What I Did Wrong The First Time
A couple years ago when I first tried to upgrade the RAM in the Xbox I didn’t have any luck. The system wasn’t able to boot no matter how many times I tried to rework the RAM chips.
One of the key things I didn’t do was use XBlast OS and test each RAM chip as I went. This is super useful since it isn’t an all or nothing installation. If a single chip doesn’t work you can see that and rework just that single chip. It removes a lot of the guess work.
The other problem I ran into was just not using the right tools, primarily from a lack of experience. I attempted to use a heat gun to reflow the RAM chips onto the existing solder on the board. In theory this should work, but it didn’t. A hot air rework station would have been a better tool for that method since it would allow a more focused flow of heat.
I found that the drag soldering method really is the ideal method for upgrading the RAM in an original Xbox.
Sourcing Original Xbox Ram Chips
To upgrade the RAM in your original Xbox you’ll need to get your hands on four extra RAM chips. There are two main ways to do this.
The first way to get extra RAM chips is to remove them from another original Xbox board. This is what I did because I already had a broken original Xbox board. The downside of this method is that you need to sacrifice an original Xbox, and that there’s a chance the RAM will be damaged if you heat it up too much while desoldering it.
From my understanding all of the RAM from any original Xbox is compatible with any other original Xbox. In my case I was able to put Samsung K4D263238F-QC50 RAM into a system that originally had Samsung K4D263238D-QC50 RAM.
Removing RAM from an original Xbox is pretty simple. Just heat up the pins of the RAM chip with a hot air rework station, then remove the chip when the solder melts enough. Using flux can help, but it isn’t really necessary.
The other way to get extra RAM chips is to purchase them from the internet. I don’t know any US suppliers that supply compatible RAM chips at a decent price, but there are tons of Chinese suppliers that do. Just search a place like eBay or AliExpress for the model number of the RAM chips that are inside your console.
A Look Back On The Original Xbox
While the Xbox One might be Microsofts latest and greatest console, sometimes going back to a systems roots results in finding something just as fun whats on store shelves today. I recently purchased an original Xbox and plenty of games for it, and its great to see how it all started. The system was Microsofts attempt to get into the console market back in 2001, and it ended up revolutionizing it.
The original Xbox was the most powerful console in the sixth generation of consoles, and was also the very first console with a hard drive. This meant that gamers no longer had to keep buying memory cards, like with the PS2 and Gamecube, or rely on save batteries in cartridges like the Gameboy Advance. This also gave the Xbox the ability to store ripped music from CDs and downloadable content .
The systems processor was a custom made 733MHz Pentium III, and the GPU was a custom card made by Nvidia with capabilities similar to the GeForce 3 Ti500, the system also had 64MB of RAM, and a 8GB hard drive. For comparison, the PlayStation 2 had a 294MHz processor , 32MB of RAM. There was no hard drive, although external ones could be purchased.
The cord for each controller also featured a fairly innovative design, too. Each cord had a breakaway cable on the end, which would disconnect from the controller if yanked too hard. This prevented any of the usual damage youd expect from pulling the cord, and its actually helpful.

Original Xbox Stock Cooling System Overview
The original Xbox has a pretty simple cooling system design. There is a single 72mm fan in the back that sucks air in from the vents on the sides. The air goes through components like the power supply, processor, and graphics processor, and then out the back of the system. Both the disc drive tray, and hard drive tray, are used to route air where it needs to go. The fan does a pretty good job of keeping the console cool. I’ve never had my original Xbox overheat, but it can get warm.
To silence my Xbox I needed to find and install a fan that can pull at least an equivalent amount of air through the system quietly. I chose the Noctua NF-A8 because I already had a couple extra from a previous computer build. If you want to minimize the amount of cutting you’ll need to do then look for something closer in shape and size to the stock 72mm fan.

A Journey To Remember
Like many games on this list, the player can choose a class and develop certain skill attributes while travelling through the different levels while you prepare to battle an evil god.
The plot is like Lord Of The Rings on turbo mode and is so complicated that It would take me another hour to explain it in terms that were easy to understand, but thats what makes RPG games so exciting role play is supposed to be nerdy, after all!
Once again, the XBOXs graphics look incredible considering the output and the game itself was so immersive I could lose myself in it for hours.
Its a true gem and, unsurprisingly, another winner of game of the year. This console is like a portable awards ceremony!
Halo: Combat Evolved might have been the game that changed shooting titles forever, but Halo 2 was the one that drove the brand to insane heights. It brought about books, clothes, lunch boxes, costumes, and tonnes of other merchandise that helped to sell this incredible title. Halo 2 was more than just a game it was an XBOX institution.
This sequel sees upgraded weapons, maps, and new vehicles. XBOX live multiplayer on those incredible maps was something else it was like Metroid Prime on steroids!
Once again, players control the Master Chief as he destroys The Flood while romping around the Halo, which turns out was an ancient weapon all along. Who would have thought it?

Back in 1995, Grand Theft Auto was little more than a pipe dream. It was originally pitched as a simple 2D game called RacenChase. That is, until the development team at Rockstar Games realized the titles potential and shifted strategies. The revamped version upped the ante with more complex artwork and a name change: enter Grand Theft Auto.
The results were spectacular! It sold millions of copies, and Rockstar quickly began development on new titles for the series, including Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas, aka The Trilogy.

A New Toy And A New Look
In both 2009 and 2010, June proved to be an important month for the 360. First, the motion- and voice-control peripheral that would eventually become Kinect was announced in June 2009 at that years E3 convention. Originally labeled Project Natal , the device was expected to revolutionize the way 360 owners interacted with both their console and the media connected with it. The Kinect arrived on shelves in November of that year.
One year after the Kinect was announced, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 would be getting a major redesign, with a thinner body, upgraded internal specs, additional USB ports, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Xbox 360 S hit shelves a few days later on June 18, 2010.

Second Generation: Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.
The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. The second major revision of the Xbox 360 was the Xbox 360 E, released in 2013. It featured a case style similar to the upcoming Xbox One, and eliminated one USB port and the S/PDIF, YPbPr component and S-video connections, but otherwise shared the same specifications as the Xbox 360 S.
A Merger Of Two Giants
There is no question that Bill Gates is a smart businessman. He has built an empire that continues to play a major part in computer hardware and software development and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Hed always loved gaming and so when it came time to make his own console he went to a company with knowledge for help.
Bill Gates wanted to make a console that truly bridged the gap between PC and console gaming.
Though Microsoft had a ton of experience with computers, they didnt know much about the game console market and so Bill Gates thought that partnering with a giant like Sony was the best option. Though he thought that he had a good business model to entice Sony with, the console giant turned down his proposal. From that point on he set out to crush the company, even nicknaming the console project Midway.

What’s The Point Of Upgrading The Ram
The truth about upgrading the RAM in an original Xbox is that it isn’t incredibly useful. You don’t really see any benefits while playing retail games or anything like that. There are however some benefits of upgrading the RAM.
So an original Xbox 128MB RAM upgrade isn’t quite as useful as a hardmod or softmod for the system. It’s more of a mod for those who want to try out those Sega arcade games, run additional emulators, or get into Xbox game development.

How Long Will The Xbox One Last
Since the Xbox One is an aging console, eventually it won’t receive new games anymore. But how long should you expect the Xbox One to receive support?
To get an idea, consider the last generation. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 and was discontinued in 2016. After the Xbox One launched in 2013, the Xbox 360 continued to receive some cross-generation games.
2014’s Forza Horizon 2 was the last Xbox 360 entry in the Xbox-exclusive series, while 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider came to both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For yearly third-party titles, 2016’s Madden NFL 17 was the last Madden released on Xbox 360.
However, since the Xbox One S and One X both launched mid-generation in 2016, these past patterns may not predict what happens this time.

Is The Original Xbox Worth Anything
I have an Xbox at my dad’s house, it has only ever been used about 5 times and is in fantastic condition. Do you guys know if people still buy them? How much can they go for?
20-60 dollars depending on condition and what else you’re selling with it but even then, I wouldn’t expect a quick sell.
It’s definitely not worth much my mind gets blown every time I see people on Craigslist trying to sell an original Xbox for $250 or trade for an Xbox One just because they’re throwing in 15 outdated games and a few controllers.
Thanks for letting me know.
Not much at all. I think they are mostly around $20 each and I know the ones a lot of people have are emulators.
I know the ones a lot of people have are emulators
You mean they are setup to run emulators, or its some kind of fake xbox?
Hack it and play emus on it. ..or sell it for $20. Up to you.
I know a guy that can do it. I’ll look into it.
Look on eBay and search listings. Make sure to look at “Completed Listings” to see what similar items actually sold or didn’t sell for. Sold items’ price will be in green, unsold will be in red. This is a better method than looking simply at the prices that people are currently asking, because you can ask any price, but it doesn’t mean anyone’s gonna pay it.
Hope this helps.
