Xbox Series X Vs Pc: Which Is Right For You

Xbox Game Bar Gets a Big New Update

The Xbox Series X looks like the most powerful home console ever made and its still not as powerful as a high-end gaming PC. With holiday 2020 and the release of the new consoles drawing ever closer, a lot of gamers may want to start squirreling money away for their next big tech toy. But at the beginning of any console generation, its worth asking: Would that $500 be better invested in a console, or a PC?

The short answer is that both consoles and PCs have pros and cons, and that every users situation is a little different. But with the Xbox Series X, the calculus is a little bit different than before. The Xbox Series X isnt selling itself on exclusive games or bespoke hardware its just one way to access an entire gaming ecosystem. And, perhaps for the first time in console history, youll be able to access the exact same ecosystem on a PC.

This story isnt really about comparing an Xbox Series X and a gaming PC head-to-head, partially because there are thousands of different gaming PCs, and even with the Xbox Series X specs in hand, we havent seen how it performs firsthand yet. Instead, heres a look at whether theres still value in buying a console when everything it offers works just as well and probably better on a PC.

How Does The Xbox Series X Compare To Other Consoles

Lets just look at the numbers for some other consoles to help put the Series X into context.

For the sake of comparison, Ive put all the consoles on their side except for GameCube. GameCube just goes the one way. As this head-to-head reveals, the Xbox Series X is a big console at least in terms of width and height.

But if your concern is about fitting it into an entertainment center, I really dont think youre going to have a problem. As long as your space is at least six inches tall, the Series X is going to fit anywhere that a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X fits. Its actually smaller than PS4 in both width and depth. And that short depth means its going to slide easily even onto thinner shelves. I love that because it should make cable management easier.

The best comparison is probably to the GameCube. A Series X is like two of those duct-taped side-by-side.

So is the Series X really an unwieldy behemoth? Not really. Its squashed depth makes it a bit taller when you sit it on its side, but most people are going to find a place for it without much issue.

This fast storage also helps enable a feature called Quick Resume on both consoles, which allows you to switch between games incredibly quickly in a lot of cases. The big problem right now is that its not supported by every game, although Microsoft is working to enable it across more titles. When it works, though, Quick Resume is one of the consoles best new additions, and Sonys PS5 doesnt have an equivalent feature.

One of the most significant differences between the Series S and Series X is found in the graphics department. Although both consoles use AMDs RDNA 2 graphics architecture, the Series X has 52 compute units. Thats not only more than double the 20 compute units youll find in the Series S, but theyre also clocked faster at 1.825GHz compared to 1.565GHz. In total, that means the Series X has 12.15 teraflops of graphical horsepower according to Microsoft, compared to 4 teraflops for the Series S.

There arent many cross-platform titles that allow us to see how the performance of the PS5 and Series X compare in practice, but an analysis of Devil May Cry 5 by Digital Foundrysees Sony and Microsofts consoles performing very similarly. In some modes, the Series X offers slightly faster performance, while the PS5 is ahead in others.

BIG NEWS for the Next XBOX Console!!

If you dont own a 4K TV and have no plans to buy one in the next few years, I strongly recommend the Xbox Series S, which will still have enough power to look fantastic on your existing high-definition TV.

Alternately, if you have a 4K TV and really want to make the most out of 4K entertainment, you may want the Xbox Series X for its 4K Blu-ray player.

Xbox Game Pass For Everyone

Xbox Game Pass boasts a lot of variety. For many fans, the most important thing is that it has AAA titles like FIFA, Forza Horizon 5, or every single Halo game. Especially for console gamers, that’s more than enough. However, Xbox Game Pass also has smaller, beloved indie titles too, like Hollow Knight and Starbound. This huge variety of games is only beneficial to Game Pass subscribers, giving them access to more games for the same price. This massive, diverse library is the most appealing thing about Xbox Game Pass it allows gamers to experiment with games they may not have played otherwise.

It’s also beneficial to Microsoft and the developers of the games inside the Game Pass library. Adding more games like Destiny or Fallout 4 is great, especially for players with high-powered PCs or consoles, but it ultimately may bring more of the same audience that Xbox already has. A huge trend in gaming recently has demonstrated how much players especially women and people new to gaming love simple, accessible, cozy games.

Stardew Valley is a perfect example: It doesn’t require an expensive gaming rig, controls are simple, and the premise is pleasant and unintimidating. As Xbox Game Pass brings Stardew Valley and similar titles like Spiritfarer, Unpacking, and Firewatch to its library, the platform is opening the door to an entirely new audience. Simultaneously, Microsoft is making a statement that Xbox Game Pass isn’t just for diehard Halo fans it’s for everyone.

Agree To Continue: Xbox Series X And Series S

New Releases, Gameplay, and Updates | This Week on Xbox

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it contracts that no one actually reads. Its impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit agree to use devices when we review them, since these are agreements most people dont read and definitely cant negotiate.

To start using an Xbox Series X or Series S:

  • You need a Microsoft Account and have to agree to Microsofts terms of service.
  • You must agree to send diagnostic data to Microsoft .
  • You must agree to share usage data with game or app publishers.

You can also say yes or no to:

  • Optional usage data sent to Microsoft

Thats three mandatory agreements and one optional one to use an Xbox Series X or Series S.

Two of the biggest benefits of the Xbox Series S over the existing Xbox One are storage and a new Quick Resume feature. SSD storage boosts load times and performance, and Im really glad Microsoft picked this for the cheaper Series S. While its great to have the fast speeds, I dont think theres enough storage space on the Series S for most people.

You only get 364GB of usable storage on the Series S. I have six games installed on the Series S, and its almost full. and Destiny 2 take up over 100GB each, leaving little space for more games. Even if we estimate that the average AAA game is around 50GB, thats still only seven games in total.

Xbox Series X And Series S Dimensions Revealed

How big are the next-generation Xbox consoles? Here’s what you need to know about the dimensions of the Series X and Series S:

The Verge and other outlets recently got their hands on the Xbox Series X and Series S, and theyve been nice enough to share the dimensions of the next-gen console with the world.

The Xbox Series X checks in at about 5.9 inches wide and 11.8 inches tall. Its back panel features two USB ports, an Ethernet port, a storage expansion slot, and an HDMI 2.1 out port. Theres also a USB port in the front near the disc drive.

The Xbox Series S, meanwhile, is roughly 2.5 inches wide and 10.8 inches tall. Its about as tall as an Xbox One S if youre looking for a more practical reference. Its rear panel includes two USB ports, an HDMI 2.1 out port, an Ethernet port, and an expansion slot. Theres a USB port in the front as well, but theres obviously no disc drive on this all-digital console.

The Xbox Series X actually appears to be a little larger than some were initially speculating. Actually, weve seen some of those who handled preview models in their own homes note that the console is possibly a little too large to comfortably fit into tighter spaces. Its also been mentioned that it feels like it was designed to be kept in the vertical position. All-in-all, it really does resemble a desktop tower in a lot of ways.

Xbox Series X Or Xbox Series S

Before you buy the first Xbox that becomes available, you should know that Microsoft’s two new consoles have some significant differences. The $499 Xbox Series X is the flagship powerhouse of the family, designed to deliver immersive 4K gaming complete with a Blu-ray disc player and 1TB of internal storage for housing your digital downloads. If you have a 4K TV and want to experience the highest performance available on a console, you should spring for the Series X.

The $299 Xbox Series S is the streamlined, entry-level machine, able to play games at up to 1440p resolution and has roughly half the internal storage at 512GB. The Series S lacks a disc drive, so you’re limited to digital downloads only. It’s also significantly smaller than the chunky Xbox Series X, if space is a concern. If you’re still using a 1080p TV but want to enjoy many of the perks of next-gen gaming, this is the system for you.

Fortunately, these systems have a lot of key features in common. Both use a solid state drive , which allows games to load up within seconds. The Series X and Series S both feature Quick Resume, which lets you bounce between a handful of games at once without losing your progress in any of them. And they’re both capable of running games at up to 120 frames per second for super-smooth gameplay, complete with ray tracing technology that allows for ultra-realistic lighting and shadows.
