Why Does My Xbox One Controller Drift
If your Xbox controller is broken and you’re experiencing joystick drift, there are a few possible causes. One is something as simple as low batteries. A more common cause is dust or debris inside your controller. Over time, that grime can build up and affect the electrical components.
Analog stick drift can also be caused by damage to your controller, either from someone dropping it or excessive wear and tear. The potentiometer, a part connected to the joystick that’s responsible for sending movement signals to your console, is an especially sensitive pieceâa broken or defective one is likely to result in this issue.

Mapping Any Controller To Be Read As A Standard Xbox360 Controller
None of what is to follow can be accomplished without this first step. The sheer multitude of existing controllers and their loose implementation of “standards” presents a problem to computer software that has a limited definition of what to expect from controller input. Simply mapping a troublesome controller to be read as a standardized XBox360 controller can solve many communication problems without any additional tweaking. However, this same process can also be used to fine-tune a controller in much the same way that you might normally only find in Windows-based solutions.
First, we need to make sure xboxdrv is installed. This can be done from the ‘RetroPie Setup’ listing in the ‘RetroPie’ menu of Emulation Station. Navigate from ‘Configuration / Tools’ to ‘xboxdrv – XBox / XBox360 gamepad driver’. From here, select ‘Enable xboxdrv’ and wait for it to finish. Once installed and enabled, a configuration will be added to /etc/rc.local. Since we will be adding our own custom configuration there later, this command should be removed by selecting ‘Disable xboxdrv’ from the same menu we enabled it from. With xboxdrv now installed, we now need to discover the core-level device input codes for each button and axis on the physical controller, so that we may then map them to the virtual XBox360 controller. To do this, drop down to the command line by pressing ‘F4’ on your keyboard, then type:
It Finally Feels Good
After calibration, your controller will surely handle much better than before. Now that you know how to do it on various software, you can adjust the settings to achieve the optimum gaming experience. Youre only as good as how comfortable you feel.

How To Fix Stick Drift On Xbox One And Series X/s Controller With Pressurised Air
This is the first port of call when combatting that pesky stick drift, which is likely to be caused by a build-up of dust, grease and dead skin cells after many hours of playtime. Step one is to buy some pressurised air.
Once youve got your hands on that, you can start the process of fixing your Xbox One controller. Turn it off first, of course, then use the air tube to blow at the bottom of your analog sticks. Move them around a bit as you do so, but make sure to not do it constantly as it can damage the controller if used too much. Short, sharp bursts should do the trick.
After this is done, carefully wipe away any excess dirt and wiggle your sticks around the full range of motion for a couple of minutes. Hopefully, this will have fixed your issue.
Learn How To Fix Your Pesky Xbox One Or Xbox Series X Controller From Drifting And Disrupting Your Gameplay
Picture this: youre toddling off to find your next side quest, and suddenly your character veers off to the right instead of forwards. Or maybe youd like to stand still for a second to take in your surroundings, but your in-game protagonist has other ideas. Annoying, right?
Dont worry your pixelated hero hasnt become sentient. The more likely explanation is a phenomenon known as stick drift. While more commonly associated with the PlayStation 5s DualSense or the Joy-Cons, this can also happen to the Xbox controller, as the three controllers all use essentially the same joystick design. This is where your controllers analogue stick fails to centre itself properly after a directional push, resulting in involuntary camera or character movements.
This issue is generally caused by wear and tear, and shouldnt happen with a new controller. But the good news is that it can be fixed. There are two ways of doing this one is easy and doesnt involve opening your controller up the other does.
So, heres how to fix stick drift on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X controller.

Restricting Directional Control To Four Ways
When emulating classic video games, sometimes having a modern controller can work against you. Games like ‘Burger Time’ or the ‘Pac-Man’ series were only ever designed for 4-way directional control. This becomes a problem when using a controller with a free range of analog movement. When Pac-Man tries to turn a corner or Chef Peter Pepper tries to climb a ladder, a brief, but deadly pause often happens as a result of getting mixed directional input when the joystick hits a diagonal position. This can be eliminated in an xboxdrv control scheme by simply adding –four-way-restrictor. Using the base configuration example from the first section, it would look like this in practice:
sudo /opt/retropie/supplementary/xboxdrv/bin/xboxdrv \ --evdev /dev/input/by-id/ \ --silent \ --detach-kernel-driver \ --force-feedback \ --deadzone-trigger 15% \ --deadzone 4000 \ --mimic-xpad \ --four-way-restrictor --evdev-absmap ABS_=x1,ABS_=y1,ABS_=x2,ABS_=y2,ABS_=lt,ABS_=rt,ABS_=dpad_x,ABS_=dpad_y \ --evdev-keymap BTN_=a,BTN_=b,BTN_=x,BTN_=y,BTN_=lb,BTN_=rb,BTN_=tl,BTN_=tr,BTN_=guide,BTN_=back,BTN_=start \
Open The Calibration Tool
To find the Calibration Tool, begin by going down to your Start Menu, and selecting Settings.
Once in Settings, click on the tab for Devices:
After the next window, scroll down to the link that reads Devices and Printers inside the Printers and Scanners tab, and click on it.
From here, the controller should pop up as long as its already connected. If not, make sure you have all the latest drivers installed for the controller of your choosing.
Find the controller, and right click it to bring up the following drop-down menu. From here, click on the option for Game controller settings.
After you click this, the following window should automatically pop up. From there, click on the Properties button.
The window that follows will contain two options: Settings and Test. To start, choose the Settings tab, and then click the button in this window that reads Calibrate.
From here, the Calibration Wizard will automatically begin taking you through the process to get your controller set up properly.

With the Xbox Accessories app open and your controller connected, click the three horizontal dots icon. If an update is available, the button on the left will say soâclick it to begin the update process. If not, it’ll read No update available.
Why Is My Xbox One Controller Not Calibrated
You will know you need to calibrate Xbox One controller when youre having trouble playing. Wrong calibration settings produce random movement during your playtime.
In particular, the issue may rely on the Axis, which is your X-Y-Z movement and perspective.
A non-calibrated controller is a common issue on these occasions:
- Youre using a new controller on your Windows PC
- Youre using a very old controller on your Windows PC
- You havent used the controller for a while on your PC
- Steam, Epic Games, or Windows automatically changed your controllers settings after an update
- Theres physical damage like wear, tear, dust or rust in the controller.
For all causes, the steps are the same. Bear in mind that Xbox One calibration has nothing to do with your PCs drivers or the controllers firmware. Either way, keeping both up to date is best to avoid connectivity issues.

Personalizing Your Controller’s Id Name
After fine-tuning your controller, you may want to give it a personalized ID. Outside of the novelty, this technique can be used as a tool to separate identification of multiple identical controllers in some software that can otherwise get confused when identically named controllers are discovered. To do this, you would replace –mimic-xpad with –device-name “My Most Non-Non-Triumphant Controller Name Here”. Using the base configuration example from the first section, it would look like this in practice:
sudo /opt/retropie/supplementary/xboxdrv/bin/xboxdrv \ --evdev /dev/input/by-id/ \ --silent \ --detach-kernel-driver \ --force-feedback \ --deadzone-trigger 15% \ --deadzone 4000 \ --device-name "My Most Non-Non-Triumphant Controller Name Here" \ --evdev-absmap ABS_=x1,ABS_=y1,ABS_=x2,ABS_=y2,ABS_=lt,ABS_=rt,ABS_=dpad_x,ABS_=dpad_y \ --evdev-keymap BTN_=a,BTN_=b,BTN_=x,BTN_=y,BTN_=lb,BTN_=rb,BTN_=tl,BTN_=tr,BTN_=guide,BTN_=back,BTN_=start \&
Converting Analog Triggers To Digital
This next one is a quick, easy and very effective for retro-gamers. Pressure sensitive analog triggers bring an extra level of realism and control to the few games that can make use of them, such as Mame racing games. However, most retro games and console emulation software don’t really benefit from analog triggers and in some cases, they can slow response time and even prevent functionality altogether. For these reasons, it is generally suggested that analog triggers be converted to digital input in almost all cases. to do this, you would simply add –trigger-as-button to your xboxdrv configuration. Using the base configuration example from the first section, it would look like this in practice:
sudo /opt/retropie/supplementary/xboxdrv/bin/xboxdrv \ --evdev /dev/input/by-id/ \ --silent \ --detach-kernel-driver \ --force-feedback \ --deadzone-trigger 15% \ --deadzone 4000 \ --trigger-as-button \ --mimic-xpad \ --evdev-absmap ABS_=x1,ABS_=y1,ABS_=x2,ABS_=y2,ABS_=lt,ABS_=rt,ABS_=dpad_x,ABS_=dpad_y \ --evdev-keymap BTN_=a,BTN_=b,BTN_=x,BTN_=y,BTN_=lb,BTN_=rb,BTN_=tl,BTN_=tr,BTN_=guide,BTN_=back,BTN_=start \&

Why Would I Need To Do This
There are times when a controller develops strange readings and settings, particularly if youre using it in platforms youre not supposed to. Using a PS4 or PS5 controller on a PC might result in some suboptimal settings and deadzones, for example.
With calibration, youre making it feel better on the platform youre using. Of course, adjusting game settings can help, but there are times when calibration is better.
Normally, Xbox controllers are pre-calibrated to work well on PC, but if you notice it feeling strange, you can always calibrate it to ensure it works well.
Older controllers can also become less accurate when you use them for a long time. Calibration helps give it a new lease in life, though it doesnt fix all problems. If not even intensive calibration is working for your controller, then its time to get a new one.
