PlayStation 5 is another massive success for Sony, selling 13.4 million consoles since it was released in November 2020, according to the company. Despite persistent shortage issues, PS5 is matching the first-year sales pace of PS4, which has gone on to sell over 100 million units and counting.

Xbox Series X And S Are Microsoft’s Fastest

Xbox Series X and S are the fastest selling Xbox consoles ever, Microsoft has revealed.

During Microsoft’s fourth quarter earnings call today, CEO Satya Nadella reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Xbox’s ever-growing presence in the gaming space, saying, “We’re all-in on games.” Despite a supply shortage that’s made it pretty dang hard to buy an Xbox Series X since the console launched last November, Microsoft says its next-gen hardware is still its fastest-selling box yet.

“Millions have already streamed games to their desktops, tablets, and phones, and the Xbox Series S and X are our fastest-selling consoles ever with more consoles sold life-to-date than any previous generation,” Nadella said, adding that Game Pass is also growing rapidly.

Again, it’s a tough pill to swallow if you’ve been desperately tracking each and every Xbox Series X restock but still haven’t been able to put in an order. Regardless, Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad estimates total sales for Xbox Series X and S had reached 6.5 million as of June 30 – a sizable bump from Xbox One’s 5.7 million and Xbox 360’s 5 million in the same timeframe.

We estimate that the Xbox Series X|S total sell in was 6.5m as of June 30, 2021.Compared to our estimate of 5.7m for Xbox One and 5.0m for Xbox 360 in the same timeframe. Supply for Series X|S improved in the past quarter, with hardware revenue up 20% QoQ. https://t.co/ypHqyTqZzo

Japan Has Bought 23 Million Xbox Consoles In The Last 20 Years New Report Reveals

The vast majority of these were Xbox 360 sales

Chris Scullion

Around 2.3 million Xbox consoles have been sold in Japan across all generations since the original console came to the country 20 years ago.

Thats according to a new report in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of Xbox in Japan.

According to the report, a total of 2,345,975 Xbox consoles have been sold in Japan as of February 6, 2022.

The vast majority of these were Xbox 360 sales, of which there were 1,616,128.

The report also confirms that the Xbox Series X/S has already overtaken the Xbox Ones lifetime total sales in the country.

In context, Xbox console sales are tiny compared to the other platforms in the Japanese market .

However, given Xboxs historically poor market performance in Japan, Series X|S are off to a more positive start in a country where Xbox has typically struggled.

The total sales for each console in Japan are:

  • Xbox 472,992
  • Xbox One 114,831
  • Xbox Series X/S 142,024

The article also reveals that the best-selling Xbox game in history in Japan is Dead or Alive 3 on the original Xbox, which sold 271,149 copies. This meant 46% of Xbox owners in Japan owned a copy of Dead or Alive 3.

The best-selling Xbox games in Japan in the last 20 years were:

  • Dead or Alive 3 271,149
  • Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope 208,521
  • Tales of Vesperia 204,305
  • Blue Dragon 203,740
  • The Last Remnant 154,493

Sony stopped reporting sales figures for Vita fairly early on in its lifecycle, though estimates from news outlets and industry analysts put the total somewhere between 10 and 15 million. Gamesindustry.biz reported Vita sold south of” 15 million units, yet ended its run marginally ahead of Wii U, leading us to our rough estimate of 14 million.

Ea Reveals How Many Xbox One Consoles Have Actually Been Sold

    10 May 18

When it comes to the console install base for the big three platforms, coming by some of the numbers can be difficult. Nintendo has been forthcoming about the Switch due to its current market momentum, and Sony hasn’t shied away from the numbers. However, Microsoft has been coy about the Xbox One’s install base, but we may have just figured out how well the console has actually been selling.

During an Electronic Arts earnings call , it was revealed by EA’s chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen, that Microsoft sold about 30 million units by the end of 2017, even with the addition of the Xbox One X added to the mix. This is compared to the 73 million home consoles that Sony had moved from launch up until the end of 2017.

Variety notes that Microsoft contacted them to clarify that the numbers they calculated were inaccurate, but didn’t venture to say in what way the numbers were inaccurate.

Variety came to the 30 million figure by subtracting from the total install base numbers that Jorgensen mentioned during the earnings call, where he revealed that at the end of 2017 the PS4 and Xbox One had cumulatively reached 103 million as an install base. Given that Sony outed that the PS4 had moved 73.6 million consoles by the end of December 31st, 2017, it wasn’t hard to round off the rest for the Xbox One, putting it at an estimated 30 million.

Over The Last 20 Years Microsoft Has Never Made A Profit Selling An Xbox Console

It’s a well-known fact that when a new games console launches it’s typically sold at a loss. With hardware revisions and mass production ramping up, the costs fall and the console should eventually becomes profitable. However, that’s never happened for an Xbox console according to Microsoft.

As Protocol reports, Xbox business development vice president Lori Wright is a third-party witness in the Epic vs. Apple trial. Epic’s lawyer Wes Earnhardt asked Wright “How much margin does Microsoft earn” when selling Xbox consoles, to which Wright responded, “We don’t. We sell the consoles at a loss.”

As VGC points out, Wright was also asked if there’s ever been a profit generated from an Xbox console sale, which she confirmed has never happened. To put that in context, Microsoft has been selling Xbox consoles for nearly 20 years now, including the original Xbox, the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and now the Xbox Series X and Series S. In all that time, every single console sale cost Microsoft money.

The reason games consoles end up being profitable is through a combination of software, service, and accessory sales, but it’s still surprising to find Microsoft has never achieved hardware profitability. Analyst

Microsoft Will Not Disclose Xbox Series X Console Sales Figures

Microsoft has no plans to publicly confirm how many console units of Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S are sold worldwide. Microsoft will stick to that decision even if its next-generation console lineup leaves PlayStation 5 in the dust.

Speaking with The Guardian in a recent interview, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, stated that Microsoft will only publicly confirm the number of monthly players on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as well as Xbox-related services such as Xbox Game Pass when going forward.

The primary outcome of all the work that we do is how many players we see, and how often they play, said Spencer. If I start to highlight something else, both publicly and internally, it changes our focus. Things that lack backwards compatibility become less interesting. Putting our games on PC becomes a reason that somebody doesnt have to go and buy an Xbox Series X.

Ill hold fast to this. We publicly disclose player numbers. Thats the thing I want us to be driven by, not how many individual pieces of plastic did we sell.

Microsoft stopped sharing console sales figures for Xbox One fairly early in the last console generation. From around 2016 forward the only insight into how many console units were sold were obtained through third-party sources. Even today Microsoft has not offered any substantial breakdown in regard to Xbox One and Xbox One X sales numbers.

    Xbox Facts And History

Here are some interesting data and facts regarding the history of the Xbox.

    7. The idea of creating the Xbox began in 1998.

According to original Xbox facts, four gentlemen – Kevin Bachus, Ted Hase, Otto Berkes, and Seamus Blackley – came up with the idea of creating Microsofts first console game.

The four pitched the idea to Bill Gates, and thankfully he accepted their proposal. And here we are today.

    8. It took Microsoft just 20 months to launch the Xbox.

Imagine the process of launching a product. You think of years and years of feasibility studies, conceptualization, design, all the way to implementation and launch.

    Well, not for Microsoft.

Everything from start to finish took under two years. Xbox game stats show that during the very first season after creation, the company sold 1.5 million units.

    9. The first season following Xboxs launch earned Microsoft $750 million.

The Xbox was such a hit with game players during its early days. Xbox facts and statistics show that by the fourth year, the company had already sold 21 million units!

    10. Microsoft only sold 123,000 units the first week after release in Japan.

The reception of the Xbox in Japan wasnt as great as it was in the US.

To turn things around, the company slashed the prices in half. And it worked! More and more people from the region started purchasing the units.

It might be surprising, but despite losing the current generation, Microsoft has still done well with the Xbox One. Even after getting off to such a rough start following the systems reveal in 2013, the Xbox One was able to turn things around, thanks to its many consumer-friendly features like Xbox Game Pass, Play Anywhere, and Games with Gold. Microsoft has not publicly announced the systems exact sales figures, but an estimated 46 million have been sold since its release seven years ago.

With all this talk about the coming race between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I thought it might be time to take a look back and remember what happened this past generation in the console race, and how that might inform the future.

Microsoft, to its credit, has done a great job promoting the Xbox Series X so far with its tremendous horsepower and attractive ideas like buying a last-gen game and getting a next-gen upgrade for free. Sony, meanwhile, has been far more secretive about the PS5, and Microsoft is clearly hoping that they will be able to level the playing field this upcoming generation.

But they have a lot of ground to make up.

While most people may realize that the PS4 won this console generation, I dont think many realize just by what kind of margin.

While these numbers are difficult to parse because Microsoft stopped releasing Xbox unit sales, we have solid estimates from many third parties or other game developers like EA. As it stands, we are about to wrap up the console race with the following totals:

    PS4 : 108.9 million

    Nintendo Switch : 52.48 million

    Sega Genesis/mega Drive 35 Million*

    • Initial release date: October 29, 1988
    • Production status: Ended
    • Highest-rated games: Ristar , Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , Shining Force 2

*The sales total of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a topic of much debate among game historians. The actual figure is impossible to lock down given the lack of concrete data, but estimates generally range from 30 to 40 million units. Aforementioned Sega executive Joe Miller once said system sales were over 40 million, though that number is highly contested and seemingly contradicted by Segas available sales data. Compilations of that data from internet researchers and professional research firms show first-party console sales hit somewhere between 28 and 31 million units.

Add in estimated third-party console sales from companies such as TecToy in Brazil and Majesco in North America, and we arrive at our ballpark figure of 35 million a number seemingly corroborated by a 2017 press release from Sega partner AtGames.
