Is There A Winner In The Current Console War
Sony and Microsoft last butted heads over the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, both of which were released in November 2013 for the holiday shopping season. The Xbox One was released with a price tag of $499.99 and was marred with controversy leading up to its release. The Xbox One originally wouldn’t allow players to lend games or play used ones, and the bundled Kinect system supposedly inflated the price and could purportedly be used by Microsoft to monitor personal data and conversation.
When Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 was more user-friendly than its competitor, that appeared to seal the deal. According to a May 2020 report by Forbes, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by a margin of two to one throughout the lifespan of both machines. Sony and the PlayStation 4 were the clear winners for the previous generation of console gaming.
So where does that place the new consoles on the block? Both consoles were released in time for Holiday 2020. The PlayStation 5 costs $499.99 for the disc drive version and $399.99 for the “Digital Edition” without a disc drive. The new Xbox Series X costs $499.99. However, the Series S costs a mere $299.99.
After a year of next-gen console gaming, who’s currently in the lead in terms of sales?
Xbox Series X Price Vs Playstation 5 Price
After many leaks and speculation, Sony confirmed the PS5 Digital and PS5 prices at £360 and £450 respectively. That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced much higher than the rival Xbox Series X.
As it turns out, the full-fat PS5 and Xbox Series X cost the same, although the all-digital Series S undercuts the PS5 Digital Edition by a fair margin of £90 .
Bear in mind, however, that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive.

Playstation 5 Vs Xbox Series X
For background information on PS5, this console was created by Sony and was released in November last year. With regards to its specifications, PS5 contains an AMD CPU chip inspired on the third generation of Ryzen AMD line, per Games Radar. Through its GPU set up, the PS5 console offers 8K resolution as well as ray tracing in its games.
For those curious to know about the function of ray tracing, Tech Radar stated that it is an advanced and realistic way of providing light and shadows in a scene. TV Shows and movies also use this technique to blend and create real-life scenes. However, ray tracing takes a lot of time to render since it tracks and simulates every ray of light.
On the other hand, the Xbox Series X was produced by Microsoft. This console has eight Zen 2 CPU cores at 3.8GHz. It also caters to 4K resolution at 60FPS but is expandable up to 120FPS in certain games. Same with PS5, it also has a ray tracing.

The Best Sales Figures
While you might expect that the victor in this category would be rather clear-cut, the data is actually quite limited when it comes to sale figures.
Production of both the Xbox Series X and the PS5 has been severely disrupted and, despite the fact that these consoles are over a year old now, it’s still extremely difficult to get a hold of either of them. In fact, people have managed to make careers by tracking the availability of this next-gen hardware, because it’s just that elusive.
If you wanted to buy a PS5 right this instant, then you would have to settle for a pre-owned unit or get lucky with one of Newegg’s daily shuffle draws. That’s how uncommon restocks are to this day, and the same goes for Microsoft’s console as well.
So, to clarify, the issue with sales is entirely to do with supply and not demand. It’s impossible to tell which of the rivalling systems would be getting the most business under normal circumstances, as exacerbated shoppers are just settling for whichever one they can get their hands on.
That being said, it does appear that Sony’s is currently the more lucrative product. According to the manufacturer’s most recent quarterly report , over 13.4 million PS5 units have been shifted thus far, which is comparable to what the PS4’s numbers looked like during the equivalent stage of its rollout.
Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X Sales: Which Has Sold More Consoles To Date
Sony’s PS5 console and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X platform have always been pitted against each other since their release, and for good reason. Being the premium gaming consoles in the market, they are the most popular ones because of the power and capacity they bring, as well as the wide array of games available.
While there are several arguments on which one is better, there is one measurement that doesn’t lie: sales.

What Number Crunching Can We Do In The Meantime
Although we dont have firm figures yet, there is some interesting info in the ether regarding PS5 and Xbox Series X sales stats.
In a recent Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft said the Xbox Series X/S launch has seen More new consoles sold than any prior generation, with Xbox Series S adding the highest percentage of new players for any Xbox console at launch.
But some independent studies have shown that the PS5 is more in-demand than the Xbox in a lot of territories. So does that mean the PS5 will eventually win out in terms of sales?
Only time will tell who the victor is this generation in terms of units sold, but judging by the info were seeing, both camps could end up being pretty chuffed with their results

Industry Analyst Reveals How Many Xbox Series X
Sony recently officially confirmed how many PS5 consoles the company managed to shift, revealing in the companys Q3 earnings report that they sold a total of 4.5 million consoles.
Since falling behind the Playstation Microsoft has been more reticent about revealing their sales numbers, leaving it up to analysts to estimate the companys performance.
Previously around 3 million Xbox consoles were estimated, and today we have Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, adding their own estimate.
Take a bit over 1 million off the PS5 number and you won’t be far off.
According to Ahmad, Microsoft managed to ship around 1 million fewer Xbox consoles that Sony, suggesting around 3.5 million were sent to stores.
With both consoles in short supply, the issue has certainly not been demand, and Ahmad suggested Microsoft simply underestimated demand and started manufacturing too late.
Microsoft started manufacturing later than Sony.
That’s just one of many issues that both companies are facing in regards to component supply, logistics issues etc
Ps5 Sales Are Double Xbox Series X And S Reveals New Data
New independent data suggests that the PS5 is selling twice the number of consoles as Xbox, and that the Xbox Series S is outselling the X.
Xboxs refusal to release sales data for any of its hardware or software has been an issue for a long while now, but its long been assumed that the PlayStation 5 is outselling the Xbox Series X/S by a factor of around 2:1.
Officially, the PlayStation 5 has shipped 13.4 million consoles worldwide, while unofficially the Xbox Series X and S combined is believed to be somewhere north of 7 million.
According to analyst group Ampere Analytics those figures are broadly correct, as they quote the number of sold Xbox Series X/S consoles as 6.7 million and 12.8 million for PlayStation 5. Interestingly, they also suggest that the Xbox Series S is the biggest seller in many regions.
Although these figures seem fairly straightforward the situation is likely more complicated than it seems and one of the main reasons the PlayStation5 is selling more is not simply that its more popular but that more are being produced, compared to the Xbox Series X/S.
Similarly, the Xbox Series S has been easily available for most of the year, whereas the Xbox Series X has been just as difficult to get hold of as the PlayStation 5. So even if the Series S wasnt necessarily peoples first choice of next gen console, they may have ended up buying it if it was the only one easily available.

Opinion: Switchs Success Over Ps5 And Xbox Shows The Value Of Handhelds
Paul writes The PS5 has performed slightly better than the PS4 in the same timeframe, but the Nintendo Switchs jaw-dropping sales really highlight the value of handhelds. 2021 wasnt exactly a stellar year for new Switch games, yet somehow it managed to beat its performance in 2020, a year that also had Animal Crossing. People want convenient gaming, and between Switchs portability and Xboxs Play Anywhere between Xbox, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming along with its Game Pass-led strategy, this is an area in which Sony is struggling.
Valves Steam Deck is set to be released soon, with it looking set to show a huge audience how high-end games can reasonably be shrunk down and played on the go. Though Sony hasnt hinted that its looking to go back to the handheld space anytime soon, a dedicated handheld Vita 2 that could shrink PS5s exclusives to a small screen would fly off the shelves.
Nintendo Ds 15402 Million

- Highest-rated games: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars , Flipnote Studio , Chrono Trigger
This sales figure comes directly from Nintendo and encompasses total sales for all systems within the DS family, including the original model, DS Lite, and DSi. Nintendo DS is also the company’s best-performing system in terms of software sales, with nearly 950 million games sold.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X Sales Comparison
Despite this, we know that the Xbox Series X is still lacking behind PlayStation. The PS5 had double the sales of the Xbox Series X in Q1 2021 and there is very little to suggest anything has changed.
In fact, an industry expert believes that 8 million Xbox Series X/S consoles have been sold so far. This is impressive, but still only 60% of the total number of PS5 consoles sold so far.
The Best User Experience
Whichever machine you end up getting, you’re unlilkely to have a bad experience as they each offer a comprehensive suite of apps and useful features.
However, the Xbox does have a slight edge in this department. For a start, its mobile app is significantly more user-friendly, allowing you to download games remotely with the simple tap of a button. If you are a fan of photo modes, then all of your screenshots will be immediately uploaded to your phone as well .
In addition to this, the Xbox also has its Insider’s Hub community, which enables you to trial upcoming accessibility features and even beta test new releases. Then there’s also the fact that you can utilize cross-save with PC games, allowing you to start something like Psychonauts 2 on your computer and seamless transfer that progress over to the Xbox version.
In 2021, Microsoft also made it way easier to run emulators on the Series X than it is on the PS5. As always, it is important to note that it is illegal to download copyrighted ROM files when doing this.
The PlayStation 5 does have its own unique gimmicks of course. Most notably, Astro’s Playroom showed off the creative possibilities of the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback, but these features have hardly been touched since .
Verdict: In general, the Xbox is more intuitive when it comes to its functionality, and it lets you more comprehensively tweak your experience.

Report: Ps5 Sales Are Double That Of Xbox Series X
But Switch sales are more than double that of PS5.
Both Microsoft and Sony have had sales of their latest consoles curtailed by ongoing component shortages. However, of the two, it looks as though Sony is continuing where it left off with the last generation by selling double the number of next-gen consoles compared to its rival.
As VGC reports, the latest sales analysis carried out by Ampere Analysis reveals that during Q1 this year, Microsoft sold 1.31 million Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Sony on the other hand, more than doubled that with 2.83 million PS5 consoles sold. If accurate, it will be disappointing for Microsoft, which has placed a much bigger focus on subscription gaming for this generation, as well as having a performance advantage .
Sony won’t be completely happy, though, because it’s not topping the charts for gaming hardware sales. That crown goes to Nintendo, which sold 5.86 million Switch consoles over the same Q1 periodmore than double that of the PS5. In fact, if you add together PS5 and Xbox Sales, Nintendo still comes out on top.

Xbox Series X/s Sales Are Off To A Blisteringly Fast Start Says Microsoft’s Phil Spencer
ByAdam Vjesticalast updated 11 January 22
Sales of Xbox Series X and S have outpaced previous systems
On an episode of the New York Times podcast, Spencer revealed that the two current-gen consoles have been selling extremely well since launching in November 2020.
At this point, weve sold more of this generation of Xboxes, which is Xbox Series X and S, than we had any previous version of Xboxes, Spencer said. That means the Xbox Series X and S are beating the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in terms of sales over the same post-launch period.
Naturally, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have a long way to go if theyre to surpass each of the previous consoles’ to-date sales. The Xbox 360 topped 85 million units, while the Xbox One has sold over 50 million units since its release in 2013. Still, its encouraging news for Microsoft that its latest systems are off to a fast start.
The achievement is all the more impressive considering that supply issues continue to plague the Xbox Series X in particular. Demand for Microsofts flagship console remains extremely high, with stock tending to sell out as quickly as it appears.
Support On Other Platforms
Drivers were released in June 2014 to allow Xbox One controllers to be used over a USB connection on PCs running Windows 7 or later. The Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows is a USB dongle that allows up to eight controllers to be used at once wirelessly.
On Windows 10, support for the controller is built-in, including support for wireless audio when using the wireless dongle or USB cable . The controller is also manageable via the Xbox Accessories app, whose features include button remapping , input tests, and firmware update. On Windows 7 or 8.1, drivers are required, and the aforementioned features are not available.
On Linux, Xbox One controllers are supported by the xpad USB driver. There also exists an alternative xpadneo driver, which supports some controller revisions that are not supported by the xpad driver, as well as additional features. Some of these additional features, such as driver support for the trigger rumble motors, aren’t even supported on Windows 10.
