Connecting Bluetooth Headphones To Xbox One
While most devices in the world come with Bluetooth, the Xbox doesnt. Microsoft decided to use an in-house wireless protocol called the Xbox Wireless and this allows you to connect your headphones to the box without any cables.
However, to use your wireless headphone with Xbox One it needs to be compatible with it.
If you have such headphones, follow these steps to connect them to the Xbox controller.
Now, what if the headphones you are using are not compatible with the Xbox one? Dont be disheartened as there are some tricks you can use to connect them too!
a. PC Connection
To work this method, you will have to first connect your Xbox One to a Windows PC. Now the PC becomes the end-user device and you can connect your headphones to the PC to get the audio working.
What Causes An Xbox One Controller Headphone Jack To Stop Working
When an Xbox One controller headphone jack stops working, it’s either due to a hardware or firmware problem. Xbox One controller headphone jacks aren’t soldered in place, so regular use can cause the contacts to become loose. When that happens, your Xbox One may not recognize your headset, or you may experience poor sound quality.
Audio problems are sometimes caused by the headphone jack when something else is to blame. For example, damaged headphone connectors, a muted gaming headset, or incorrectly configured privacy settings can all present as problems with the headset jack.
Get Your Headset Replaced Or Repaired
In case none of the above-mentioned methods work, it is highly likely that your Xbox headset is not working due to a hardware fault. In this case, you will either have to get it replaced or repaired.
This may depend on your budget though. Mostly, getting a headset repaired is cheaper than buying a new pair. However, a repaired device does not always perform at its maximum level of output. As a result of this, your gaming experience may get affected.
The best option would be to invest in a new Xbox one headset that can support your gaming experience for a good while.
In case you wish to go for a cheaper option, consider buying a used or refurbished one from eBay. You may end up with a great deal if you are lucky.

How To Connect Your Headphones To The Xbox One
This part is super simple as long as you’re using the more recent versions of the Xbox One controller. These have the 3.5mm headset jack in the bottom, and so to use them, all you have to do is plug the headphones into the controller.
If you’re using a first-generation Xbox One controller, there is, unfortunately, no headphone jack. As such, you’ll need to invest in a Stereo Headset Adapter. It connects to the bottom of your controller with your headphones hooking up to the bottom of the adapter.
You also get added handy features like volume adjust, chat/game audio mix adjust, and a big old mute button. Even on the later versions of the Xbox One controller , you can gain a fair bit from using one of these.
The official Microsoft one is no longer sold new, although well-known headset maker Turtle Beach has an excellent alternative.

How To Fix An Xbox Series X Or S Headphone Jack
To fix your malfunctioning Xbox Series X or S headphone jack, follow these instructions:
Disconnect and reconnect the headset. You may just have a bad connection, which can make it seem like the jack is bad. Try gripping the headphone plug firmly, unplugging it, and then reinserting it. Make sure that the jack is fully seated, and check to see if the headset works.
Examine the headset, cord, and connector. If you are able to see any visible damage to any of these components, then youre probably dealing with a faulty headset and not a bad headset jack. Frayed or broken wires can be fixed if you own a soldering iron and heat shrink, or you can just buy a new headset. If you see any debris on the connector, like dirt, food, or rust, try cleaning it off with a cotton swab that has been dipped in alcohol. Allow it to dry, then check to see if the headset works.
Most Xbox One headsets work with Xbox Series X and S, so try one of those if you have one.
Update the firmware. If you found that your headset worked with a different controller, try updating the firmware of the original controller.

Repair Xbox One Controller Headphone Jack
The headphone jack sockets on the xbox one controllers get a fair bit of hammer as the kids are jumping around playing their games. Its quite a common issue where crackling and disconnection occurs on the microphone or audio connections. I cant blame the design, its amazing they last as long as they do but to replace a controller every 10 months is too much to ask.
The part that needs replacing is the headphone jack socket itself. This is a small component that is readily available and requires no soldering to fit. Instead its trapped between two printed circuit boards within the controller handset, making contact via the springs on the body of the component
Looking on the internet there are many guides on how to perform this fix. The one I preferred is this you-tube video that has a lovely sequence to performing this fix.
Its a very straightforward fix with no soldering involved with all the parts and tools readily available. There are even kits to perform the fix.
I didnt buy kit, instead I treated myself to a new precision screwdriver kit with plenty of different security bits, very useful considering the amount of repairs similar to this I have to do.
I have now needed to performed this repair three times and while its saved us some money its clear this isnt going to stop happening. Combine this with a number of headphone leads that have also been damaged, we eventually invested in wireless headphones.
What Causes An Xbox Series X Or S Controller Headphone Jack To Stop Working
When the headphone jack in an Xbox controller stops working, it can be due to either a hardware or firmware problem. The headphone jack itself can fail in a few different ways, and corrupt or outdated firmware for both the console and the controller can also cause this issue.
Additionally, a lot of audio problems are blamed on the headphone jack when they are actually caused by something else. Problems like a damaged headphone connector plug, muted headset, and incorrectly configured voice, privacy, or parental settings on your Xbox can all prevent your headset from working just like a bad headset jack.

How To Remove Broken Headphone Piece Out Of Controller
So I was using a pair of gaming headphones and my arm got caught in the wire and pulled away and broke the end of the cable in the controller. So I spent $30 on the gripstick to remove it, but all it did was push it in further. Please help. Are there possible refunds for the GripStick? Also, it wasnt just the tip that broke off. It was a decent chunk of the headphone jack that is now lodged in even more thanks to the GripStick.
My son handed me a Xbox1 controller that he broke the headset plug.. Its been since PS3 that I’ve played any games so I assume all Xbox controllers are more or less the same.
With a pin move the broken pin around in the jack and you’ll see a itty bitty brass or whatever metal but its there. Magnification makes the entire process easier. The itty bitty piece is whats holding the pin in place. Once you found it you can push it back with something pointy. Its that little metal piece sits in the first oring notch thats holding the broken AUX in place. After you push the itty bitty metal piece back you can begin to fish the broken piece out cause its released and free. It tool me a couple times of having it squirt back into the jack but no damage to the controller, the pin removed and saved a pile of bucks. Thought I’d share this tidbit of success.

Xbox One Controller Headphone Jack Issue
I’m sorry to hear about this issue your brother is experiencing with the audio jack not working properly.
If it’s a brand new controller then possibly the headset being used may not be compatible with the Xbox controllers. Audio jacks have two different standards:
- Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association , and
- Open Mobile Terminal Platform .
The Xbox uses CTIA standard where the microphone section is closer to the end of the cable. If it is not the right standard, most electronic stores sell an inexpensive converter. Does the headset work with other controllers?
There’s no way to directly fix this without trying the headset on another controller as it seems it is just a detection issue.
Let us know what headset you are using and if you can try it on another controller.
