What To Do If Youre Unable To Continue With The Parental Consent When Creating A Child Account In Xbox Live
When trying to create a child account in Xbox Live, some may have encountered an issue wherein they cannot get past the parental consent section. When tried, it continuously looped back to a previous point in the process.
Here are some reasons why this problem occurs:
- Theres missing or incorrect information in the parents or the childs Microsoft account.
- Two-step verification has been turned on for the parents Microsoft account.
- The security information on the parents Microsoft account has recently been updated and is in a 30-day waiting period for the updates to take effect.
Here are some workarounds that you can try in case you are experiencing this issue:
OPTION 1: Verify the personal information in both Microsoft accounts
NOTE:If Xbox Live prompts you to provide a credit card for parental consent validation and you dont live in the United States, this means one of the following:
- The country field in your childs Microsoft account is incorrect.
- The country field in your childs Microsoft account is blank.
Verify the personal information in the parents Microsoft account
To do this, perform the following steps:
STEP 1:Go to theMicrosoft Sign Inpage, then sign in with the parents Microsoft account email address and password.
STEP 2:Verify the following information on the Personal info page:
- Birthdate
- Postal code;
- Time zone;
STEP 3:Click Save, then click the parents name in the upper-right hand corner, and then select Sign out.
To do this, perform the following steps:

Cannot Promote Child Account Although I Am 18
So I turned 18 and still can’t promote my child account. In fact, I can’t even access account management on my Xbox. This is because I still can’t accept the terms and conditions, and thus can’t connect to xbox live, which apparently is needed . So how do I fix this? Frankly, I’m a bit pissed off, as I have an ongoing Xbox Live subscription which I haven’t been able to use for about 2 months, and Halo 4 is coming out tomorrow. I won’t be able to play it because of this ***. I am an adult and there is no reason for any sort of parental account to be linked to my gamertag.
PS: The reason I cannot accept terms and conditions is because I have lost the password for the parental account, and apparently there is no way of recovering it. I have tried everything, so don’t give me some *** answer about recovering my account. It doesn’t work.
How do I promote my account without first having to accept terms and conditions? Or is it possible to remove the parental account from my gamertag now that I’m 18? I bloody well hope it is.

If you forgot the passwords and can’t recover them, the best bet would be to call Microsoft and sort it out with them. ;Because they have access to your account and ask you to prove your identity, it would be easiest doing that.

Hi Frost,
Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. Unfortunately it is not possible to force a child account to become an adult account on Xbox Live. Changing the Microsoft Account profile age will not change the account and give adult permissions to the child account. An adult account would need to be set up separately by the parent and add the child account to a Microsoft Family group and then manage the child account while logged into the parent account to allow adult permissions on a child account. A child account cannot make any Xbox Live privacy settings without an adult account. If you already have an adult account, sign intofamily.microsoft.com. For further instructions on how to set up a family group and then manage the child account’s privacy settings, please read the following support articles:
