Xbox Series X: Platform And Os

New Xbox Series X Controller

Microsoft will deploy the same OS to Xbox Series X that is available now on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X, albeit with some design refinements you can see a glimpse of in the above video, showcasing the new Fluent Design Xbox dashboard. New fluent elements, new fonts, and a dashboard designed to support 4K TVs are among things being considered for dashboard improvements in the future. Additionally, the Xbox Series X will support animated Dynamic Themes, taking cues from PlayStation. The first theme is a wavy pattern, although we expect more to be added for launch.

For developers, Microsoft is working on a new developer environment dubbed GameCore, which will reportedly bring Xbox development more closely in line to that of Win32 on PC. Additionally, GameCore comes with other benefits for developers, allowing games to scale more seamlessly across different Xbox SKUs without additional work, scaling resolution, and other details to meet various power levels. This sort of system is ideal for the Xbox Series S console, which will output games at up to 1440p with a vastly more powerful CPU and SSD than on the Xbox One consoles. We’ve heard that GameCore as a development environment is currently in a beta state, which a couple of smaller games are planning to launch using early versions of the tools around the Xbox Series X launch.

How To Save Money On Xbox Series X

Alright, so the Xbox Series X price is still a hefty chunk of cash to spend. But you don’t necessarily have to pay it off in one go. Enter Microsoft’s fancy Xbox All Access system. This is a payment plan, and it allows you to get an Xbox Series X for a monthly fee spread over two years. It’ll set you back $34.99 per month in the US, £28.99p/m in the UK, and $46p/m in Australia.

Interestingly, Xbox All Access doesn’t just get you the console. It also offers 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate as well. Because Game Pass is a bit like Netflix for gaming , that’s a solid deal. Particularly due to the fact that new Xbox exclusive games like Halo will appear on Game Pass for free on the day of release.

Thanks to this, Xbox All Access might be one of the more sensible options when it comes to buying an Xbox Series X. Indeed, it saves you money in the long run. Sure, you’re only getting a small amount knocked off the overall price, but it’s still cheaper than buying the console and two years of Game Pass separately.

However, be advised that you won’t find Xbox All Access in many stores besides Microsoft. GameStop fills that role in the US, and Game or Smyths have the honor in the UK.

Spare Xbox Wireless Controller: $59/54

The new Xbox Wireless Controller is a rather lovely gamepad, offering a neat upgrade over its predecessor. And that makes it one of our favorite ever controllers once again. But the Xbox Series X only comes with one controller in the box, so if you want to indulge in some split-screen co-op Halo, you’ll need to get another.

Thatll set you back an extra $59/£54, which isnt unreasonable for such a good controller. But it all adds to the overall price of the Xbox Series X at least you get a choice of blue, black or white. Bear in mind older Xbox Wireless Controllers can be paired with the Series X, so if youre coming over from the Xbox One, you could avoid this extra expense.

  • Massive Storage and Memory: Xbox Series X boasts 16GB of GDDR6 RAM and a 1TB SSD, which is plenty of storage and speed. Xbox Series X Vs Xbox One X Price

The Xbox Series X costs $499 / £449 / AU$749, and matches the original MSRP of the Xbox One X. While this is, admittedly, very expensive, the Xbox Series X packs a lot of technology into its cuboid frame.

The problem right now is that the console is notoriously hard to find, with stock continuing to snapped up as soon as it appears, which can make it hard to find where to buy Xbox Series X.

However, the Xbox One X has had big price cuts over the past few months. Weve seen the console drop well below its original asking price, but as Microsoft has since discontinued the Xbox One X, stock is becoming harder to find. If you do see an enticing deal, then, its worth snapping it up straight away.

Xbox Series X: It Just Works

The Xbox Series X looks like an Xbox One that swallowed a refrigerator, and runs like an Xbox One that swallowed a Lambo. Its fast, sturdy, and unobtrusive, its goals and capabilities encapsulated in its brutalist industrial design.

Its contemporary, the PlayStation 5, comes with a futuristic new controller and a space-age console design that looks like an abandoned Epcot pavilion. It looks and feels like a destination, because it is: Sonys future lives on its latest console. Similarly, the minimalist design of the Xbox Series X speaks to Microsofts own ambitions. Behold, the video game equivalent of the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey. A big, blunt brick that radiates power.

The Xbox Series X isnt the home of Microsofts gaming universe its just one of many nodes, connecting outward to your phone, your tablet, your computer, or just a different Xbox. Its not the place to play video games. Its a place to play video games not only from the future, but also from the present and the past.

The Xbox Series X is boring. I wouldnt have it any other way.

Another Way To Score A Microsoft Series X Or Series X At A Great Price

Microsoft has a second way to buy Series X or Series S consoles in addition to outright console purchases. If you sign up for a 24-month subscription to Xbox All Access, you get a Series X or Series S console plus the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass Ultimate includes a library of more than 100 games, including online multiplayer games and EA Play, a second library of Electronic Arts titles. In addition, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can play Xbox Game Studios games immediately after release, plus you can play Xbox games on compatible smartphones or tablets. The Xbox All Access subscription for the Series X console costs $35 a month for 24 months, and the Series S All Access subscription is $25 a month.

If you were going to subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription anyway, the normal cost is $15 per month. With the Xbox Series X and Series S 24-month Xbox All Access subscription, you save $20 for the Series X and $60 for the Series S. Buying an Xbox All Access subscription in hopes of getting your hands on a Series X or Series S console earlier doesnt work, however, because Microsoft sells the Xbox All Access packages through the same retailers that sell the consoles for a single purchase cost.

What Do The Xbox Series X Specs Mean

At the heart of Xbox Series X lies a custom-designed CPU founded on AMD’s Zen 2 architecture. Previously behind chipsets fueling the Xbox One family, the leading U.S. manufacturer extends efforts via its latest processor technology. The Zen 2 family touts improved performance and efficiency, with Xbox Series X poised to deliver four times the CPU power of Xbox One X. With the current Xbox flagship heavily reliant on its GPU advancements, Scarlett’s revamped system-on-chip helps alleviate a primary bottleneck.

A Navi-based GPU flanks the Zen 2 brains, powered by AMD’s latest wave of RDNA graphics technologies. It assembles a formidable SoC for next-generation gaming, clocking in at 12 teraflops, indicating its ability to process 12 trillion floating-point operations per second. In short, that means a console vastly superior to anything on the market and on track to surpass some of the best graphics cards like the GeForce RTX 2080.

The Xbox Series X also comes with the added capabilities of “hardware-accelerated” ray tracing. NVIDIA has already drawn eyes with its GeForce RTX GPU lineup’s real-time ray tracing capabilities, and both Microsoft and Sony are set to follow suit for more realistic lighting.

The result is a future-facing console built on strong foundations, already pushing the higher end of the PC market. Paired with the benefits of SSD storage, Xbox Series X establishes a promising baseline for the next generation of consoles.
