These 4 Tips Will Help You Max Out Your Xbox One Controllers Battery Life

How To Use AAA Batteries For Your Xbox One Controller

The Xbox One gamepad might be the best feature of Microsofts last-generation console, which makes the fact that it works on the Xbox Series X and S even better. Its comfortable triggers, easy-to-reach analog sticks, and, most importantly, energy-efficient design allow you to play games for weeks on end without having to swap out your batteries. Eventually, though, your controller is going to die and, likely, your character along with it and youre going to have to replace those AAs if you want to continue gaming.

Thankfully, were here to point out what works and what doesnt when it comes to your battery life, so you can keep yourself in the game with minimal interruption.

How Long On Average Does Your Controller Battery Pack Last

Mines seems to go to minimum power after about 3-4 hours after a full charge, I’m thinking I might need to get another battery and play and charge kit.

Or is this normal?

Battery Packs eventually deminish with subsequent charges.

I had some Battery Packs for my Xbox 360 wireless but now I use a wired controller.

i just put rechargable batteries in. i got a good set of 2900mAh duracells and they last for weeks.

I just use rechargeable batteries. They seem to last a fair while and I always have the previous recharged set on standby for when they die.

: Thing is, mines isn’t even that old. Even when I first got it, I noticed it couldn’t hold a charge for very long.

maybe it was faulty.

I’ve gone through three of the things. First was fine for a good few years, second and third seemed to barely last a few hours and now need to be permanently connected. I’m done spending money on them.

Either use rechargeable batteries or get a wired controller.

Rechargeable Xbox batteries? The kind that comes with the Play-and-Charge kit? Mine lost the capacity to hold a charge for more than 30 minutes in less than half a year. Terrible.

When In Doubt Top It Off

Even if your DualShock controller still has some bars on the indicator, its a good idea to charge it fully when its not in use.; Youve probably heard that battery memory is a concern when overcharging devices. Luckily, battery memory is a thing of the past.

The lithium-ion batteries you can find today dont usually contain battery memory limitations. You dont have to worry about draining a battery or overcharging one. Controllers like the DualShock 4 use this particular kind of battery, so you can charge it anytime, for any length of time, without concern that youll wreck the battery life.;

With todays game technology, you have great reason to test out your full battery capacity every once in a while. That said, you can really test out its lengths by calibrating the battery life indicator. Its best to drain your battery once about every 30 charges to get an accurate battery life indicator. This may seem counterintuitive, but depleting that battery all the way every so often helps fight off problems, like digital memory, in the long-run.;

Digital memory specifically forces your device to send false battery capacity reports. If this starts happening, you can recalibrate your controller to try and fix it. If it goes unchecked, it could be challenging to tell exactly when or if you need to charge your controller after a while.

Battery Life Is Holding Up

How long does the Xbox One Play & Charge battery last ...

One of my favorite things about the Elite Series 2 is the convenience of its charge dock and its monstrous battery life. In testing, over three months, the battery doesn’t seem to have lost any charge whatsoever, which is a positive sign.

The fact the battery cannot be swapped out is potentially problematic for users hoping that this controller will stand the test of time, since all batteries eventually deplete. The quality of the cells used can have a big impact on how long it actually takes for those cells to deplete, though, and so far it’s looking like Microsoft didn’t cheap out on us here. I’m still exceeding forty hours usage on a single charge, which is beyond even Microsoft’s own estimates.

Battery Life And Waste Potential

First is the decision to switch to a built-in rechargeable battery rather than having a replaceable pair of as all the other official Xbox One controllers have this generation. This is one of the debatable changes, with both sides having a few valid points. The built-in battery makes for a controller with fewer moving and creaking parts and an overall more solid-feeling controller. On the other hand, the overall life of the battery a hair shorter than a pair of standard AA batteries, checking in at 40 hours instead of 50.

One of the big questions that comes with a decision like this is that of waste. On the one hand, a built-in battery means that once the controllers battery completely dies, many players will put it aside or throw it out if its out of warranty, where a controller with replaceable batteries can be re-used by swapping in a new pair. On the other hand, a built-in battery that recharges without a separate wall outlet means that people wont be swapping AA batteries in and out all the time. I have a few friends that are committed to using rechargeable NiMH batteries, but many players just swap in new AA batteries when one pair dies.

Are Rechargeable Batteries Worth It

When Rechargeable Batteries Waste Money Theres no doubt about it: using rechargeable batteries reduces waste and is good for the environment. However, if saving money is your primary reason to make the switch, dont run out and replace every single AA, AAA, C and D battery in your home with rechargeable versions.

Dont Bother With The Play And Charge Kit

Microsoft sells a rechargeable battery pack made especially for the Xbox One, the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit, which replaces your AA batteries with a lithium-ion battery pack that you charge using a Micro USB cable. Connecting the cable to your console also allows you to connect the controller without syncing it wirelessly.

The charge packs lithium-ion battery can get up to 30 hours of battery life and charges in four hours. Thats fine, but its nothing compared to what you can get with other rechargeable batteries. The Play and Charge Kits battery is only 1400mAh just slightly above the PlayStation 4s pack while AA alkaline batteries can go all the way up to 3000mAh.

While it sounds nice, using a charging cable instead of replacing batteries isnt as great as it sounds. Unless you want to charge the battery exclusively through the Xbox One, you need another charging block with a USB port. Also, the battery pack will be completely useless for anything other than your Xbox One controller.

Third-party charging stations can eliminate the need for another charger, but its battery still isnt up to snuff. At only 1100mAh, it holds a smaller capacity than even the cheapest AAA batteries, and it will take you more than two hours to completely charge your pack.

Turning Off Rumble May Help

HOW TO GET INFINITE BATTERY LIFE! (XBOX ONE CONTROLLER)

When your Xbox controller is low on battery, rumble is automatically disabled to preserve what little power remains. You can use this principle to extend the battery life of your controller even when its fully charged. You will lose rumble entirely, which means youll get less feedback from games, potentially impacting reaction time or immersion.

To do this, go to Settings and select Ease of use on the left side of the screen. Choose Controller, then disable Turn on vibration to disable the feature entirely.;Its no secret that the controller is a bit lifeless and dull with rumble disabled, but theres no doubting the fact that youll get more playtime from a single charge this way.

Do Aa Batteries Last Longer Than Rechargeable Battery Packs

Yes, in fact they do. The average lifespan of AA batteries in an Xbox controller is roughly 40 hours. The average lifespan of the most common rechargeable battery pack, the Xbox Play and Charge Kit, is only 30 hours. The Play and Charge kit’s battery life decreases over time too. Xbox Support even recommends AA batteries over a rechargeable alternative.;

Whats New With The Elite Series 2

Theres a lot thats identical to the Elite controller here. Enough that if youre happy with your Elite controller, you shouldnt feel any temptation or fear-of-missing-out on this one. The core controller is pretty similar to the original.

With that said, there are a bunch of quality-of-life features that make the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 a clear improvement over its predecessor.

Still Functioning Like New

The Xbox Elite Controller has a large amount of moving parts and connective pieces, owing to customizable thumbsticks, paddles, and so on. It also has unique rubber grips that attach in a few panels around the front and the back, giving it a bit of ergonomic flair. While these features are great, they technically introduce a few additional points of failure that the regular Xbox controllers don’t have. Thankfully, though, after three months of hefty abuse, every corner of my Elite Series 2 controller is still functioning as new.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect, for me, is how firmly the grips still feel attached. Microsoft revised the process and chemistry for the rubber grips this time around, and it seems to show. It’s tough to get anything underneath the seams, which bodes well for their longevity.

The paddles, triggers, and thumbsticks are all still in top-notch working order as well, eventhough I haven’t really been making much of an effort to keep them clean and free of dust. I haven’t had a single issue with my triggers or bumpers either, the latter of which I’d heard were problematic for some V1 Elite controller users.

Dim Your Controllers Light Bar

Xbox One Twin Docking Station and 2 Rechargeable Battery ...

One of the innovative and unique features on the DualShock 4 is the front-facing light bar, which changes colors in certain games, and allows the PlayStation camera to track the controller for registering players and;PlayStation VR games. While its impossible to turn the light completely off, you can dim the light considerably from the quick menu. Select Sound/Devices and Brightness of DualShock 4 Light Bar and youll see three different settings bright, medium, and dim. By default, the light is set to bright, but you can change it to dim.

We havent encountered any issues with the camera recognizing the dim light, so theres no reason not to save some extra juice and;keep your controller running for longer.

Keep A Spare Controller In Your Bullpen

Eventually, youre going to get engrossed in an online shooter or role-playing game, and your controllers battery life will begin to dwindle. You could take a break and let it charge before resuming your play session or plug it into your console with a Micro USB cable, but neither solution is ideal. Instead, keep an extra controller on standby!

If youve purchased a second controller for your PlayStation 4, just connect it to your console with its included cable and allow it to charge while youre still using your other controller. If you put your console into rest mode rather than turning it off completely, go back to the Power Save Settings menu mentioned earlier and choose Set Features Available in Rest Mode. There, you will find an option to supply power to the USB ports, allowing the controller to continue charging.

If leaving your PS4 on standby all the time doesnt work for you, there are also a number of third-party charging cradles that offer a convenient place to stash extra controllers. The PowerA charging cradle, for example, costs between $25 and $30, and allows you to simultaneously charge two controllers without being tethered to your PS4.

When the controller is charging, the indicator light on top of the controller will blink orange. When the light shuts off entirely, youll know the charge is complete. Its a good idea to have one charger on the cradle at all times. That way, you will always have a DualShock 4 controller ready for use.

Tips For Saving Battery Life In Your Playstation 4 Controller

The PlayStation 4 is a brilliant system with an absolutely killer lineup of exclusive games. That means weve spent plenty of time with its wireless controller, the DualShock 4. Though we appreciate its large face buttons, terrific direction pad, and responsive, snappy triggers, the DualShock does not have fantastic battery life. Typically, the DualShock 4 lasts for four to eight hours of play per charge , far less than the Xbox One controller or the Nintendo Switch Pro controller.

Why does the DualShock 4 battery die so quickly? Simple its equipped with a 1000mAh battery, which is substantially smaller than standard AA batteries used in the Xbox One;gamepad. Unless you want to commit to a wired connection, youre going to want to take some steps to squeeze extra life out of your PlayStation 4 controller. Luckily, we have some tricks to help you ensure that youll never have to wait to play again.

Dont Worry About Leaving It Turned On

For the gamers with PlayStation 4s DualShock 4 controller, you likely know that your controller can stay on forever if you match the settings correctly. It doesnt even matter if youve left your controller idle for an extended period itll stay on. The Xbox Ones controller functions a bit differently. No matter how you play with the settings, this controller will automatically switch off after 15 minutes of idling. We know this can be frustrating, especially if youre watching Netflix and dont have a mic set up for voice recognition. But it only takes a few quick seconds to reconnect your controller once you punch the Home button.;

If youre using more than one controller and need to quickly check if any of them need a recharge, you can do so straight from the Xbox One home screen. Once youre on the home screen, click the Home button on each controller. From there, a small level will pop up on your display, letting you know their corresponding battery levels. There you can also see which controllers are already connected via USB or are currently charging.

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 Re

How to fix Xbox One Controller Wireless Connection, Battery Connection & Power Issues

Our initial review of the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 was rather glowing, owing to its beefy battery life, convenient charge dock, ergonomic design, and customization. While it felt more durable than any gamepad that preceded it in our initial review, you can never really tell how something will survive over the long term without, well, time.

The previous Xbox Elite Controller seemed rock solid at the outset, but came with a hidden point of failure, most notably in its rubber grips which, frustratingly, would warp and fall off over time. I personally experienced that with two Elite controllers previously, so it’s understandable that there have been some concerns with how this new Elite Series 2 controller would hold up.

I decided to write up my experiences with the controller three months in to let you know how it’s doing. Turns out, the answer is pretty damn good.

I also purposefully haven’t recently cleaned up the controller for this re-review, so you can get an idea of dusty it might look a few weeks out of the box.

Reduce Your Controllers Speaker Volume Turn Off Vibration

In addition to the noise coming from your television or audio system, the DualShock 4 itself is equipped with a speaker, which certain games use for gameplay cues, novelty sound effects, and other diegetic twists. In Destiny 2, for instance, your controller will regularly make noise while youre in combat, alerting you more quickly than the standard game audio can.

The speaker, while fun, is much louder than it needs to be. Just go to the quick menu and select Devices as you did when adjusting the light bar, and youll see an option labeled Volume Control . Select that and you can reduce the volume to be much quieter and more battery-power efficient.

If you want to remove all controller feedback, go to the Devices menu in your PlayStation 4 Settings, followed by the Controllers option. Here, you can disable all vibration. Its an extreme step most games use some kind of vibration as a gameplay cue but if your controller battery is having trouble holding a charge, this may keep you going.
