Astro has released a firmware update for the Astro A50 to bring compatibility for the Xbox Series X without SPDIF optical. Here are some steps on how to get it working. You will need a compatible Windows 10 PC to get it updated.
Do note that you can also just plug the optical cable directly into your TV, and get the audio from your Xbox that way as well. Be sure to take a look at our best Xbox Series X, Series S headsets article if you’re looking to pick up an alternative too!

The Astro A40 TR with MixAmp is a leading headset combo.
Thankfully, it seems that Astro at least is making alternative arrangements for its headsets and SPDIF MixAmp to work on Xbox Series X. I’ve been told that there are plans to make the MixAmp and Astro A50 work on the Xbox Series X, but Astro and Microsoft are still ironing out the details. It’ll be worth keeping an eye on Astro’s social channels in the meanwhile.
You Shouldn’t Buy This If
- You don’t need the dual sound source mixing.
- You don’t think the charge dock is value for money.
If you don’t need the dual-sound mixing feature or the charge dock, you will potentially find a lot better value with a more affordable headset. But honestly, there’s a reason I keep coming back to the Astro A50 as my primary day-to-day headset, despite having tested dozens upon dozens of competitors. The convenience really is worth it in my particular setup.

Astro A: The Competition

The Astro A50 doesn’t really have any competition for its features. There are no options out there right now that let you mix SPDIF optical audio from your TV in combination with a USB PC source, making the A50 the most ideal solution for those who use their PCs in tandem with their Xbox or PlayStation consoles.
There are headsets out there that potentially have better value, if you don’t need to mix sound from a SPDIF optical source. I would recommend the Corsair HS75 XB as a go-to option for those who just want a pure wireless no-nonsense Xbox headset. The cheaper RIG 700 PRO HX is also a great, more affordable option. If you find Bluetooth to be reliable, you could also consider something like the LucidSound LS50X. But if you want something with a charging base, this is your only option.

How Much Is The Logitech Astro A50 Xbox Gaming Headset
The Logitech Astro A50 gaming headset with the base station for Xbox costs £299 on the Logitech website, which is definitely on the high end of what you can pay for one. So high that many would likely shy away from it because of it and you wouldnt be blamed if you did.
Logitech Astro A50 Xbox Gaming Headset Review: Summary
There is a bit of fiddling to be done to get this working with the Xbox Series X, but once you have done that, you will be greeted with some of the best sounds to come out of a gaming headset that we have heard. Unfortunately, the price of the Logitech Astro A50 Xbox gaming headset is too high to recommend when everything else does not dazzle in quite the same way.

Astro A50 Base Station Features
The A50 base station is simply amazing for this generation! Its much smaller than previous generations and adds new features. The base station will wirelessly charge the headset and includes a small OLED screen that displays information such as battery level, Dolby surround status, the selected EQ preset, and whether the headset is set to console or PC mode.
The base station also includes a multitude of ports which include: a USB Type-A Play and Charge Port , an Optical In port, an Optical Out Port, an AUX In/Mic Out port, and a USB power/audio port which uses a micro USB to USB Type-A wire. Additionally, it has a PC/PS4 switch or PC/XBOX switch depending on your model.
Astro A50 Vs Razer Nari Ultimate
Once again, the A50s wipe the floor with the Razer Nari Ultimate. They offer superior sound quality, microphone performance, comfort, and battery life. However, the Razer Nari Ultimate does offer bass haptic feedback which is a neat feature. However, we cannot justify ever choosing the Razer Nari Ultimate over the A50s simply because of haptic feedback.

Logitech Astro A50 Xbox Gaming Headset Performance
Right out of the box, the sound is amazing with the Logitech Astro A50, and it can be further improved if you play about with the Astro Command Centre.
The noise you get from games is nigh on perfect, with the smallest of noises coming through in crystal clear quality it really makes whatever you are playing feel like a truly immersive experience. Same too with music. The base levels are strong here, and songs certainly get extra oomph when listening to them through these.
It is let down in other areas, though. Microphones are rarely exceptional with headsets, but we had hoped the price would mean that a decent one was provided here not so. It is not a bad mic by any stretch of the imagination, but it is lacking, and you would be right to expect better from this.

- Daniel Rutledge
If you’ve gotten a new-generation gaming console, you probably want to get a new headset to go with it.
After checking out the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 for my PlayStation 5, I wanted to get a decent headset for my Xbox Series X and opted for the Astro A50 Gen 3.
Having used it with Microsoft’s latest console across a range of games, I can comfortably say that this is a brilliant headset – but is it worth the hefty price tag?
I’ve been using the A50 Gen 3 for the past few weeks and here are my thoughts.

For the last 15 years the name Astro has been synonymous with premium gaming headsets and for good reason. Astro headsets not only offer incredible sound but are also extremely comfortable for long gaming sessions. Today we will be reviewing Astros flagship model, the A50 Gen 4 wireless headset. Since its debut in 2012, the A50 headset has not changed much when it comes to styling, but it has evolved when it comes to sound quality and features.
With its latest Gen 4 update in 2019, the A50s received a new base station, retuned drivers, improved battery life and a 2.4 GHz wireless connection. But at $299, is it worth the price?

How To Connect A Headset Or Speakers To The Xbox Series X Using Optical Cables
You might have noticed that there is no optical audio output on your Xbox Series X or Series S.
Microsoft decided to remove this in the new console due to it’s “low usage”.
Fortunately, there is a way around this. If you buy an HDMI Audio Extractor, you can strip the audio from the HDMI cable and connect an Optical cable.
The Optical cable can then be run into your Mix Amp or Speakers. Most of these devices also come with a second ‘Audio Out’ port that allows you to split the audio to multiple devices e.g. a headset and speakers.
You can explore some HDMI Audio Extractor options here:
Mix Amps are extremely versatile and offer multiple choices to receive your audio.
You can use the Optical port or the AUX/3.5mm Audio Jack to generate your audio. These are particularly useful if you’re using the same headset and mixamp for a PC and console.
Simply run an AUX cable from your monitor/TV into the appropriate 3.5mm Audio Jack on your MixAmp or use an HDMI audio extractor so you can use Optical cables .
The MixAmp also offers a third audio passthrough, which is exclusive to your PC, by simply plugging it in via USB.
If you own an Astro MixAmp Pro TR or A50 Base Station, you can update it to the latest firmware and it will work by plugging it into the USB ports on the console.
Astro A50 Wireless Xbox And Pc Headset Review: All Roads Lead Back To Astro

Back in 2019, the Astro A50 got a bit of a soft revamp. An improved docking station, superior headset design, and boosted audio were all on the docket. I reviewed the headset back in 2019, and have reviewed dozens upon dozens of competing products since, many of which appear in our best Xbox One headset and best Xbox Series X, Series S headsets roundups.
Despite all the competing options I have available to me, time and time again, I find the convenience of the Astro A50 unbeatable, despite the $300 price tag. If you’re someone who does a lot of gaming across multiple platforms at your desk in a single space, this headset is kind of unbeatable.

Our Verdict: Should You Buy The Logitech Astro A50 Xbox Gaming Headset
If we were just talking about the sound produced, then this would get the highest recommendation we have given for a gaming headset, but the Logitech Astro A50 has issues, and the biggest is the price which is way too high for what you get. The mic needs work, the design is not the best out there, and you can definitely get better, or at least almost as good with the sound, for cheaper.

Set Up The Controller
Make sure that both your Xbox One console and controller are updated. To update the console and controller, connect your controller to the Xbox One via a USB cable. Do this with every Xbox One controller you plan to use.
If you have the Xbox One version of the A50, you have everything you need. The key here is the Xbox One chat cable. This cable is missing from some A50s and this is what makes the Xbox One difficult to use, in general, with other universal headsets such as the PDP Afterglow Prismatic.

Is There An Astro Base Station For Xbox
Experience Absolute Immersion with the A50 Wireless + Base Station. All current ASTRO Gaming products designed for Xbox will offer continuous compatibility on Xbox: Series X|S. The free ASTRO Command Center software gives players complete control over their audio experience, which includes voice communication and game audio settings.
Astro A50 Mic Not Working On Xbox One
The first solution to try is the simplest one here, which is to just unplug the cord of the Astro A50 from the base. But there is a specific way this needs to be done for the mic to start working again. Firstly, players need to assign a party with the players that they intend to talk to and/or run the game that they plan to play.
Now unplug the device from the base and wait only a few seconds before plugging it back in again. Your Xbox One should now be recognizing the Astro A50 without any issues and the mic should work too because of this.
Another thing to watch out for are the two different modes that are available on the base station. The Astro A50 headset was made for PC and Xbox gamers alike, and there are two different settings that can be chosen depending on which of the two platforms that users have.
Since youre using the headphones on an Xbox One, make sure that the base station is toggled to Xbox. Simply keep the headset plugged in while using them with the headset and just switch it to Xbox. Even if its already got the correct setting assigned, switch it to PC and then back to Xbox, as that can help the console recognize the headset at times too.
One more thing that can be done is trying to sync the Astro A50 headset with the base station that you have for it so that the device and its built-in microphone start working properly. Doing so is pretty easy.
