggernaut as Microsoft, and the PC gaming market being a world of its own, it is worth looking at how Xbox One cloud storage compares to the competition.

With Microsofts standard OneDrive, which includes 15GB of free space on all Microsoft devices including Xbox One consoles, users have a great setup ready as soon as they power up their console. Compare this to how Sony handles cloud storage, through their acquisition of Gaikai. While technically not a cloud storage platform in the traditional sense, their system also streams content from Sonys servers to the console.

There are plenty of cloud storage platforms on PC. This includes dedicated platforms for gaming services like Steam and the Blizzard portal. The downfall when it comes to PC storage is that it isnt integrated directly for gaming unless you go through a dedicated gaming portal. Sure, you could configure other types of cloud platforms to work with games saves, but youll need to understand which files you need to keep track of and do this manually. For some people, this is too cumbersome.

The easy, Microsoft-approved way to expand your Xbox Ones hard drive space is to add an external hard drive. This means youll be able to keep everything you have stored on the internal 500 GB hard drive while still adding as much extra storage space as you want.

To set up an external hard drive, you have to make sure it satisfies these requirements:

  • You dont need anything on it
  • It has a capacity of at least 256 GB
  • It uses USB 3.0

Once you have your external hard drive and youre sure you dont need anything thats on it, just plug it into a USB port on your Xbox One .

It may take a moment, but the system will prompt you with a window that says Set up external storage? Select Format storage device, and the console will do the rest.

Thats it. Its a cinch. And if you still manage to burn through all of your extra hard drive space, you can attach another external hard drive for even more space.

Happy gaming.

Modern consoles make it difficult to bring a game over to your friend’s house to play, due to account restrictions and huge file sizes. However, you can use your external hard drive to easily play installed games on another Xbox One.

The only requirement is that you’re logged into the account that owns the games. As long as that’s the case, you can enjoy the Xbox games installed to your external drive on a friend’s console. If the games are disc-based, you’ll also need to insert the disc to play them.

Format The Hard Drive For Game Installations

Head to Settings, then System and then choose the Manage Storage option. Youll then see your internal hard drive on the left-hand side, and the new external one on the right.

At the moment, you can only store pictures, music and video files on the external hard drive, so youll need to format it in order to be able to store games on it.

Select it and youll be presented with a dropdown menu. Choose the Format for Games & Apps option and then select Format Storage Device.

Youll be asked to give it a name, and then decide whether you want it to be the default installation drive or stick with the internal hard drive for now. You can always change it at a later date.

If you stick with the internal hard drive, as soon as it fills up content will automatically start spilling over into your external hard drive.

But if you start storing your games on your external hard drive, you can then take that drive to a friends house and start playing your own games over there if you sign into Xbox Live first anyway.

Once youve made your choice, select the Format Storage Device option again.

Add External Drive To Xbox One For More Storage

First, fire up your Xbox One and plug in the drive you want to use into an available USB port on the console. After that, youll be prompted to select how you want to use the drive either for music and videos storage or for apps and games. Since Im going to use it for games, it needs to be formatted to the proprietary Xbox One format select Format storage device.

Then you will be prompted to type in a name for the drive using the onscreen keyboard.

You will be asked if you want all games to be installed on this drive moving forward or still use the original drive. For my purposes, I chose to use the original, but you can change it later in Settings.

After that, youre ready to format the drive. In my case it was a new drive and formatting it took less than 10 seconds, but your mileage may vary.

After the drive has been successfully formatted, head to Settings > System > Storage to view and manage your new disk. From there you can see how much space is used on a disk, view a disks content, and transfer items from one drive to another.
