It’s not just games that have updates these days. So do controllers! While it’s not necessary to update your Xbox controller, if you want to, the process is pretty simple.
1. Open the Windows Store and search for Xbox Accessories. Install the app and open it.
Windows version note: The app only works with Windows 10 with the Anniversary update applied.
2. Plug your Xbox One controller in with a micro-USB cable.
3. Click the “More options” button to check if there’s a firmware update for your controller.
Instead of configuring controller options on a game-by-game basis, you can also use the Accessories app to change button mapping, swap and invert sticks and triggers, and enable or disable rumble.
If you have an Xbox One Elite controller, you can also use the Accessories app to configure options like trigger and analog stick sensitivity. You can save different configurations to the two profiles the controller supports.
How To Pair An Xbox Series X Controller To An Ios Device
To pair an Xbox Series X controller to an iOS device, make sure your controller has received the latest updates and your iOS device is on the latest operating system version. First, on your iOS device go to Settings > Bluetooth and ensure that it’s turned on. Next, press the Xbox button to turn on your controller, unless it’s already paired with an Xbox in which case you should leave it off. Hold the Pair button for 3 seconds and release, then check the Bluetooth device list on your iOS device and choose Xbox Wireless Controller. Wait until the devices show as paired, then you’re done.

How To Pair An Xbox One Controller With Windows 10 Using Cables
Pairing your Xbox One controller with Windows 10 using cables is probably the easiest way. This will both connect your controller to your computer, as well as charge it up when need be. If your Xbox One controller is running out of juice, you can easily charge it up by pairing it with your computer. Follow these steps to pair your Xbox One controller using cables:
- Find a compatible micro-USB cable
- Connect the micro-USB cable to the micro-USB port at the top of your controller
- Connect the other end of the micro-USB cable to one of your computers USB ports
- If you are running Windows 10, the controller should automatically get recognized

Connect Your Xbox Controller To Pc With Bluetooth
Pairing the Xbox controller with your PC over Bluetooth is almost the same as pairing it with your Xbox One or Xbox Series. You activate the controller by holding down the Guide button, then hold the Pairing button for three seconds until the Guide button flashes. This means it’s in pairing mode. If you’re connecting the controller to a console, you hold the Pairing button on the system itself. If you’re connecting the controller to a Windows 10 PC, you need to go through some menus. You also need a Bluetooth USB dongle if your PC doesn’t have Bluetooth. Here’s the full step-by-step process:
Hold the Guide button to turn on the controller.
Hold the Pairing button for three seconds until the Guide button flashes.
Right-click the Bluetooth icon in your system tray.
You can now use the Xbox Wireless Gamepad with your PC, and play the vast majority of modern games that support controllers. However, you can’t use the headset jack on the gamepad, just like Sony’s DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers. As the One S controller has largely replaced the original One controller, its normal to worry that if you see a particularly good offer on an Xbox controller, you might accidentally be looking at an original rather than an updated S gamepad.
Thankfully, theres one quick, clear way to help identify the difference between the two generations of controller.
At the top of the centre of the controller sits the Xbox logo button which calls up your home screen when in game. On the original One controller, the plastic surrounding this button is noticeably glossy, unlike the matte finish used elsewhere on the controllers body, whereas on the S update, its more consistent with the rest of the controller. On white original controllers, this plastic will also be black, where on the S controller its white.

How To Connect Your Xbox One Controller To Xbox Series X/s
Turn on your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series X by pressing the power button and turn on your Xbox One controller by holding down the ‘Xbox’ button. The Xbox button will flash, which means it’s not connected to the console yet.
On your Xbox Series X, press the Pair button which is located on the front right of the console above the USB port. The Xbox Series S Pair button is located on the front left, right of the USB port. You should see the illuminated Xbox logo begin to flash.
Within 20 seconds, press and hold the Pair button on your Xbox One controller until the Xbox button starts flashing rapidly. The Pair button can be found on the top of the controller between the bumper buttons and next to the controller’s charging port.
The Xbox button will remain lit once it’s successfully connected to the console.

Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own
To start, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, and now widely available as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is nearly identical to the Xbox One’s controller. They both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods for connecting them to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.
Original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that shipped with the Xbox One S and later consoles include Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different you must get a wireless dongle for the non-Bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked yours up in the last four years, there’s a good chance that it already has Bluetooth.
To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the controller’s face, it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.
How To Pair Your Controller With An Xbox
To pair a new controller with your Xbox Series X or S, or an older Xbox One console , put two AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack in the controller. Microsoft provides a set of disposable batteries in the box, but you can grab a play and charge kit for around $20.
Press the power button on the front to turn on your Xbox console. Locate and press the pairing button on your console on Xbox Series X and S, its the small round button next to the front USB ports, as shown below.
On an Xbox One X or S, the pairing button is on the front of the console, near the USB port on the right, as shown below.
On an original Xbox One, youll find the pairing button on the left of the console near the optical disc drive.
Now, press and hold the pairing button along the top edge of your controller, just above the battery compartment. You dont have to turn on the controller first. Press and hold the pair button until the Xbox logo on the controller starts to flash rapidly.
When the Xbox logo stops flashing and remains solid, your controller has been paired. If you encounter any issues, make sure your console was in pairing mode.
You should now be able to control the Xbox interface with your new controller.
