1. Open the Windows Store and search for Xbox Accessories. Install the app and open it.

Windows version note: The app only works with Windows 10 with the Anniversary update applied.

2. Plug your Xbox One controller in with a micro-USB cable.

3. Click the “More options” button to check if there’s a firmware update for your controller.

Instead of configuring controller options on a game-by-game basis, you can also use the Accessories app to change button mapping, swap and invert sticks and triggers, and enable or disable rumble.

If you have an Xbox One Elite controller, you can also use the Accessories app to configure options like trigger and analog stick sensitivity. You can save different configurations to the two profiles the controller supports.

You activate the controller by holding down the Guide button, then hold the Pairing button for three seconds until the Guide button flashes. This means it’s in pairing mode. If you’re connecting the controller to a console, you hold the Pairing button on the system itself. If you’re connecting the controller to a Windows 10 PC, you need to go through some menus.     Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own

    To start, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, and now widely available as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is nearly identical to the Xbox One’s controller. They both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods for connecting them to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.

    Original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that shipped with the Xbox One S and later consoles include Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different you must get a wireless dongle for the non-Bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked yours up in the last four years, there’s a good chance that it already has Bluetooth.

    To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the controller’s face, it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.

    To pair a new controller with your Xbox Series X or S, or an older Xbox One console , put two AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack in the controller. Microsoft provides a set of disposable batteries in the box, but you can grab a play and charge kit for around $20.

    Press the power button on the front to turn on your Xbox console. Locate and press the pairing button on your console on Xbox Series X and S, its the small round button next to the front USB ports, as shown below.
