How To Hard Reset Xbox One

In hindsight, it was rather great of Microsoft to keep the same operating system and dashboard in place between the Xbox One and Xbox Series line of consoles. Because of that choice, you can follow the same instructions on all of these platforms and reach the same end result: a factory reset of your machine.

The process is pretty straightforward. All you do is open Settings, go to the System section, choose the Console info option, and then select Reset console.

At this point, youll be given three choices:

    • Reset and remove everything
    • Reset and keep my games & apps
    • Cancel

If you are selling or giving away your Xbox, youll want to choose Reset and remove everything. That basically clears the deck on the console and lets the next owner start with a clean slate. They can register it under their name, download their own games to it, and there will be no signs that the console ever belonged to you.

And thats all there is to it! After reading the above info, you should know how to factory reset Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft made the entire deal fairly simple, and the fact that it works regardless of whether youre on a last-gen Xbox or a current-gen Xbox is just icing on the cake.

Before you totally reset an Xbox One,;try less severe fixes first. If the system isn’t responding, press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. This will perform a hard reset, which fixes a lot of problems without actually obliterating all of the data on your system.

If your Xbox One is malfunctioning so severely that you can’t access the settings menu, or it isn’t outputting video to your TV, scroll all the way to the bottom of this article for instructions on how to perform a factory reset using a USB flash drive.

The other reason to factory-reset an Xbox One is to remove all of your personal information, your Gamertag, and downloaded apps and games before trading in or selling an old console. This prevents anyone else from gaining access to your stuff.

You cannot wipe Xbox One remotely in the event that you’ve sold it or it has been stolen; however, you can prevent anyone from accessing your stuff by changing the password of the Microsoft account that is tied to your Gamertag.

Disclaimers Before Factory Resetting Your Xbox One

Reset Xbox One to Factory Defaults

Factory resetting your Xbox One is currently the only known way to make the console usable again. However, it might come at a cost: Outside of any data uploaded to the cloud, your saved games, accounts and settings could be reset and deleted. When I reset my Xbox One, I was given the option to keep my games and apps downloaded, but I cant guarantee youll have the same luck.

This isnt a simple task to perform, either. Under normal circumstances, a factory reset is an easy-to-access option that exists within the Xbox Ones settings menu. Unfortunately, this nasty bug renders the consoles interface wholly inaccessible, meaning you’ll have to jump through a number of hoops to initiate a factory reset.

Youll also need additional items to even begin this process. Since the console is unusable, you have to download the required files onto a USB flash drive, or some other external drive. We recommend using one with at least 4GB of free space. Youll also need a computer with an internet connection, or at the very least, something that will allow you to download this file and move it over to the external drive.

If you have the required items, and dont mind risking the loss of saved data, heres how you can factory reset your Xbox One even when trapped at the black screen of death.

If youve performed a factory reset and still have the console youll want to reload all of your purchases, games, and profile. Getting your data back is easy. Simply sign in using the same profile you used prior to the reset.

All of your games can be downloaded again while your game progress shouldve saved to the cloud. Just keep in mind, if your Xbox wasnt connected to the internet before you reset it, you may risk losing your game progress because there was no backup performed.

Prepare Your Xbox For A Factory Reset

If soft and hard resets dont cut it for you, you can finally move on to performing a factory reset. But before that, its important to make sure you have all your data backed up, either on the cloud or on an external storage drive.

A factory reset removes not only all your games and progress data but also your personal settings and accounts. Your Xbox backs up all your data on the cloud but only if its connected to Xbox Live. In case youve not been online for a while, its best to sync your console with Xbox Live before moving to a factory reset.

You can also choose to back up your games on an external drive by following the steps below:

  • Head over to the System tab in the Settings app
  • Select Storage > internal drive
  • Select Transfer and choose the items you want to transfer
  • Choose Copy selected or Move selected
  • Select the target drive and choose Copy or Move
  • Now that youve backed up all of your important data, you can move to the next section to begin the factory reset process.

Factory Reset Xbox One X Without Screen

My Xbox One X HDMI port has died, I have put in a Service Request to have it fixed or replaced, the problem I am having is factory resetting the console without a screen before I send it off. I have tried following the “How to reset your console to factory defaults on Xbox One” guide from the link in the email I received after raising the service request, however the instructions don’t make sense. It basically says you can reset the console without a screen with a USB flash drive by downloading a file from your computer then plugging it into your Xbox… blah blah blah… then the last step says “Once the console restarts, you should see the digital setup experience to guide you through resetting your console.”. Exactly how am I going to see this digital setup experience when I don’t have a screen??? Has anyone had to do this before? Is it even possible?

Xbox One Factory Reset With Usb Fails

I have a Xbox One that was updating when said it ran out of memory.

    The screen had the following:

“Clear some space on internal storage. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS needs 4.9GB additional space for its update Uninstall something from internal storage, then try again. “

Two clickable buttons were shown: “Free Up Space” and “Cancel”.

Regardless of selecting one or the other the screen went dark and that’s the last of any activity.

I tried hard reset but that came back to the same screen.

Then I tried to do a factory reset with a USB stick since all the console windows were not available.

This also failed even though I carefully followed all the instructions on unplugging the ethernet cable, unplugging the power, formatting the USB as NTFS, downloading the zip file and copying the $SystemUpdate folder to the USB, plugging the USB drive in a USB port, simultaneously holding down the Pair and Eject buttons then touching the power button. Sometimes I hear the two power up chimes after 15 seconds and I see the USB stick is being accessed but then the power down chime happens after a few seconds meaning it failed. Sometimes after 15 seconds I see the USB being access but I don’t hear any chimes.

I’ve tried two different USB sticks, both of which are 32GB big and both work fine on my windows box.

Are there any other bootable programs I might be able to put on my USB stick?

Is there a secret way to really reset the XBOX operating system to boot into safe mode like a PC?
