Microsoft Updates Its Services Agreement Which Now Includes A Clause Revealing That Gamers Who Don’t Log In To Their Accounts May Lose Their Xbox Gamertags

Present or former Xbox users who haven’t played on the console or logged in via the internet in a long while should be aware that Microsoft has issued a recent change to its service agreement. Gamers who don’t log in to their Microsoft accounts after a certain period will be at risk of losing their gamertags.

Microsoft recently updated its service agreement for Xbox gamers and users of other Microsoft services on July 15th, and it will take effect starting on September 15th. Among a wide variety of changes to various Microsoft services, Microsoft has revealed that gamers who don’t log in to their Xbox Live accounts over a period of five years may lose their gamertags.

Microsoft has been working to release old unused gamertags back to the general public of users, and this update is probably to continue its efforts. As far back as five years ago, Microsoft released unused gamertags that had been unused since the days of the original Xbox console. However, they’ve also been recently working to return inactive gamertags to active users, releasing one million gamertags to Xbox Live Gold users just a few months ago.

Gamers who haven’t used their Xbox consoles and want to preserve their gamertags should be sure to login to their accounts before September, either by using their consoles or signing in to the Xbox homepage.

With the exception of short clips, content is not currently available for streaming, and must be downloaded. Movies are available for rental from the Video Marketplace. They expire in 14 days after download or at the end of the first 24 hours after the movie has begun playing, whichever comes first. Television episodes can be purchased to own, and are transferable to an unlimited number of consoles. Downloaded files use 5.1 surround audio and are encoded using VC-1 for video at 720p, with a bitrate of 6.8 Mbit/s. Posted by: Jay Curd on 19 December, 2014 11:58 AM

If youre an Xbox One owner youll be aware that the console can take a very, very long time to install games and updates particularly with the recent spate of outages and maintenances to the Xbox Live and online services making the wait even more excruciating. The last thing you need is your console powering itself off mid-installation halting progress when youve just popped out to do some Christmas shopping.

But did you know that the power off time on the Xbox One console can be adjusted, so the console will only fully turn off after a period of inactivity which you can choose for yourself?

Heres how to do it:

From the Xbox One Dashboard press the Menu button on the controller and select Settings.

Select the option for Power and Start-up and then go Turn off after on the list.

The outage started a few hours ago and was reported to initially only affect sign-in. The outage has been ongoing for hours, with Xbox users from around the world being affected.

During the outage, you may have issues with sign-in and even firing up games.

Our teams are continuing their investigation and have found that users experiencing sign-in issues may have issues with Purchasing Content and Party Chat as well. We will send additional updates here and on when we have more information to share.

  • Launch With The Original Xbox

As Microsoft developed the original Xbox console, online gaming was designated as one of the key pillars for the greater Xbox strategy. Sega had made an attempt to capitalize on the ever-growing online gaming scene when it launched the Dreamcast video game console in 1999, including online support as standard, with the SegaNet service in North America and Dreamarena in Europe. Nevertheless, due to lack of widespread broadband adoption at the time, the Dreamcast shipped with only a dial-up modem while a later-released broadband adapter was neither widely supported nor widely available. was available, though limited in size due to the narrowband connection and the size limitations of a memory card. The PlayStation 2 did not initially ship with built-in networking capabilities.

The packaging for playable Xbox Live titles on the original Xbox console featured a trademark lumiscient orange-gold bar underneath the Xbox header. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Brute Force sported a Live “bubble” design, as they only featured downloadable content. It was changed later, wherein all Xbox Live titles included the universal orange-gold Live bar. By the time of the Xbox 360, all titles were required to provide at least a limited form of Xbox Live “awareness”. In July 2004, Xbox Live had reached 1 million online users. In July 2005, Xbox Live had reached 2 million online users.

Xbox Live is huge, so any outages like this will have a major impact on the gaming community. Don’t forget, though, it is just like any other form of technology it isn’t perfect and can encounter issues from time to time.

Its not clear or confirmed at all that this Xbox Live outage is from a surge of people playing on the console due to the issues with the disease encouraging more at-home gaming. Xbox Live goes down all the time, and yet it does stand to reason that there is going to be a lot more traffic on PSN and XBL for a while to come because of this situation.

Usually these outages dont last very long, and if Xbox Live was still down in more than another hour or two I would be surprised. But Microsoft has the additional complicating factor of many of its employees now having to adapt to working from home, and the same is true for a great number of other gaming companies as well. Microsoft and Bungie are both Seattle-based companies, and were some of the first to issue work from home orders given that the area was the first place coronavirus started spreading in the US.

Check back here for updates. Hopefully its back on soon.

Update: It took a long while, but everything appears to be online and back to normal.

Microsoft Confirms It Has Removed Yearly Xbox Live Gold Subscription

    • 0

Over the past few days, speculation has been rampant that Microsoft might be planning to make changes to its Xbox Live Gold service, following the discovery that it was no longer possible to buy 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscriptions from the Microsoft Store.

And now, Microsoft has confirmed its removal wasn’t a mistake.

Speaking to True Achievements, a Microsoft spokesperson issued the following statement:

“At this time, Xbox has decided to remove the 12 months Xbox Live Gold SKU from the Microsoft online Store. Customers can still sign up for a one month or three month Xbox Live Gold subscription online through the Microsoft Store.”

Microsoft hasn’t given any reason for why the subscription has been dropped, although fan speculation has suggested the service might be being phased out, and even that Xbox Live multiplayer might become free.

Nothing is official for now though, so we’ll have to wait a little longer until the cause of its removal is determined. So, what do you think? Is Gold going free? Are price changes on the way? Let us know your thoughts below.

Xbox One Will Live On After Xbox Series X Launches

How to See If You Have 10 Year Status

The beginning of a new console generation is an exciting time, but it can also be a worrying one for owners of current-generation hardware. The temptation for console makers to throw all their weight behind a new machine must be pretty strong, but thankfully, they often keep supporting old-generation hardware for a while after a new console launches. Thats particularly true when the old-gen hardware was a popular seller, like the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 2.

That doesnt always happen, though, and some platform holders have shown a willingness to drop an underperforming console as soon as they release a new one. A good example of that is Nintendo, which almost instantly stopped making new games for the doomed Wii U the moment the Switch arrived on the scene. Were it not for the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had already been confirmed for the Wii U, we would have probably even seen Nintendo ditch the console sooner.

It begs the question of what Microsoft will do with the Xbox One once the Xbox Series X arrives later this year. Its not exactly a secret that the Xbox One hasnt had the best console cycle after a reveal event that was largely panned by players, the Xbox One seemed destined to finish a distant second to the PlayStation 4. We dont know if thats actually the case, because Microsoft stopped sharing console sales numbers regarding the Xbox One, which was taken as a sign that things were bad.

How To Fix Xbox One Connection Problems

When Xbox Live sign-in is online, here’s how you can test your internet and reconnect. The black magic of networking leaves hundreds of possible causes, though some common troubleshooting steps could find your remedy.

While Xbox Live may appear fully functional, the service can experience brief hiccups, even with regional snags affecting small groups of users. These outages often slip past unnoticed but could be the root of temporary problems. We advise restarting your Xbox One, which will reattempt a connection to Xbox Live.

If your Xbox One remains offline, your home networking setup could be facing issues. The Xbox One’s integrated connection testing tool helps diagnose any problems and provides guidance to a solution.

  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select the Network settings tile. Further Xbox Live status information can be found on-screen.
  • Select Test network connection, located on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • Upon completion, your Xbox One will provide further details on your current connection setup. If connected to Xbox Live, your console is ready to go. However, if issues arise, the on-screen message will provide the next steps to a potential fix. For personal assistance, head over to Microsoft’s official Xbox Support portal.

Microsoft this week revealed itll no longer be making the Xbox One X or the Xbox One S digital edition. Instead, itll be focusing on the Xbox Series X, its new baby though itll continue to sell the standard Xbox One S for the foreseeable future.

In a statement to The Verge, a spokesperson said As we ramp into the future with Xbox Series X, were taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. Xbox One S will continue to be manufactured and sold globally. Word of console shortages, the One X included, has been going around since the COVID-19 pandemic started, and discontinuing these will likely cause a run on the ones still on store shelves.

As for why its stopping production on the consoles, there are likely different reasons for each one. A persistent industry rumor has it that Xbox is planning to reveal a second Xbox Series console, a completely digital version codenamed Lockhart. If true, itd be easy to see why the company would want to replace the One S digital edition with a new digital-only console.
