What Playing Cloud Games On A Chromebook Is Like
We used the four-year-old HP Chromebook 13 as our test bed, powered by what was, even then, an anemic Core m3. When you load the Game Pass app, youre presented with a choice of games, with a slim navigation bar that allows you to pick from the cloud, console, or PC as your platform.
When you select a cloud game, theres a pause while the server remotely loads and sets up your game. When it launches, youll see everything that youd see on the game as it loads on a PC or Xbox, but in a much more vision-friendly format on your Chromebook. You can even play on an external display.
Visual quality takes a hit in graphics-intensive games like Forza Horizon 4, though youre moving quickly enough that the background tends to blur, anyway.
I tried a few games: Forza Horizon 4 Dead Cells, and Sea of Thieves, among others. Immediately, I noticed that playing was simply far more comfortable, ergonomically, then squinting at a tiny phone screenas I did in my hands-on last October.
A calm, slow-paced game like the Windows 10 Edition of Cities Skylines is ideal for cloud gaming.

Games like Forza also showed some drop in visual qualityagain, probably more noticeable when projected upon the larger screen of the Chromebook, and at high speeds. Sea of Thieves, however, looked just as good as I recall. Frame rates, though, were a bit choppy, and hovered around 30 fps or slightly lower.

Once you start combining the power of a web or Android app with a Chromebook, your gaming horizons can expand further. Its at this point, however, that gaming moves off of the Chromebook and into the cloud.
Remote or cloud gaming uses a PC or a console situated remotely, and streams the resulting content down to your Chromebook. You sign up for a service like Google Stadia, and typically download a small web app or Android utility. You can typically connect an Xbox or other third-party controller to the Chromebook, or simply use a keyboard and mouse.
