We’ll keep tracking Xbox One X offers just below in case retailers list super cheap stock ahead of the new console, but it’s likely to be out of stock now.

A Game Pass Powerhouse
If theres any reason to opt for an Xbox Series S over other consoles, though, it would be to access the fantastic Xbox Game Pass subscription service at a lower cost of entry. While the base Xbox Game Pass subscription will cost you a monthly fee of $9.99 / £7.99, this regularly updated catalog of games can be downloaded and played with no limits.
The Xbox Series S has a reputation as being a Game Pass machine, then. As the console has no optical disc drive, you instead need to rely on digital purchases to get your gaming fix. But thanks to a service like Xbox Game Pass, loads of titles are immediately available to play at the cost of one monthly sub.
Of course, such a vast collection of games will soon fill up that 512GB SSD, so if you are planning on buying an Xbox Series S, wed also recommend investing in an additional external SSD like the official Seagate Xbox Storage Expansion Card, which adds roughly 1TB more to your consoles storage. These days, the card can be bought for much less than its original eye-watering retail price, so its well worth looking into if youre looking to download plenty of games with Xbox Game Pass.

What To Look Forward To
Well continue to test the Xbox Series X and Series S as software arrives, and well update this guide with our thoughts and impressions on the user experience accordingly. Additionally, Wirecutter senior staff writer Chris Heinonen, who is responsible for much of our television coverage, has tested the Xbox Series X as well as just about every major 2020 and 2021 television model with HDMI 2.1 support, and has screen recommendations for various budgets to get the most out of the new consoles.
Xbox Series X Review: Ports
Keeping with the clean look, the Xbox Series X has only a USB 3.1 Type-A port and a Blu-ray disc drive on the consoles front. There’s also a wireless controller pairing button. That makes it very easy to quickly plug in a controller to charge, or an external hard drive to transfer games and saves to and from the Series X.
Around the back of the Series X, theres a much wider port selection. Youll find one HDMI 2.1 port: crucial for gaming at 8K, and allowing TVs with 120 Hz panels to take advantage of the 120 frames per second frame rate for certain games. There are also two more USB 3.1 ports – handy for external storage that you plan to keep connected to your console – as well as an Ethernet port and Kensington lock.
Theres no optical audio connection or HDMI-in port, like there were on the Xbox One and One X. However, dropping optical audio is likely to be a pain for only people with powerful audio systems, and the HDMI connection can still carry Dolby Atmos and surround sound signals. Were not really sure if many people used the HDMI-in, so dropping it from the Series X isnt a big deal. It also avoids any chance of plugging an HDMI cable into the wrong port, then wondering why your TV isnt getting a signal: something that’s happened to me before.
The most noteworthy port however, is the expansion slot. This is for the proprietary external PCIe 4.0 SSD that will let you expand the Series X with an extra 1 TB of speedy storage.

The Fastest Most Powerful Xbox Ever Created
The Xbox Series X effectively doubles the power capabilities of the Xbox One X, featuring a staggering 12 teraflops of power compared to its predecessors 6. Combine this with a Custom 8-core AMD Zen 2 that should make load times almost a thing of the past, and you have a home console capable of running the latest games at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Whats more, Xbox Series X can actually reach levels of 8K and 120fps for certain games, providing theyre developed with this in mind.
Faster Performance Higher Frame Rates
The Xbox Series X and Series S have dramatically more powerful CPUs than previous-generation consoles didin the neighborhood of four times as powerful as their predecessor in raw speed and the number of cores and threads, to say nothing of seven years worth of efficiency and other improvements. This means faster user interfaces and much faster load times,1 as well as more sophisticated character and game behaviors, and just more stuff on screen at any given moment.
But the biggest improvements are most apparent in frame rates, which should hit 60 frames per second much more often this generation than last. The more frames per second, the more often the controller and the game are communicating. So a new Series X or Series S should feel like it responds faster and more reliably to your inputs. And when games cant maintain consistent frame rates, support for variable refresh rates should help keep those games from feeling unresponsive. Recent examples here include Diablo 2: Resurrected and Psychonauts 2, both of which offer 60 FPS modes on Series X and S unavailable on the Xbox One. The upcoming Battlefield 2042, is supposed to run at 60 FPS, but never manages it on Xbox One or even the PlayStation 4. On the Series X and S, performance in the recent beta was consistently smooth.

Microsoft Has Confirmed Backwards Compatibility For The Xbox Series X
Jason Ronald, director of program management for Xbox Series X, has confirmed on a Xbox Wire blog post that thousands of backwards compatible games will be available on the console at launch.

Ronald added that older games will run the peak performance that they were originally designed for, many times even higher performance than the games saw on their original launch platform. This will result in higher and more steady frame rates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality.
In the post, Roland also the consoles Quick Resume feature, which allows players to start a game exactly where they left off previously, will be available for older titles too. The new Quick Resume feature was designed to not only work with new games, but it can also be enabled for backward-compatible titles, he said.

Xbox Series X Price Vs Playstation 5 Price
After many leaks and speculation, Sony confirmed the PS5 Digital and PS5 prices at £360 and £450 respectively. That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced much higher than the rival Xbox Series X.
As it turns out, the full-fat PS5 and Xbox Series X cost the same, although the all-digital Series S undercuts the PS5 Digital Edition by a fair margin of £90 .
Bear in mind, however, that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive.

Xbox Series X Review: Games
On the whole, there aren’t a huge amout of new Xbox Series X games that are exclusive for the console. And neither will there be, as games will also need to be playable on the Xbox Series S, as well as come to Windows 10, and soon Windows 11, PCs.
However, the Xbox Series X and Series S will have upcoming console exclusives in the from of Halo Infinite, Fable 4 and Starfield, as well as a bevy of other titles checkout our recap of the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase at E3 2021 for a full breakdown.
But while you wait for those games there’s a bevy of Xbox Series X and Series S enhanced games to play. The likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 4, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Sea of Thieves will all run better on the Xbox Series X than other Xbox hardware. Do bear in mind that some games will chew through SSD space, including the upcoming Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl.

Which Is The Best Xbox Console
Choosing the best Xbox console in 2021 comes down to personal preference and what you look for in a device. The largest factor to consider is functionality balancing whether the performance meets your expectations with compatibility for the games you play. The Xbox Series X might be Microsoft’s best console by the spec sheet, but several alternatives are available, each delivering rich functionality and hefty savings.
The Xbox Series S is a prime example, launching alongside Xbox Series X as a budget-friendly, next-generation games console. The device aims to deliver the flagship Xbox hallmarks, built to run the latest cutting-edge games far beyond the lifespan of Xbox One. That means almost identical features, chiefly scaling back visual quality and axing the optical disc drive. That low-cost entry may prove alluring for casual gaming, especially when coupled with an Xbox Game Pass membership.
But even with the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S family, there’s value in older Xbox One consoles. They’re capable gaming consoles and cheaper than ever, without the supply issues facing the newest Xbox hardware. They support almost every new video game available right now, too, with many future titles like Halo Infinite also slated for the console.
What Will The Xbox Series X Uk Price Be
The Xbox Series X has been confirmed as retailing with an RRP of £449.99. This is about in-line with the traditional launch price for a console, and given the high-end components included in the console, including an SSD and significant amounts of GPU, its a solid price. What makes a pleasant change is the price is kinder to the UK than is usual on console pricing. In the past, consoles have launched with the same price tag in Euros and US Dollars as in pound sterling, so its actually beneficial to pick the console up at its UK price. For that price, youll also recieve the revamped wireless controller design, and dont be surprised if theres a few extra goodies such as Xbox Game Pass trial memberships included too.

Xbox Series X Restock News: Where To Buy An Xbox Series X Console In 2022
Despite launching over 14 months ago, the Xbox Series X is still incredibly hard to find. That’s unheard of not only in the gaming world, but in the entire universe of consumer electronics high-profile devices like games consoles or new smartphones are often in short supply shorty after launch, but supply constraints are usually sorted out within weeks. This time it’s different.
COVID-19 has caused manufacturing delays, resulting in a global chip shortage affecting everything from smartphones and smartwatches to consoles and cars. Add in the sustained high demand from millions of people plunged into lockdowns or forced to self-isolate, and you’ve got a perfect storm for console shortages.
Sadly, these shortages will be here for a while yet. At the end of last year, Xbox’s Phil Spencer said the issues would be a problem “for months and months”. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Xbox stock drops are becoming more frequent, if not regular. And the lower-specced Xbox Series S is a lot easier to get hold of, so hope is not lost.

Is The Xbox Series S Worth It
The Xbox Series S is absolutely still worth buying in 2022. Microsofts wallet-friendly console boasts many of the same quality features as the Series X, is much easier to actually buy in the first place, and is arguably the easiest entry point to accessing the incredible Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription services.
But it is worth noting that the Series S isnt without its drawbacks. As mentioned earlier, the relatively small amount of storage on the SSD is lamentable, especially considering the Series S is a digital-only machine. Thats really the biggest issue with the console in our minds, with the less powerful processor and 1440p resolution target for gaming are only slight drawbacks at best.
So if youre in the market for a new console, and either cant afford an Xbox Series X or are simply tired of waiting for stock to appear, dont count out the Xbox Series S. Not only will you save yourself a lot of money and time, youll end up owning one of Microsofts best consoles to date.
Xbox Series X Vs Series S Vs Ps5
The difference in power generally means early Series S and Series X games run at different resolutions but often perform similarly. For example, Watch Dogs: Legion targets 4K at 30fps on the Series X and 1080p 30fps on the Series S, and both support ray-tracing for better-looking reflections.
Similarly, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon run at 60fps at 1080p on the Series S, compared to 4K 60fps on the Series X.

Quick Resume Acts Like The Ultimate Pause Button
Using their fast storage access, the Xbox Series X and Series S allow you to suspend almost any game by creating a snapshot of it in system memory. You can then start another game, watch a movie, or even turn off and completely unplug your console. The next time you start the game in question, itll pick up exactly where you left off. Its a lot like switching between open apps on a smartphone, and you can do it with several games at once. Games already boot up faster on the new consoles because of their storage speed, and if youre playing more than one thing, switching between games using quick resume saves a lot of time and frustration because you skip any menus and save/load screens that you might otherwise be forced to navigate. And in the few months weve been using the console, every time we boot up a game for the first time in weeks only to load up exactly where we left off in seconds is a delightful experience.
Initially, Quick Resume support was somewhat spotty, with several games encountering problems with the feature but recent patches have improved overall stability, though there are still occasional, unavoidable issues. For titles like the 2018 remaster of Dark Souls, which uses an always online server system, Quick Resume just about always results in a server disconnect, which will boot you to the title screen .
Is The Xbox One S Price Worth It In 2020
So, Xbox Series X is on the way and there’s even a 4K Xbox One X in front of the lowly S in the race to next-gen. That means it might feel difficult to justify the Xbox One S price in 2020, considering there’s so much more just about to break over the horizon.
If you’re happy to drop your disk drive, we’d recommend waiting for the Xbox Series S. However, if you’ve got a substantial physical collection you want to make the most of while you wait for the Series X top drop in price, picking up an Xbox One S deal might be worth it. Plus, with Xbox Game Pass deals offering even cheaper access to titles, you really do stand to save a significant amount of money with these Xbox One S prices.
