Its not terribly hard to find the right the headset, but there are still definitely a few things to consider when youre on the hunt. Here are the best options we could findbased on our reviews, as well as research into products we havent gotten our hands on yet.

Editors note: this list was updated on April 9, 2021 to include the Razer Kaira Wireless and Corsair HS75 XB Wireless in the Notable Mentions section.

Comfortable & Intuitive Design

Play comfortably for hours with the ultra-soft earcups, lightweight design, and customizable fit. The rotating earcup dials of the new Xbox Wireless Headset provide an intuitive way to change volume and game/chat balance. Quickly adjust and get back to the game. Fully adjustable mic tucks up and out of the way when not in use.

How Does Microsoft Xbox Wireless Headset Connect

Like other Xbox Wireless devices, the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Headset is built primarily to connect to Xbox consoles without a dongle via the Xbox Wireless connection standard. All you have to do is pair with your console, and youre off to the racesjust like hooking up a controller. However, if youre a PC gamer, and youve decided this is the headset for you, youll have to buy an Xbox Wireless Adapter, which runs for around $25 USD. This has been the status quo for a long time now, but its still ridiculous to need to spend that much more money just to let your headset work wirelessly on your computer.

However, this Xbox gaming headset is a little less hamstrung by its connection method than most, offering a few alternative options if you dont want to pay the dongle toll. For starters, the headset supports wired audio via its USB-C port, so you can plug it into your PC to charge and continue to use it. The headset also supports Bluetooth connections, using the 4.2 firmwareit only supports the SBC codec, so you wont high-quality audio on any platform, but itll do in a pinch.

Microsoft Xbox Wireless Headset

Stealth 700 Gaming Headset for Xbox One Turtle Beach®

Normally, were pretty hesitant to recommend the official offering of any given platform because, well they often suckSony is among the best at making headphones, not so much when it comes to making gaming headsets, for instance. However, its clear here that Microsoft made an effort to improve on the most consistent shortcomings of wireless headsets for the Xbox: PC compatibility.

The Xbox Wireless Headset still depends on a USB dongle sold separately to connect to most PCs . However, it now comes with an app that lets you change the headsets EQ settings, turn mic monitoring on, and get an accurate battery reading. It may not sound like a lot, but its more than just about every other gaming headset for Xbox Series X/S does.

The headset itself is also not a bad performer. It boosts bass pretty dramatically, but otherwise sounds pretty accurate, plus its got decent battery life and pretty nice microphone.

How To Pair An Xbox Headset

Its easy to forget but, when Microsoft released the Xbox One, its first controller didnt have a 3.5mm headphone jack. This meant you had to use an adapter to connect a wired headset via the controller, and you might still have to if thats the version of the controller you use.

However, more recent editions of the controller, including the newest that comes with the Xbox Series X and Series S, have that all-important jack to let you plug in more easily. Finally, you might find that some wireless controllers use a dongle to connect without cables.

Another less common way of connecting, but arguably the ideal, is through Xbox Wireless the same standard that Xboxs own first-party controllers use to connect to your console. This makes for the most solid connection, the easiest reconnecting, and has the added bonus of being guaranteed to work with the new consoles when they’re out.

In case a step-by-step guide is useful, though, follow these steps to connect your headset:

  • If your headset is wired, plug it into either the headphone jack on your Xbox controller, or the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter to get game audio.
  • If it’s wireless, plug in any dongles provided to your Xbox and turn on the headset to pair.
  • If it uses Xbox Wireless, press the pairing button on the front of your Xbox and wait for its logo to flash on and off.

The Best Xbox Series X Headsets Right Now

The Arctis 7X is one of the best wireless gaming headsets in general, so naturally itâs an elite Xbox headset. While a little pricier than many rivals, few other headsets can claim to match the Arctis 7Xâs blend of lasting comfort, excellent wireless reliability and impactful sound quality. We particularly like the elastic headband, which helps keep the headset secure and comfortable without the need to make manual adjustments.

SteelSeries includes a USB dongle, which also lets you use the Arctis 7X with other devices, like PCs or even Android phones. Itâs at its best when gaming â the black and green color scheme shows it was built for the Xbox specifically â but itâs nice to have such flexibility.

If you donât want to shell out a lot of money for the SteelSeries Arctis 7X, the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless for Xbox puts many of the same great features into a more affordable headset. Itâs essentially a version of the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless that works with the Xbox Wireless protocol, unlike the base Arctis 1 Wireless model.

Another compelling mid-range Xbox headset option, the Razer Kaira Proâs party trick is Bluetooth connectivity. This can work at the same time as the Xbox Wireless protocol, rather than it being an either/or proposition. If you want, you can listen to music from a Bluetooth-connected phone while still hearing every sound in your Xbox games.

There are a handful of key factors to consider when looking for the best cheap gaming headset for your playstyle. Here are some things to know before you buy.

Compatibility: Most of the best cheap gaming headsets connect via 3.5mm jacks, meaning they will work with just about any platform including PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. Some headsets only connect via USB for PC and PS4, though, so keep an eye out for that.

Consider your comfort: Most cheap gaming headsets have either faux leather or soft fabric earcups. The former is very comfortable and does a good job sealing sound in, but can get hot over time. Fabric cups are usually very lightweight and are better to wear for long stretches, but you won’t always get the most immersive sound.

The headsets big volume knob makes adjusting your audio on the fly a cinch, which is great if youre doing something you cant pause.

The headset handles the mix of orchestral music and hectic in-game sound of Final Fantasy XIV on PC without any issue, and everything comes through similarly clearly playing a shooter like Apex Legends. Best Xbox One Headsets (Updated 2020)

According to Microsoft, the Xbox Wireless Headset can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, but in our testing it far exceeds that. At a consistent output of ~75dB, this headset lasted 19 hours, 18 minutesnot nearly the longest life on the market, but nothing to sneeze at. However, this is one of the few gaming headsets that can transmit wired audio through its USB-C charging cable, so you keep playing as long as a USB slot is nearby, even if you have to give up the slot the Xbox Wireless adapter was taking on your PC.
