This sales figure comes directly from Nintendo. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System — or Super Famicom as it’s known in Japan — often tops “best console” lists thanks to its massive third-party support and iconic single- and multiplayer games.

Xbox Series X/s Recent Sales Estimates

Microsoft made a pretty bold bet this generation by offering two console tiers, with the Xbox Series X being the definitive place to enjoy next-gen games while the Xbox Series S is aimed at casual gamers or those who are on a tight budget. Of course, both come with their own advantages and disadvantages – but Microsofts efforts towards catering to a much wider audience than before have been successful.

This sentiment is reflected in sales figures for the consoles. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has already said in a recent interview that Xbox Series X/S has been the best-selling consoles in the companys history. The fact that these consoles have been outselling the Xbox 360 is intriguing. This alone would put the consoles well above the 8 million mark, which is still respectable enough when compared against PS5s 13 million+ sales mark. However, Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners has estimated that Xbox Series X/S has sold over 12 million units. If these estimates are to be believed, Microsoft isnt as far behind Sony which changes a lot of things for both parties.

Ps5 Sales Almost Twice As Strong As Xbox Series X According To Analyst

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X hardware released at the tail-end of 2020, kicking off the latest console era. While the two systems remain difficult to obtain, both of them have sold quite a few units over the last 15 months. Official sales numbers for the Xbox Series X platform have not been released, but Sony revealed that the PS5 shipped 17.3 million units in 2021. Ampere research director Piers Harding-Rolls estimates that 17.1 million of those units have been sold, and that the number is quite a bit better than the combined total for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

“Microsoft ended 2021 with its Xbox Series family of devices reaching cumulative sell-through of 10.3 million units,” Harding-Rolls estimated. “This is on a par with the previous generation Xbox One cycle.”

Harding-Rolls believes that Xbox Series S sales made up a larger portion of that 10.3 million units due to “unprecedented adoption of this digital-only device.” The Xbox Series S seemed to be easier to come by throughout 2021, and Harding-Rolls attributes the popularity of Xbox Game Pass as part of the console’s success.

“At this early stage the global sales momentum is with Sony, but it will be frustrated that its potential has been undermined by product availability,” said Harding-Rolls.

    Second Generation: Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.

The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 which uses an advanced sensor system.

The second major revision of the Xbox 360 was the Xbox 360 E, released in 2013. It featured a case style similar to the upcoming Xbox One, and eliminated one USB port and the S/PDIF, YPbPr component and S-video connections, but otherwise shared the same specifications as the Xbox 360 S.

Unlike the eighth generation of consoles, where Sony dominated the console market with the PS4 thanks to an excellent library of first-party titles, the competition seems to be much more neck to neck from the onset. Microsoft has learned a lot from its past missteps with the Xbox One and made a lot of right moves at the tail-end of the last generation, which have started paying off big time for the Redmond-based giant.

The biggest and most successful of these bets is Xbox Game Pass, which gives subscribers access to an extensive library of games at one monthly cost. In addition to a ton of high-profile third-party releases on the platforms, Xbox Game Pass also provides access to the entirety of Xboxs first-party games on day one of their release.

This combined with the slew of acquisitions that Microsoft has completed in the last couple of years has made the subscription service one of the more enchanting parts of being in an ecosystem. The sheer value proposition of Xbox Game Pass also makes the $300 entry point with Xbox Series S a lot more attractive, which in turn makes a strong case for fans on a budget to go the Xbox route this time around all while being sure of receiving compelling exclusives throughout the generation.

    Sega Genesis/mega Drive 35 Million*

    • Initial release date: October 29, 1988
    • Production status: Ended
    • Highest-rated games: Ristar , Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , Shining Force 2

*The sales total of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a topic of much debate among game historians. The actual figure is impossible to lock down given the lack of concrete data, but estimates generally range from 30 to 40 million units. Aforementioned Sega executive Joe Miller once said system sales were over 40 million, though that number is highly contested and seemingly contradicted by Segas available sales data. Compilations of that data from internet researchers and professional research firms show first-party console sales hit somewhere between 28 and 31 million units.

Add in estimated third-party console sales from companies such as TecToy in Brazil and Majesco in North America, and we arrive at our ballpark figure of 35 million a number seemingly corroborated by a 2017 press release from Sega partner AtGames.

New Report From Famitsu Notes Milestone A Majority Of That Figure Are Xbox 360 Units

    Xbox Series X Pre

A new report has shared that Microsoft has sold around 2.3 million Xbox consoles in Japan since the original console arrived in the country.

The figure comes from Weekly Famitsu magazine, which marked the 20th anniversary of the console’s Japanese launch, as spotted by VGC.

Of that total, 1.6 million were Xbox 360 sales, the firm’s most popular console by a significant margin.

The consoles sales for each generation as are follows:

    • Xbox – 474,992 units
    • Xbox One – 114,831 units
    • Xbox Series X/S – 142, 024 units

The report also unveils the best-selling titles in Japan. Dead or Alive 3 for the original Xbox came out on top with over 271k sales, followed by the 360’s Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope with around 205.5k sales.

The top 5 best-selling titles are as follows:

  • Dead or Alive 3 – 271,149
  • Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope – 208,521
  • Tales of Vesperia – 204,305
  • Blue Dragon – 203,740
  • The Last Remnant – 154,493
  • Ahead of the release of the Series X/S, Xbox boss Phil Spencer stressed the importance of a global launch, and said prior to the console’s release that the firm intends to do “a much better job” reaching players in Japan.

For the first time in the console’s history, Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X/S in Japan on the same day as the console’s western launch. It also launched Xbox Cloud Gaming in the country back in September.

    Nintendo Switch 9287 Million

As of June 30, 2021, Switch had surpassed the sales totals of both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with over 89 million units sold, according to Nintendo. That number grew to just under 93 million by the end of September. Over 630 million software units have been sold for Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the console’s best-selling game, with over 38 million copies sold. The Switch attempts to combine the console and handheld business lines Nintendo formerly supported with separate hardware and software.

    Is Microsoft Discontinuing Xbox One

Microsoft has announced that the company has stopped manufacturing its last-generation Xbox One gaming consoles. The company also pulled a similar move ahead of the Xbox Series X launch in 2020 by discontinuing the Xbox One X and Digital Xbox One S, also stopping the production of the Xbox One S by the end of the year.

A Big Day For Microsoft And The Xbox Series X

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad stated that the Xbox One sold more than 1 million consoles in the first 24 hours, which means that the Xbox Series X|S has already surpassed the Xbox One in sales. However, Microsoft has not shared any hard sales data so the exact number is unknown.

Spencer reaffirmed that they will not likely be sharing sales figures any time soon. I can promise you that I wont do that, Spencer said in an interview with The Guardian. In the last year weve had Google and Amazon and now Facebook announcing theyre coming into our gaming space. Im not gonna go compete with their numbers based on how many Xbox Series X Ive sold. is never gonna talk about how many Chromecast Pros they sold. Theyre gonna talk about how many players they have.

In a blog post on Xbox Wire, Microsoft stated that not only were more consoles sold than previous generations but also had the highest percentage of new players thanks to the Xbox Series S. Interestingly, thanks to the large catalog of games available on Game Pass, users played 3,594 different games across all Microsoft console generations.

For the time being, Spencer and Microsoft are focusing on games and the communities around it. Great time for gaming right now console launches, great games, the industry doing well. And Gaming continues to play important social role as people are staying safe. Thank you your love of gaming and support, its inspiring.
