Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own
To start, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, and now widely available as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is nearly identical to the Xbox One’s controller. They both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods for connecting them to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.
Original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that shipped with the ;Xbox One S;and later consoles include Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different; you must get a wireless dongle for the non-Bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked yours up in the last four years, there’s a good chance that it already has Bluetooth.
To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the controller’s face, it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.
Play Games With A Wired Connection
If youve somehow managed to drain or destroy all of your AA batteries, you still dont have to stop playing your Xbox One or Series X. An Xbox One wireless controller can be converted into a wired controller by connecting it to your console with any Micro USB cable. Unlike the Xbox 360, which would only charge wireless controllers over a connection, connecting the controller in this manner on the Xbox One actually allows data to transmit over the wired connection. While wired, the controller does not need batteries to run and will not drain any batteries in the controller. If you have the Play and Charge Kit, the battery will charge.
This method isnt just an excellent way to save your batteries; its also just a better way to play games. For the gamers who are wired in, your console will rely on rapid reflexes, which is similar to fighting games like Dark Souls III. You may realize theres a slight drop in your games input lag. That could ultimately prove pretty helpful, especially if youre battling in Injustice 2 or Dragon Ball FighterZ, where every single moment matters. Finally, its beneficial to wire your controller to your console because then youll never have to worry about your battery dropping out in the middle of a fight again.

1. Download;XInputBatteryMeter. Next, install the application. Once installed, the app runs from the System Tray and supports up to four connected controllers.
2. Now open the system tray and click on the application icon. You will find the battery percentage for Xbox One controller connected to your system. If you have multiple controllers connected, then the battery percentage for each controller will be displayed separately.

You Can Always Play Wired Instead
Depending on your setup, playing wired may be a better option. You dont need to put any batteries inside the controller to do this, either. Its worth noting that the controller feels a bit light with an empty battery compartment, so even expired batteries might be better than nothing.
The Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles use a different connector for their respective controllers, but theres a good chance you have both lying around already. These are:
- Xbox Series X|S;controller: USB-C connector

How Do I Get The Xbox Accessories App To Show Battery Level On An Xbox Wireless Controller
I have am Xbox one X wireless controller connected to my PC via Bluetooth. I have had the battery die at the most inconvenient times when playing games. I have been trying the Xbox accessories app in the app store but it will not work correctly for me. When I start the app it says to connect the controller via a USB cable to configure it. I do that and everything seems fine, also note that while connected via USB the app will not give me a battery level. After configuring it I have to re-add it in the devices section to connect via Bluetooth. But as soon as I connect it via Bluetooth the app will not give me any info on the controller other than it is connected, and it asks to be reconnected to configure the controller. So how do I get this to work so I can see the battery level of my controller while connected wirelessly?

The Open Source Solution From Github
It is initially implemented by Robert Beekman and further polished by NiyaShy
This solution is hosted on GitHub as an open source project. If you want you can read everything it can do and also you can contribute to it if you feel so.
It is a really discrete app, that shows a little icon in your start menu as a status indicator for your Xbox One Controller battery. Can you spot it?
When you hover over, it displays a more detailed status.
It also claims that it works with multiple Xbox One Controllers as well that I couldnt test and confirm yet. Let me know in the comments if it really does.
Keep Some Disposables Handy
Its easy to throw some alkaline AA batteries in a drawer just in case. It may seem a bit old fashioned that Microsoft still provides disposable AA batteries with each controller sold, but it provides lots of options in terms of how you power your controllers.
The alternative is Sonys approach, where each controller contains a lithium-ion battery thats not accessible without taking the gamepad apart. In the case of the DualShock 4, battery life was poor from the get-go and only declined over time as the cells began to lose capacity.
If youre buying some spare AA batteries, make sure you avoid smoke detector batteries, as those are designed for low-drain devices.

Xbox players must be well aware of the fact that Windows 10 doesnt allow you to check the battery percentage quite easily. As mentioned earlier, Windows doesnt provide an easy way to track the battery percentage. Hence, there is a third party application called;XInputBatteryMeter. The application works for Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10. Even though the app shows the battery percentage of Xbox One controllers, it is compatible with other controllers as well. In fact, it is compatible with all those controllers that use the input controller service. To make the app work for other types of controllers, users must have the latest version of DirectX installed.

How To Connect Xbox Controller To Pc Via Usb Cable
The most straightforward way to connect your Xbox controller and PC is with a micro-USB cable . Simply plug the slim end into your Xbox One controller and the other end into a USB port on your PC. Hit the Xbox button to turn the controller on if it doesn’t do so on its own.
On Windows 10, your computer should recognize the controller instantly. On earlier versions of Windows, the OS should automatically download drivers and your controller will be ready in a few moments.
Note that even when plugged into a computer, the batteries in your Xbox controller will drain. We recommend picking up the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit; to give your controller recharging capabilities. With it, your controller will charge when connected to your PC, eliminating battery life concerns.
When you want to disconnect your Xbox controller from the PC, just unplug it. It may flash for a few seconds as it’s looking for other devices, but it will turn off before long.
Use The Xbox Wireless Adapter To Pair Xbox One Controller To Pc

Microsoft has a standard called Xbox Wireless that’s built into a few computers, but there’s a good chance it’s not part of yours. So to sync your Xbox One controller and PC wirelessly without Bluetooth, you’ll need to buy the Xbox Wireless Adapter. This adapter lets you connect your Xbox controller to your PC wirelessly, through the same proprietary connection used by your Xbox console.
Plug it into a USB port on your PC and let Windows install drivers. Once it’s done, press and hold the button on the adapter and you’ll see a light flash.
Next, hold the Xbox button on your controller to turn it on, then press and hold the Pair button on top of the controller. After a few seconds, the controller and adapter should see each other and connect.
From here, you can enjoy your Xbox One controller on your PC wirelessly, just like using Bluetooth. We only recommend this method if you have an Xbox One controller that’s not Bluetooth-enabled. Otherwise, you could add Bluetooth to your computer with an adapter that’s cheaper than the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

The Light Of My Battery Life
The one consolation is that Microsoft’s rechargeable battery packs have generally been pretty good in the past. My Xbox 360 battery pack lasted for about seven years before it started losing significant amounts of charge; my Xbox One battery pack is still going strong. Both of those battery packs also included a charging cable with an indicator light.
Unlike most gaming peripherals, Xbox controllers do not have a light that indicates charge. The only way to check how much power you have left is to boot up your Xbox and check the top of the home screen or install a dedicated app on your PC.;
Older Xbox battery-pack charging cables partly alleviated this problem. The LEDs on the cables would glow orange while the controller was charging, and either green or white once the charge was complete.
While Xbox One battery packs are compatible with Xbox Series X controllers, the charging cables are not, since newer controllers use USB-C rather than microUSB plugs. ;However, the Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable for Xbox Series X is a huge step backward for one simple reason: There’s no indicator light.
This may not seem like a big deal. After all, you get a battery pack and charging cable, and they work well; what more could you want? But a charging light is an invaluable thing, especially if you have only one controller.;
How To Connect Xbox Controller To Pc Using Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a convenient way of connecting your Xbox One controller and PC. However, to use it with an Xbox One controller, you must have the newer model, as shown in the image below. All Xbox Series S|X controllers support Bluetooth.
If your Xbox One controller has the plastic casing around the Xbox button, as shown in the top illustration, then it is not Bluetooth-compatible. You’ll need to use the Xbox Wireless Adapter if you want to connect your Xbox controller to your PC without Bluetooth. The bottom model, where none of the plastic surrounds the Xbox button, supports Bluetooth.
