You can get the former for as little as 250$ or 350$ if you want the extra storage capacity, putting it on even terms with the competing PlayStation 4 Slim and making it quite affordable.

The Xbox One X, on the other hand, is the most expensive console of this generation, sitting at a hefty 500$, which is 100$ more than the PlayStation 4 Pro, which also delivers a solid 4K gaming experience. However, the higher price tag is justified as the Xbox One X has more powerful hardware and the fact that it comes with a 4K Blu-Ray player.

Of the two last-gen consoles, only the Xbox One X comes somewhat close to holding its own against the Xbox Series S though nowhere close to the Xbox Series X. The Xbox One X has 12GB of memory versus 10GB with the Series S, plus 6 teraflops of graphics versus 4 teraflops with the Series S. They both have eight CPU cores, and the One X has a terabyte of storage versus 512GB on the Series S. Plus, the Series S is stuck at 1440p for gaming, while the One X offers 4K gaming if you own a 4K TV. While the Series S does support 4K streaming, it lacks an optical drive, meaning only the Xbox One X can double as a 4K UHD player.

Overall, however, the Series S is still a superior piece of machinery. Even if its smaller in pure gigabytes, its solid-state drive drastically reduces loading times versus the One Xs hard drive. Its eight cores hit 3.6GHz instead of a mere 2.3GHz. Even with fewer teraflops, the Series S supports effects like ray tracing and dynamic lighting that the Xbox One X cannot. Most importantly, the Series S consistently hits 60 fps and can rise as high as 120 for some games, while the One X may hit 4K but is stuck at 30 fps in that mode.

What About Xbox One S Storage

Microsofts next-gen Xbox One X will come stock with a blazing-fast 1TB NVMe solid-state drive, with the ability to double that via a proprietary expansion slot that will bump up the total system price. The Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X will essentially serve as a sort of a virtual memory, Microsoft has said, cutting load times dramatically. There will also be USB 3.2 interface for more conventional external hard drives, according to Eurogamer.

We absolutely dont know, however, if the Xbox One S will include any of these improvements, though it will apparently include a 512GB SSD. The Microsoft commercial referred to above, however, seems to imply that there will just be an SSD and no external storage interface.

Xbox One X Vs Ps4 Pro: Hardware

For a console that packs power, the Xbox One X is nice and compact, at 11.8 x 9.4 x 2.3 inches. However, its a weighty 8.4 pounds. Microsoft calls it the smallest Xbox ever, but it’s only the slimmest the existing Xbox One S is 11.6 x 9.1 x 2.5 inches, so it’s smaller in other dimensions. The new Xbox comes only in matte black , and it looks pretty bland. It’s just two stacked, rectangular boxes. It’s not ugly by any means, but it’s not any sort of radical new approach to Xbox, either.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is larger all around, at 15.6 x 11.6 x 2.6 inches, but lighter, at 7 pounds. Its a stack of three pieces of black plastic , which is modern and visually appealing but on the bulky side.

Winner: Xbox One X. It may not be much of a redesign, and it’s quite heavy. But you can’t argue with fitting a bunch of power into a compact space.

We’ve known for a while that the Xbox Series X would have 12 Teraflops of power. Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter analysed a possible GPU specs leak back in December and this leak was then by a teaser image from Phil Spencer, Xbox boss, which allowed for further analysis.

We now how Microsoft has given the Xbox Series X it’s 12 Teraflops and it’s all thanks to the Project Scarlett SoC – system on chip.

As Rich Leadbetter explains in his analysis of the Xbox Series X specs,”The chip itself is a 360mm2 slice of silicon , that pairs customised versions of AMD’s Zen 2 CPU core with 12.155 teraflops of GPU compute power.”

Microsoft came clean about its next-generation game console, the Xbox Series X, last March. Or they least revealed details about its internal components. Now, Microsoft’s cheaper console, the Xbox Series S, is back in the spotlight.

That Microsoft should have a second version of the Xbox Series X is no surprise Microsoft released an Xbox One S, and on Tuesday Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox Series S is real, and priced at $299. News of the cheaper console has been slowly leaking out, so lets talk about what we know, what we dont, and whats likely.

How Does The New Rig Stack Up

Reports from Microsoft state that the GPU in the new Xbox Series X is capable of delivering 12 teraflops, based on AMDs new RDNA 2.0 technology. Interesting to note is that the release talks about only the GPU performance. Over the last few decades, GPUs have come to exceed the raw processing power of CPUs, and thus this is the focus of the comparison.

For a consumer device that lives under a television, this is a monumental figure. In its time, Playstation 3 represented a huge advance in the amount of processing power tucked inside an affordable game console. Back then, the raw grunt of the PS3, combined with its ability to run Linux, led to a series of supercomputing clusters around the world. The biggest of these, the Condor Cluster, employed 1760 consoles, and was employed by the US Air Force for surveillance tasks. Capable of 500 teraflops, similar performance today could likely be gained with well under 100 Series X consoles. Unfortunately, Microsoft have announced no plans to allow users to run custom operating systems on the platform.

Comparing the Series X to contemporary computer hardware, performance is on par with NVIDIAs current flagship GPU, the GeForce RTX 2080 TI, which delivers 13.45 teraflops with 32-bit floating point math. Given the capability to run dual-GPU systems on the PC platform, and the fact that the new Xbox wont be released until later this year, PCs will retain the performance lead, as expected.

Xbox One X Vs Xbox Series S Specs

As mentioned earlier, the Xbox One X and Xbox Series S comes from two different console generations. The former is the high-end Xbox console of the current generation, while the latter is the low-end next-generation Xbox console. In terms of CPU power, the Xbox Series S and the Xbox One X are similarly powerful. The Series S sports an 8-Core AMD Zen 2 CPU at 3.6 GHz. In comparison, the Xbox One X also features an 8-Core Custom AMD but only at 2.3 GHz. Storage wise the Xbox One X features a 1TB HDD, while the Series One S has a 512 GB expandable SSD. It is worth noting that while the Series One S will hold fewer games than the Xbox One X out of the box, the SSD means that the new-generation console will load games much faster than the Xbox One X despite its lower storage capacity.

Although the Series S wins slightly in terms of power and performance, the same cannot be said with its GPU power. Given that the Series S is marketed to be a low-end console, Microsoft did not really push its graphical capabilities, given that they are targeting the Series S to those who are not planning to run the console using a 4K TV or monitor. As revealed by Microsoft, the Xbox Series S will have 4 teraflops of GPU Power, which pales in comparison to its high-end counterpart with 12.15 teraflops.

How Much Difference Do 18 Teraflops Make

Calculating how much the 1.8 teraflop difference between the new consoles has on outright performance isn’t as easy as it sounds. There are numerous other factors in play when it comes to outright performance comparisons between the consoles.

For example, the PlayStation 5 custom SSD is capable of up to 5.5GB/s raw output and 8-9GB/s compressed output. In comparison, the Xbox Series X custom NVMe SSD outputs 2.4GB/s of raw and 4.8GB/s of compressed data.

The much faster drive allows the PS5 to work almost without load screens. Certainly, it enables it to load in-game features almost twice as fast as the Xbox Series X. Even though the Xbox Series X has more teraflops, the PlayStation 5’s storage performance provides a different measurement angle.

Not only that, but loading time is a very visible measurement for gamers. You probably remember the horrendously long load times of games like Fallout 4, Bloodborne, and Grand Theft Auto 5. Staring at a loading screen is no fun, even if developers include tips, facts, and so on.

Gamers will absolutely remember the PlayStation 5 booting them into Miles Morales New York City in the blink of an eye, more so than they’ll ever think about that 1.8 teraflop difference.

Xbox One S Is More Powerful Than The Regular Xbox One

During its E3 2016 show yesterday, Microsoft revealed the slim Xbox One, model S, to the world. The new console is 40 percent smaller than the original Xbox One, and has an internal power supply.

Although Microsoft confirmed the console supports 4K media playback and boasts a UHD Blu-ray player, no one expected it to actually play regular Xbox One games better. Head of The Coalition, Rod Fergusson, Gears of War 4 developers told Polygon the game will actually benefit from some of the increased power.

This additional power, according to Fergusson, comes in the form of increased GPU and CPU “raw” power.

Gears of War 4 dynamically scales the resolution in both single-player and multiplayer, to maintain the frame-rate targets for each. According to Fergusson, the team was able to utilise the extra power in the Xbox One S to reduce the frequency of frame-rate and resolution penalties in demanding spots.

The Xbox One S’ high dynamic range also helps with some visuals improvements like surface detail on metal and armour, thanks to the wider colour range.

Microsoft did not mention the One S having more power, even if it’s not a huge increase in the grand scheme of things. It is, however, an interesting fact consumers should be aware of.

Gears of War 4 is out October 11 on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.

What Is A Teraflop

Right, before we talk about how many teraflops the Xbox Series S has, how about we talk about what a teraflop actually is.

Well, in essence, a teraflop is a measurement of a computers performance. The tera part basically means one million, and a FLOP is actually an acronym that stands for Floating-Point Operations per second.

That means that a single teraflop is the ability to compute one billion floating-point operations per second, which is a frankly absurd number that were not really able to wrap our heads around fully as human beings.

Basically, more teraflops means more processing power, and that, in turn, means better performance in our games, more complicated games, and just a generally better experience.
