Don’t panic, the world of memory cards for your saves is looooong gone, but there’s a brand new feature / accessory for the Xbox Series X that’s putting a new spin on the idea of memory cards. The Xbox Series X Storage Expansion Card was announced as part of the Xbox Series X tech unveiling, and “provides additional game storage at peak speed and performance by replicating the console’s internal custom SSD experience. The 1TB card is inserted directly into the back of the console via the dedicated storage expansion port.” No word on price yet, but it’ll be the best way to boost the Xbox Series X internal storage for more games.

Nobody Knows Yet But There Are Arguments To Be Made For Both High And Low

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are coming this year, but both Microsoft and Sony have been extremely cagey about pricing, leading many to fear the worst. Neither side of the console war wants to be first with pricing, and for good reason: Microsoft announced the Xbox Ones $499 launch price and was instantly undercut by Sonys $399 PS4.

In other words, showing your hand too early is asking for trouble, which means were in an amusing game of chicken. They have to reveal pricing before release, but which company will make the first move is still very much up for grabs.

In the meantime, we can but speculate. So just how much will the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X cost? Annoyingly, you can make cases for both enticingly cheap and eye-wateringly expensive.

How To Buy Xbox Series X Series S Via Xbox All Access

Microsoft also launched Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S with the revival of Xbox All Access, its 24-month financing program, designed to spread to cost for next-gen hardware. The all-inclusive contract bundles either device with its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, with no interest or hidden fees. Pricing comes in two flavors, with Xbox Series S costing $25 per month, while Xbox Series X comes in at $35 per month.

Xbox Game Pass includes various Microsoft gaming services, headlined by its Xbox Game Pass library, granting unlimited access to hundreds of Xbox and PC games. The Netflix-style service now even includes all Microsoft-published titles like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza on launch day, as well as Electronic Arts titles with the new EA Play deal. It also includes Xbox Live Gold, providing access to online multiplayer on Xbox consoles, and Xbox Game Pass’ cloud gaming on Android devices.

However, buyers should understand that Xbox All Access comes with risks. This isn’t your average subscription service, where you can cancel at any time. Xbox All Access is a 24-month contractual obligation, where Microsoft pulls in an external financing agency, including a credit check to determine eligibility. It eases the initial investment, but you’ll need to pay on time every month, adding up over time.

Cost Of Building A Pc In Australia

Building a PC that can accomplish the same as the PS5 and Xbox Series X is a bit complicated, and theres a couple of reasons why.

Firstly, consoles are traditionally sold at a loss. That doesnt mean retailers like JB Hi-Fi are losing money on the consoles, but Sony and Microsoft famously sell them at a loss to recoup more money on games, services and these days, microtransactions. That doesnt happen in the PC world, so theres a higher margin on every individual piece of tech.

So to do this fairly, Im going to spec out a couple of systems. The first is a PC matching how much you would spend on the Xbox Series X or the PS5 over three years. You could just build a PC around the upfront cost, but part of the PC platform is bearing an upfront cost for a longer-term benefit, so I think its fairer and more realistic to build it out that way.

The second PC will be one that can match the current capabilities of the new consoles. For this, Im targeting something that can hit 1440p/120FPS or 4K/120 FPS in esports titles . This also matches the reality for the PS5 and Xbox Series X: they dont hit a locked 120 FPS at 4K anyway, but its also still very early days for developers.

New Games No Hardware

Say you dont own an Xbox or a gaming PC, but you do have an Android phone. Does Microsoft have any next-gen gaming options for you? Thanks to game streaming, it does. On September 15th, Microsoft added game streaming to Xbox Games Pass Ultimate, which costs $14.99 a month. The feature, which was known previously as xCloud, could give you a way to play many of the biggest Xbox Series X games without having to own any gaming hardware at all. You can stream them to a device as simple as an Android phone, for example .

Game streaming isnt an entirely new idea Sony launched its PlayStation Now service way back in 2014 to a muted response but Microsoft is taking a much more interesting approach. Rather than focusing on older titles, as Sony did with PlayStation Now, Microsoft says its new games will be available to stream the day they release and lists recent first-party titles like Forza Horizon 4, Gears of War 5, Tell Me Why, The Outer Worlds, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps as being among the 150-plus games available to stream at launch.

Faster Performance Higher Frame Rates

How Much Are The PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series X Going To Cost?

The Xbox Series X and Series S have dramatically more powerful CPUs than previous-generation consoles didin the neighborhood of four times as powerful as their predecessor in raw speed and the number of cores and threads, to say nothing of seven years worth of efficiency and other improvements. This means faster user interfaces and much faster load times,1 as well as more sophisticated character and game behaviors, and just more stuff on screen at any given moment.

But the biggest improvements are most apparent in frame rates, which should hit 60 frames per second much more often this generation than last. The more frames per second, the more often the controller and the game are communicating. So a new Series X or Series S should feel like it responds faster and more reliably to your inputs. And when games cant maintain consistent frame rates, support for variable refresh rates should help keep those games from feeling unresponsive.

These improvements have come to a number of existing titles originally released for the Xbox One Gears 5, the entirety of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps have all received 120 FPS updates for the Xbox Series X and Series S.

Xbox Series X Xbox Series S: Which Is For You

Microsoft enters the next generation with a two-pronged approach, divided between the Xbox Series X flagship and the more affordable Xbox Series S. It comes with the company looking to serve enthusiasts with the most powerful console on the market, while still providing a more budget-friendly alternative for the average consumer. The upcoming devices represent sizeable leaps over Xbox One, embracing the same shared values. Check our full breakdown of Xbox Series X versus Xbox Series S for additional context.

Xbox Series X represents Microsoft’s next-generation frontrunner, ushering hugely revamped hardware to increase performance, reduce loading times, and more. The console features top-tier hardware, including the latest AMD Zen 2 processor and Navi GPU architectures, flanked by a custom NVMe solid-state drive with speeds up to 40 times faster than Xbox One X.

The Xbox Series S arrives with a similar premise but scaled back with reduced graphical power and near half the retail cost. The compromise comes with the hardware inside the box, with a lower-spec GPU, reduced RAM, and smaller-capacity NVMe SSD. The console also pulls the disc drive, making this a digital-only variant.
