How To Play Xbox Games On PC (2021)

The Xbox One consoles also support remote streaming, but you need a third-party app to get it working on a Mac. Considering Microsoft owns and develops both, getting streaming between an Xbox One and a Windows computer is really simpleyou basically just need to sign into both with your Microsoft account.

If you have a Windows 10 machine at hand, you will need:

  • A 1.5GHz or faster CPU
  • 2GB or more of RAM
  • For best results, get a wired internet connection to your Xbox One or Windows 10 computer , but wireless connections will work too.

First get your Xbox ready. From Settings, go to Devices & streaming and Device connections, then make sure all the options on the next screen are enabledremote connections from other devices, and game streaming to those devices.

On Windows 10, just launch the Xbox Console Companion app from the Start menu and plug in an Xbox One controller via USB. You can sign in using the same credentials you use for your console , then choose Connection from the menu on the left. If your Xbox One console is on the same network and switched on, then it should get picked up automatically.

Click Stream, and the Xbox One display is then streamed to your Windows computeryou can use the attached controller to operate it as normal, whether thats in games or across the Xbox menus. You can switch the console off remotely too.

Macs Aren’t Officially Invited But They Might Still Sneak In

Microsoft describes Xbox Cloud Gaming as “for Windows 10 PCs and Apple phones and tablets.” Notice what’s missing there? MacBooks and Mac desktops. Naturally, I tried it on a Mac. Chrome was never able to launch a game, as it refused to recognize my controller. I had better luck with Safari, but it was still inconsistent. Performance also felt choppier than on one of the officially supported platforms.;

Launching Games From The Xbox App

Once you’re streaming, you can launch games and apps from the Xbox One dashboard. The display that you would normally see on your television will still appear on the television, but it will also be mirrored on your PC monitor, tablet, or laptop screen. This allows you to navigate the Xbox dashboard, and launch games, as you normally would.

If you prefer to launch a game directly from your PC to get right into the action, that’s also an option.

  • Launch the Xbox app.

  • This will automatically connect to the console and start streaming if everything is set up correctly.

    Remote Play lets you stream games from your Xbox to your phone, tablet, or PC. It’s convenient and easy to use, but you will have to set it up first. Here’s how to get started streaming your Xbox games locally.

    Image: Microsoft

    If you have an Xbox, it goes without saying that the best experience is sitting on your couch in front of a big HDR TV with good gaming features. But sometimes your TV isn’t availablemaybe you’re out of the house, someone else is hogging the living room, or youre just too lazy to get out of bed for some Gears of War. Microsoft has you covered with Remote Play, allowing you to stream games from your Xbox right to your phone, tablet, or PC.

    It should be noted that this is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming , which streams games from Microsofts own servers to your device. Remote Play renders those games on your home Xbox to another device. The feature doesn’t require an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, but you will need a compatible controller.

    Remote Play is a convenient feature that is easy to use, but you will have to set it up first. Here’s how to get started streaming your Xbox games locally.

    Streaming Xbox Games To A Windows Pc

    You can stream Xbox games to your PC from the Connections tab in the Xbox Console Companion app.

    • In the Connections tab, press the Stream button to begin streaming the Xbox One console to your PC.
    • Once youve established the stream, youll need to decide if you want to connect your Xbox One controller to your PC or continue to operate it from your Xbox. If your Xbox is a bit further away, you may wish to connect it to your PC. Once youre ready to proceed, press Continue.

    Stream Xbox Games To Your Phone Or Tablet

    For on-the-go Xbox gaming, download the Xbox app for your Android or iOS device, sign in, and connect a controller to your phone. An Xbox One controller will do nicely, especially paired with a foldable clip, though you can also use mobile controllers designed for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices like the Gamevice.

    From the Xbox app on your phone or tablet, tap the Connection icon in the upper-right cornerit’s the one that looks like an Xbox with radio waves coming out of it . Tap the console in question, then choose Remote Play on This Device to start a remote session. Remember, the closer you are to the router, the better your experience will be over Wi-Fi.

    Note that the Series X may have one or two quirks at this time as well, though in my experience it can vary from game to game. Forza Horizon 4, for example, currently has a bug when streaming from the the Series X where moving the joystick also presses the corresponding D-Pad button. Other users report audio crackling when streaming with the latest Xboxes.;

    While it is now physically possible to stream from your new console to a mobile device, it hasnt been perfected yet. Hopefully, Microsoft and developers will continue to improve the experience as they roll out more streaming support for the Series X and S.

    How To Play Xbox One Games On Pc Via Xbox Play Anywhere

    When it comes to playing Xbox One games on your PC, Microsoft offers some great solutions. First to mention is the Xbox Play Anywhere program. Since 2016, Microsoft has been offering the service that allows gamers to purchase and play a number of their digitally downloaded games on both their Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Any game that is part of this program will state that it is available on Xbox One and PC in the games info page in the Xbox store.

    You dont actually need to own an Xbox One to play these games, as they can be purchased straight from the Store app on your PC. To play these games on your PC, it is as simple as opening the Xbox app, selecting the My Games tab and downloading/launching them from there. As long as your PC is powerful enough to play the Xbox One game, you should be good to go. All of your saves are cross compatible as well, meaning that you can go back and forth between your console and PC and retain all of your progress. A list of Xbox Play Anywhere games can be found here.

    How Can I Play Xbox Game Pass Games Without Downloading Them

    Right now, Microsoft is building a live game streaming service called Project xCloud. With this, youll be able to sign up to Xbox Game Pass and stream games directly from the cloud. This means you can play right away, without downloading them.

    However, right now Project xCloud is available for preview on a very limited basis. If youd like to sign up, you can do so here but note that you may not get accepted straight away, if at all. In the future, Project xCloud will be available to the public and youll be able to access all of its features by signing up to Xbox Game Pass or by purchasing games on the Xbox app.

    It’s Not Time To Toss Your Console Yet

    While it’s great to see more games available in more places, testing the Xbox Cloud Gaming beta also reminded me that we’re not quite there yet on game streaming. On both iPads and PCs, performance was often stuttery and slow, the visuals would break up into digital noise and my controller inputs felt thrown off by too much delay. Even with a solid internet connection, the experience varied wildly. The most disappointing thing is just how much loading screen wait time there was within games. It often felt slower to load game levels than playing locally.;

    In other words, the same problems you can have with GeForce Now, Stadia or other cloud gaming services. At their best, you can forget you’re not playing on a gaming PC or console. But the consistency of experience isn’t there yet, especially for twitch-based games like first-person shooters or competitive esports games.;

    How to Turn Your PC Into an Xbox One

    There are two ways to play Xbox Games on Windows 11/10 PC. Either you can stream from console to PC or play it using Xbox Play Anywhere Program. While the former works with any game, the latter depends on the game.

    1] Playing ANY Xbox Game by streaming from console to PC

    The Xbox Console can stream games onto Windows 11/0 PC. It works via the Xbox App installed on the PC, which uses the same Microsoft account on the PC and the Xbox console.; To ensure this delivers the best experience, you need to ensure they are on the same network and have a router that can handle streaming properly. While Xbox App will automatically adjust the streaming quality, you can manually change it even beyond high-quality settings.

    This gaming setup comes in handy if your TV is busy and your console is nearby your PC. The controller stays connected with Xbox One, while your PC acts only as a streaming device.

    Gears of War 4 is an Xbox Play Anywhere compatible game. It means you can play it both on the PC and the Xbox One. Follow the steps to play it on Windows 10 PC:

    • Find the game that is available on both the platform so you can continue where you left.
    • You can use it the same way as you use it on the Console.

    • Now you can play the game using the controller, just like you play on the console with the same controls.
