When you’re faced with two equally amazing choices, it can seem difficult to pit the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S against each other. However, there are some key differences between the two consoles that can make all the difference depending on what you’re looking for, especially for playing games at 120 FPS.
The biggest difference between the consoles is simply price. The flagship Xbox Series X retails for $500, while the smaller Xbox Series S retails for a much more palatable $300. Both consoles are impressively performant as next-gen consoles, but that $200 price discrepancy brings with it some crucial compromises in the Xbox Series S.
The Xbox Series X is the ultimate next-gen gaming console, right alongside the sleek PS5, and boasts the full suite of advanced next-gen gaming features like powerful hardware, a lightning-fast SSD, real-time ray-tracing support, and so much more. It also has an integrated 4K Blu-ray player to play your physical games. Its superior GPU means it plays games at higher resolutions than the Xbox Series S and is more capable of pushing games to 120 FPS.
On the other hand, the Xbox Series S still includes all the next-gen features that make these consoles so exciting, like the SSD and real-time ray-tracing support. Fortnite has received a brand new update for all platforms. This update starts Season 3 and also includes support for locked 60 FPS. This comes at the expense of Dynamic Resolution but how much is the resolution affected with this new mode?
Fortnite Battle Royale is available free to play on both the PS4 and Xbox One so we decided to check both of them out to see how much different the two different visual modes stack on each platform. The option to run the game at 60 FPS is toggled via a simple config in the settings menu. The screenshots taken below were from the two different modes, 30 FPS and 60 FPS. The difference is that one enables the dynamic resolution in order to make the game run at a higher frame rate and honestly speaking, it is impossible to go back to the 30 FPS mode again.
The 60 FPS mode not only retains most of the visuals, it also looks pretty good in motion, atleast on the Xbox One X. How Do I Take Advantage Of 120 Fps Support In Games On Xbox Series X
It’s clear that 120 FPS support in games can be a huge benefit, especially for competitive or challenging games that beg for fast response times and fluidity. However, it’s not immediately clear how to obtain 120 FPS even in supported games. It turns out it’s slightly more complicated than it would immediately appear. In this section, I’ll go over the three things you need to keep in mind to take advantage of 120 FPS support in games. Choose your console, choose your TV, and choose your game. Let’s get started.

How Much Faster Is It
In real terms, not much, at least right now. Digital Foundry conducted some scientifically rigorous testing on both consoles and found, at the absolute most, the Xbox One S could be 9fps faster than than Xbox One. This is rare, though: most of their findings show the Xbox One S having a sub-3fps advantage over the Xbox One.
The extreme results came from the tricky Project CARS, with Digital Foundry finding in rainy conditions at the Monaco circuit with a load of cars in view, the Xbox One S was faster. The reason for this is because Project CARS has an unlocked framerate, which means the Xbox is allowed free reign over how fast it can go. This means a GPU with more grunt will always have the advantage.
In other titles where the framerate is locked to 30fps, theres much less difference. This is because both consoles are capable of rendering these titles at above 30fps, but because the game has been locked to that number of frames, the Xbox One S cant show its true colours.
There is evidence the One S can actually maintain 30fps more consistently than the original Xbox One, with the likes of Batman: Arkham Knight seemingly more stable, especially in the tricky Batmobile sections. Digital Foundry also found this boost helps forward-compatible Xbox 360 games.
Is Xboxs Better Than Xbox One
While both the Xbox One and Xbox One S play games natively at 1080p, the Xbox One S can upscale games to 4K resolution if you have a 4K TV. That makes for a better picture than 1080p or 720p, although its not as good as native 4K. The original Xbox One does not support HDR for games or video playback.

Are There Any Downsides To Fps Boost
Arguably, the biggest drawback is that not all titles are compatible with FPS Boost. Microsoft will continue to roll out compatibility to more titles over time, so keep an eye on the Xbox YouTube channel if youre eager for more information.
Some games will see limitations put in place to maintain a high level of performance. For example, two titles that have already received the FPS Boost treatment are Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. With FPS Boost enabled, these titles are limited to 1080p resolutionas opposed to 4K with FPS Boost disabled.
Without intervention in the form of a software update, some titles will see compromises to visual fidelity so that frame rate targets can be hit. Keep in mind that you can turn the feature off on a game-by-game basis if need be.

How Do I Use Xbox Fps Boost
In order to take advantage of this framerate-boosting feature, you’ll just need to play the games on your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. It’ll automatically be enabled as long as your console has the latest updates. To verify a game is running with FPS Boost, you can press the Xbox button on your controller to check for the FPS Boost and/or Auto HDR labels.
Do note that in order to enjoy a game at 120 FPS on Xbox Series X or S, you’ll want to make sure you have one of the best 120Hz TVs available. You’ll also need to enable 120Hz on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The Xbox One S All-Digital, like its disc-supporting cousin the Xbox One S, offers 4K playback for various media streaming apps to a compatible 4K display via HDMI. This includes apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, and Microsofts own Movies & TV digital purchasing service.
Destiny 2 Xbox One X Fps Benchmarks
We tested three scenes for Destiny 2, but only two will make it into this content.
The first is our multiplayer scene: This is the first point at which other players can accompany you in the game, and is one of the bigger battles. Its also the only scene where we plotted both frametime spikes and drops, with frametimes ranging from 16ms to 66ms. The average was 33.3ms, for 30FPS, with four frames repeating. Of 6300 frames, thats 0.06% of all frames, so totally insignificant and not noticeable during gameplay. A few frames also render as fast as 16.667ms, oddly, and would be an effective 60FPS but it only happens three times.
We can tab through a few examples of repeated frames . Again, theyre not common, and it basically requires manual scrubbing of footage to visually notice them. Still, the Xbox One X does not always offer enough power to render every single frame and hit the V-sync target.
Here’s the interesting thing about this chart: Power consumption is around 110W, which means we have plenty of power leftover for more processing. The game seems like it could run at 60FPS at least part of the time — but maybe it just wasn’t crossing the threshold enough to make the cut. Odd that so little of the total power is being utilized, here.

Xbox One Original Vs Xbox One X
Hello everyone. Hope you all are enjoying the 2nd round of the Test Tech.
I mentioned in the feedback thread that I was upgrading to the X from the original 500GB. A few wanted to hear some feedback from me comparing to two. I figured I would start a new thread so it doesnt get lost in the official thread.
Last weekend I was playing on the original XB one. I was completely hating the game. I liked nothing about it. Im not a pro at Gears by any means, but Ive been playing for a long time and Im no slouch. I was getting my handed to me. Player movement felt so slow and clunky and took awhile to register what I was doing.
During this past week, I watched some YouTube reviews on the game. This one reviewer borrowed their friends X to play. They own the original. The difference was night and day according to them. I was due for an upgrade anyway, but after hearing that, it made it easier to pull the trigger and order a new X.
My opinion on the game has changed dramatically by switching consoles. Theres still things about the game I dont like, but Im starting to adapt to these changes and Im having fun.
If anyone is still playing on the original One, I highly recommend upgrading. I know it sounds crazy to spend all that money for 1 game, but if youre a die hard gears fan like me, its worth it.

Xbox One X Vs Xbox One S: Conclusion
There is little doubt that Xbox One X is a more powerful, more graphically competent games console than the Xbox One S or its digital-only counterpart, but you have to pay a premium price for such a premium machine.
If you are content with Full HD gaming, the Xbox One S is an excellent games machine and 4K Blu-ray player. And, the All-Digital Edition might be able to fit an even tighter budget, at the cost of ditching the ability to spin Blu-rays, disc games, and the like.
If your budget can stretch though, we also thoroughly recommend you check out the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

What Has Microsoft Done
The Xbox One Ss GPU is clocked at 914MHz, which is a minor increase over the 853MHz in the original Xbox One. Similarly, the tiny amount of ESRAM has seen a bandwidth increase up from 204GB/s to 219GB/s.
Microsoft has been able to stuff the One Ss components into a smaller chassis with quieter cooling and a smaller power supply, despite increasing the power of the chip. This is because the company has switched from a 28-nanometre chip manufacturing process to a 14nm one. The move means it can squeeze more performance out of the chip without increasing power consumption and heat. The Xbox One S will likely consume less power than the Xbox One thanks to this development.

Frame Rate Is Everything
That’s right. Frame rate means everything to me. I’ve had both the Xbox Series S and Series X since they launched in November, and in that time I’ve become a complete frame rate snob. For me, frame rate is the most important attribute when it comes to judging how “next gen” a game looks.
And if a game doesn’t at least offer a 60fps mode, I will likely not play it. Sounds harsh, I know, but it’s true. Games that run at 60fps look smoother, are more aesthetically pleasing and respond more quickly than lower frame-rate games. Once you’ve experienced it in more than a handful of games, it’s hard to go back to 30fps.
All of this is why I had a difficult time recommending the Xbox Series S to friends looking for a next-generation system when I first bought it back in November. Aside from the faster load times, most backwards-compatible games ran no better than they did originally. There were a few games that were optimized for the Series S, like Gears 5, that looked great and ran at 60fps. But there weren’t nearly enough of these.
That’s all changed now, thanks to the huge influx of both FPS Boost games and also the release of more and more Series S optimized games.
There are now 97 games that feature FPS Boost on Xbox Series X and S.
