Ea Reveals How Many Xbox One Consoles Have Actually Been Sold
10 May 18
When it comes to the console install base for the big three platforms, coming by some of the numbers can be difficult. Nintendo has been forthcoming about the Switch due to its current market momentum, and Sony hasn’t shied away from the numbers. However, Microsoft has been coy about the Xbox One’s install base, but we may have just figured out how well the console has actually been selling.
During an Electronic Arts earnings call , it was revealed by EA’s chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen, that Microsoft sold about 30 million units by the end of 2017, even with the addition of the Xbox One X added to the mix. This is compared to the 73 million home consoles that Sony had moved from launch up until the end of 2017.
Variety notes that Microsoft contacted them to clarify that the numbers they calculated were inaccurate, but didn’t venture to say in what way the numbers were inaccurate.
Variety came to the 30 million figure by subtracting from the total install base numbers that Jorgensen mentioned during the earnings call, where he revealed that at the end of 2017 the PS4 and Xbox One had cumulatively reached 103 million as an install base. Given that Sony outed that the PS4 had moved 73.6 million consoles by the end of December 31st, 2017, it wasn’t hard to round off the rest for the Xbox One, putting it at an estimated 30 million.
A Big Day For Microsoft And The Xbox Series X
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad stated that the Xbox One sold more than 1 million consoles in the first 24 hours, which means that the Xbox Series X|S has already surpassed the Xbox One in sales. However, Microsoft has not shared any hard sales data so the exact number is unknown.
Spencer reaffirmed that they will not likely be sharing sales figures any time soon. I can promise you that I wont do that, Spencer said in an interview with The Guardian. In the last year weve had Google and Amazon and now Facebook announcing theyre coming into our gaming space. Im not gonna go compete with their numbers based on how many Xbox Series X Ive sold. is never gonna talk about how many Chromecast Pros they sold. Theyre gonna talk about how many players they have.
In a blog post on Xbox Wire, Microsoft stated that not only were more consoles sold than previous generations but also had the highest percentage of new players thanks to the Xbox Series S. Interestingly, thanks to the large catalog of games available on Game Pass, users played 3,594 different games across all Microsoft console generations.
For the time being, Spencer and Microsoft are focusing on games and the communities around it. Great time for gaming right now console launches, great games, the industry doing well. And Gaming continues to play important social role as people are staying safe. Thank you your love of gaming and support, its inspiring.

Japan Has Bought 23 Million Xbox Consoles In The Last 20 Years New Report Reveals
The vast majority of these were Xbox 360 sales
Around 2.3 million Xbox consoles have been sold in Japan across all generations since the original console came to the country 20 years ago.
Thats according to a new report in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of Xbox in Japan.
According to the report, a total of 2,345,975 Xbox consoles have been sold in Japan as of February 6, 2022.
The vast majority of these were Xbox 360 sales, of which there were 1,616,128.
In context, Xbox console sales are tiny compared to the other platforms in the Japanese market .
However, given Xboxs historically poor market performance in Japan, Series X|S are off to a more positive start in a country where Xbox has typically struggled.
The total sales for each console in Japan are:
- Xbox 472,992
- Xbox One 114,831
- Xbox Series X/S 142,024
The article also reveals that the best-selling Xbox game in history in Japan is Dead or Alive 3 on the original Xbox, which sold 271,149 copies. This meant 46% of Xbox owners in Japan owned a copy of Dead or Alive 3.

Xbox’s Phil Spencer: ‘we’re Not Driven By How Many Consoles We Sell’
As the Xbox Series X and Series S are released, Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer says the next games generation is all about how many players you have, not how many consoles you shift
The launch of the Xbox Series X this week marked the start of a new video game console generation historically a super-exciting time for players, as better technology unlocks new dimensions for games. But despite the usual competitive crowing about teraflops, frame rates and resolutions, theres a different dimension to the console wars this time around. The looming Netflix-ification of video games threatens to upend the whole idea of video game consoles. Amazon and Google are both working on game streaming services that let people play cutting-edge games without paying for a box that sits under the TV. And Microsoft has spent the past five years spending billions on game developers to shore up its star service: Xbox Game Pass, a monthly subscription that lets you play hundreds of games for a monthly fee.
Game Pass and cloud gaming are Xboxs focus now, he says, but not to the exclusion of consoles at least, not yet. Hopefully, our focus supports all the models that are currently out there, from retail to free-to-play to subscriptions, he says. I think that diversity of business model is one of the key differences between what were trying to do and what happened in music, where everything shifted all at once.
The Bestselling Consoles Of All Time
The video game industry is a lucrative business, with some home consoles selling tens of millions of units worldwide. How well each console sold is a great measure of what went right during that particular generation. Its an effective way to gauge a specific manufacturers success, while seeing what gamers gravitated toward and whether a console has gimmicky features or ideas that stick around.
Before getting into the bestselling consoles, its important to note that this list does not include dedicated handhelds. These figures do not account for used system sales since manufacturers dont have a way to track those transactions .
These systems are also home to some of the bestselling games of all time, which you can check out here.

Microsoft Says More Japanese Indies Have Xbox Dev Kits Than Ever Before
Ive talked for a long time about our desire to have more of a first-party presence in Japan, Spencer said at the time.
This is a great step there. Thinking about the map of where these teams are, and talking about all the games theyre working on I cant wait to speak to the Tango team and get to know them.
Sony Own 84% Of The Market V Microsoft
Across the world, figures reveal that Sonys Playstation is by far the most popular gaming console. Having released their first model back in December 1994, theyve gone on to claim a staggering 84% of the gaming market, proving once and for all that – in gamers eyes – theyre superior to anything Microsoft can throw at them. Playstation gets 148/161 of the countries votes vs Xbox’s 13 countries.

Nintendo Game Boy/game Boy Color
Nintendos second leap into handheld consoles, the Game Boy was released in 1989, 9 years after Nintendos first handheld console, Game and Watch.
The Game Boy would become a massive hit selling over 118.69 million units. The Game Boy would be the forefather for the rest of Nintendos handheld consoles including the Game Boy Advance, the DS, and the 3DS.
The Game Boy had an incredible line-up of games that are still cherished to this day. Super Mario Land, Pokemon Red and Blue, Kirbys Dream Land, and The Legend of Zelda were all incredible games/franchises that were featured on the Game Boy.
Nintendo Ds 15402 Million
- Initial release date: November 21, 2004
- Production status: Ended
- Highest-rated games: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars , Flipnote Studio , Chrono Trigger
This sales figure comes directly from Nintendo and encompasses total sales for all systems within the DS family, including the original model, DS Lite, and DSi. Nintendo DS is also the company’s best-performing system in terms of software sales, with nearly 950 million games sold.

Has Xbox Sold More Than Ps5
Its also more difficult to tell how sales can prove that Xbox is the winner here, because of GamePass.
Having the service available on PC, or through the cloud on mobile devices, can skew this, and it makes one wonder whether its the reason why Phil Spencer finds it more irrelevant now.
In 2013, 3.08 million Xbox one consoles were sold, which may be a help in guessing as to what the Series S/X consoles could sell by the end of this year.
We will most likely gain a better idea of firm figures in the new year, but for now anyway, as long as theres good availability of stock for either console, both companies are going to be content with the sales figures.

Snes/super Famicom 4910 Million
- Initial release date: November 21, 1990
- Production status: Ended
- Highest-rated games: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island , Chrono Trigger , Super Metroid
This sales figure comes directly from Nintendo. While the SNES fell short of its predecessor in terms of sales, the console is remembered fondly for its expansive library of high-quality games, including those listed above. 379 million units of software were sold for the system. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System — or Super Famicom as it’s known in Japan — often tops “best console” lists thanks to its massive third-party support and iconic single- and multiplayer games.

Playstation 3 86 Million
As with the Xbox One, the PS3 got off to a rocky start. Telling your audience to get a second job to afford a $600 machine was most definitely not the way to go, but Sony managed to turn things around to outsell the Xbox 360. The PS3 had fantastic ideas, but once again, games are what resonated with its audience. At its peak, the console was pushing indie titles like Journey, Hotline Miami, and Guacamelee!, and its AAA experiences like the Uncharted trilogy, Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, and The Last of Us gave its audience a reason to buy the console. While it had its shortcomings, the PS3 is an important benchmark in video game history.
Xbox Series X/s Sold Over 1 Million Units On Launch Day Alone
The Xbox Series X/S have already sold over a million units worldwide, with the systems having the biggest console launch yet for Microsoft.
The Xbox Series S/X sold over a million units on launch day alone, contributing to it having the biggest Xbox launch of all time. There were a lot of rumors and speculation throughout 2020 about possible delays for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but both managed to launch on time.
There are some caveats to the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X launch situation. For one thing, it’s still practically impossible to buy a system without resorting to scalpers. Any influx of new consoles is instantly gobbled up, as was the case when Walmart’s website crashed on the PS5 launch day. Even the people who secured a pre-order on launch day aren’t guaranteed to get a system on time, as there have been numerous shipping delays for both systems. The people who pre-ordered an Xbox Series X on Amazon might have to wait until the end of December for their system to arrive, sadly.
The numerous issues with the launch of the Xbox Series S/X have done little to diminish the enthusiasm for the system. According to VGChartz, the Xbox Series S/X sold between 1.2 million and 1.4 million on launch day. The United States of America was the biggest market for the systems, with Europe just behind it.

The Economics Behind Video
The previous generation of consoles had three main contenders: Sony Corp. PS3, Microsoft Inc. Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. The Nintendo Wii was designed more for recreational gaming than for hardcore gaming, but in past years it has at times outsold the other consoles. The current generation of gaming consoles is the eighth generation of consoles. The seventh generation consoles played out their life cycle and have been in the market long enough to analyze their strategies and business models. Sonys competence lies in its hardware capabilities, given its long history of expertise in the storage industry, whereas Microsofts competence lies in software, given its dominance in computer operating software.
One reason why companies sell the consoles at a loss initially is to lure customers into buying them and then try to make up for the losses through each game sold, as well as online subscriptions. Also, as more and more units are manufactured, the costs eventually decrease due to economies of scale.
