You Cant Upgrade An Xbox One Controllers Firmware On Windows 7 Or 8
Unfortunately, the Xbox Accessories app is only available for Windows 10. Microsoft provides no way to update an Xbox One controllers firmware on Windows 7 or 8.
To update an Xbox One controllers firmware, youll need to connect your Xbox One controller to either a Windows 10 PC or Xbox One console. If you have a Windows 10 PC or Xbox One, or just know someone who does, thats your best bet for updating the firmware.
On a Windows 10 PC, you can simply connect the Xbox One controller to the computer normally and update it with the Xbox Accessories app as described above.
On an Xbox One, you can connect the Xbox One controller to the Xbox One using the included USB cable. The update may begin automatically. If it doesnt, head to All Settings > Kinect & Devices > Devices & Accessories and select the controller. If an update is available, select the Update button. If no update is available, youll see a No Update Available message on the controllers information screen.
Hopefully, Microsoft will one day make this process easier. For example, the ability to upgrade firmware could be integrated into the Xbox app bundled with Windows 10, and that app could notify you when a firmware upgrade is available.
Microsoft could also release a standalone firmware-updating tool for older versions of Windows, but that doesnt seem very likely with Microsofts focus on Windows 10.
How To Connect Xbox One Controller To Xbox Series X / S
Thanks to Xboxs backwards compatibility, connecting an Xbox One controller to the Xbox Series X or S is the same process as connecting one of the new Xbox Series X/S controllers.

The Xbox Series Ss sync button is on the front left, to the right of the USB port. On the controller, the sync button is just above the USB port. You have around 20 seconds to press both sync buttons – if you were unable to do so, press both buttons again.Once a connection has been made the Xbox button on both the controller and console will remain stable and no longer flash.
If you prefer to connect via the USB cable you can do. Simply connect the controller to the Xbox via the USB cable and allow the two devices to synchronize.

Can You Use Other Xbox One Peripherals With Xbox Series X Or S
Microsoft doesnt guarantee 100 percent backwards compatibility between Xbox One peripherals and Xbox Series X or S, but the coverage is pretty good. All official controllers and most official peripherals and accessories work, including headsets. A lot of third party controllers work as well, including wired and wireless controllers, headsets, and more.
Some peripherals dont work, so dont go out and buy a brand new Xbox One peripheral assuming that it will work with the Xbox Series X or S. Check with the manufacturer first, and see if they have tested the product for compatibility, or if theyre planning on testing in the future.
If you already have a controller or peripheral that works with your Xbox One, theres no harm in checking to see if it works with your Xbox Series X or S. Just follow the same procedure you used to connect it to your Xbox One, and check with the manufacturer if it doesnt work. It may not be compatible, or there may be a special connection procedure for using it with the new consoles.

Using Your Xbox One Controller
Using a wired Xbox One controller on PC is as simple as it gets, if you don’t mind a tether. Plug your micro-USB cable into the controller and into a USB port on your PC. Windows should install the necessary driver, the Xbox Guide button in the center will light up, and you’re in business!
Windows version note: On Windows 10, you can connect up to eight Xbox One controllers, while on Windows 7 and Windows 8, you can connect up to four. On Windows 10, you can only have four controllers connected if you also connect an Xbox chat headset to the controller or two with the stereo headset. Audio throughput isn’t supported on Windows 7 and 8.
Troubleshooting note: the vast majority of micro-USB cables carry data no problem, but some manufacturers cheap out and produce cables that can only charge. If you’re using a random USB cable from a drawer and having trouble, try a different one.

Can’t Connect Your Xbox One Controller
The above steps should sync your Xbox controller and console in most cases. But if pairing doesn’t work, try these troubleshooting tips:
- Try replacing the batteries in the controller. If you use the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit or Xbox Rechargeable Battery attachment, make sure your controller is charged. Confirm that the cable you’re using to connect and charge the controller works properly.
- Keep the controller close to the console when you sync it. The wireless connection between your console and controller has a range of about 20-30 feet, so it may disconnect if you go further.
- Turn off any other wireless devices that are close to the Xbox and controller to reduce interference.
- Fully restart your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the system for about 10 seconds. Disconnect the console’s power cable for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it and turn on your system again.
- Remember that you can only have eight controllers connected to the system at once. If you somehow have this many connected, disconnect a few before connecting another.
- The Xbox Series X|S controller has a handy feature that lets you switch between using your controller with your Xbox and a connected Bluetooth device. Quickly press the Pair button on your controller twice to switch from a Bluetooth connection back to your Xbox. Hold Pair to put your controller back in pairing mode so you can reconnect it to the Bluetooth device.

Xbox One Controllers Vs Series X
Xbox One controllers and Xbox Series X|S controllers look remarkably similar, but they actually have some pretty different guts inside. It just works.
How To Connect Xbox One Controller To Xbox Series X
It’s surprisingly easy to connect an older Xbox One controller to the newer Xbox Series X and S systems.
If you just got a new Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, you might be in a rush to go out and buy more controllers for it. After all, game systems have almost all only come with one controller dating back to the Sega Genesis. However, even though the Series X|S follows suit, the Xbox One controller is fully compatible with both systems. You can use it not only for playing Xbox One games on the newer consoles, but also all Xbox Series X|S games, which is different from how the PS5 supports DualShock 4 controllers.
