Warzone Devs Confirm 120hz Returns To Xbox Series Consoles Soon

Xbox Series consoles can no longer run Warzone at 120FPS, but Raven Software have confirmed the fix is coming very soon.

Xbox Series consoles havent supported 120FPS on Warzone since December, locking the game at 60FPS. Players have been desperate for it to return, and Raven Software have confirmed that 120Hz is coming back very soon.

While Warzone Pacific brought a brand-new map and has continued to bring a number of major quality of life updates, console players have been suffering from stuttering and textures failing to load. While PlayStation 5 players can enjoy the game at 120FPS, Xbox Series players lost the ability with the Season 1 update and have been stuck playing at 60FPS ever since.

In a pre-Warzone Season 3 interview with CharlieIntel, Raven Softwares Senior Creative Director Ted Timmins reaffirmed that they absolutely want to bring 120 FPS back to Xbox Series consoles, and have now confirmed that its coming back very soon.

Do I Need A Black Equalizer

The Black eQualizer feature is simply a fancy way of saying that the monitor can adjust parts of the gamma curve so that games do not look as the director intended. With the intention being that some dark shades lighter than intended. This improves visibility in dark areas on games, which is where the competitive advantage comes in, but it also reduces any sense of atmosphere the game is trying to convey. The image below shows a star field, as it should look . This is actually a desktop wallpaper but could equally be a scene in a game where there are plenty of dark shades.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Xbox One’s Support For 120 Hz Refresh Rates

Xbox One

The May update for the Xbox One includes support for televisions with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Does this benefit game players? For a handful, maybe. For everyone else, no. At least not now. The move to support 120 Hz refresh rates looks like Xbox preparing for a future that could come as soon as next year.

‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ frame rate comparison.

Refresh rate and frame rate

A television or monitor draws a series of still images on the screen at a speed that tricks the human visual system into perceiving motion. A screens refresh rate refers to the number of images it draws each second. American TVs have refresh rates of 60 or 120 Hz meaning they draw either 60 or 120 images on the screen every second . A higher refresh rate produces smoother looking motion.

Game players are usually concerned with frame rate rather than refresh rate. Frame rate is the speed at which the video source the game in this case creates the images that will be displayed on the screen. Games with high and consistent frame rates are more immersive and respond more quickly and accurately to commands issued by the player through a controller, mouse or keyboard.

Problems arise when the frame rate and refresh rate are out of sync because the timing between when the game renders an image and when the screen displays it is disrupted. Frame rate is often capped at either 30 or 60 fps to avoid these problems.

‘Monster Hunter World”s uncapped frame rate never quite reaches 60 fps.

Xbox Series X/S FPS Boost Can Double or Quadruple a Backward Compatible ...

When gaming on traditional displays, incoming frames are output on the fly to ensure the most recent image is reflected on-screen. When the number of frames output by a device exceeds the refresh rate of the display, a new frame can be pushed during a screen draw, resulting in two images being displayed at the same time. Known as “screen tearing,” this can ruin an otherwise-faultless gaming experience â especially when delving into higher frame rates.

For the best high refresh rate experience, we recommend using it alongside a recent addition to Xbox One: variable refresh rates . Powered by AMD’s in-house FreeSync technology, the console and compatible monitors can communicate directly, scaling a display’s refreshes to current outputted frames.

Will You Need A New Tv

So what will you need to play the latest games on your Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5? Well nothing. Your current TV will work just fine. If you can connect a PS4 or Xbox One to it, it will work fine with the next-gen consoles. You won’t need a new TV or new HDMI cables. If your current TV has HDR, it will play HDR games on the new consoles too. Ray-tracing is something rendered in the game, so that will look good on any TV.

If you want to take advantage of the new features like 8K, 120Hz and VRR, you will need a TV that supports it. 8K TVs are expensive now and will likely continue to be so in 2021 and beyond. Far more affordable are 4K TVs that support 120Hz and VRR. Many current midrange and higher-end 2019 and 2020 TVs, including models from LG, Samsung, Vizio and Sony, can handle these new extras. We have a list of all the 2020 models that have 4K, 120fps input and VRR.

Xbox Series X Is The Only Console That Will Run Mass Effect Legendary Edition At 120fps

How To get 120 HZ / FPS On Xbox One S / X!!

Mass Effect Legendary Edition seems like it’s going to scale well across all consoles.

BioWare has detailed the framerate and resolution targets for Mass Effect Legendary Edition across all consoles. For starters, the game will offer two modes: one priorities visual quality and the other framerate.

The two modes will be available on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – though with varying targets. One thing worth highlighting is that Xbox Series X is currently the only console with support for up 120fps.

Although Xbox Series X is comparable in power to the PS5, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is likely not a native PS5 app, meaning it is limited to PS4 Pro targets. Xbox, of course, does not have this distinction, which allows games to deliver performance befitting of every console.

BioWare also confirmed that PC players will be able to run the game at up to 240fps, and tweak individual graphic settings to fine tune the output.

We’ve broken the two modes down into an easy-to-digest list below.

What Is Gaming At 120hz

Previously, only PC gamers were happily crowing about 120Hz or 120 frames per second gaming, via DisplayPort connections. But while the previous generation of consoles maxed out at 60Hz over HDMI 2.0, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles have the capability to output at 120Hz at both 1080p and 4K over HDMI 2.1, when games support it. Put simply, this means smoother, flowing visuals as the TV refreshes faster. But obviously this requires a TV that can receive that HDMI signal, and a panel that can keep up.

Put simply, a console outputting at 60Hz means that the image refreshes 60 times per second. A 120Hz output means 120 refreshes per second, so we see clearer and smoother motion with these speedier frame rates. This makes animations look more life-like and more detailed, because more information is being fed to our brains. All video is a series of still images, and our brains fill in the gaps between them. If you have more images per second, the brain doesn’t have to fill as much in, and there’s less motion blur it means you can really see what’s happening more, and you have less of that feeling that you’re watching something artificial. It becomes more natural-looking.

This video uses slow-mo to showcase the differences, even if you’re reading this on a monitor that can’t show 120Hz video:

Both new generation consoles make it easy to see what your TV can handle. On PS5 this means heading into the PS5s settings and then Screen and Video From here you can go into the top option of Video Output and youll see what you are currently set to. If your resolution and 4K video transfer rate are both set to Auto and you can see 3140 x 2160 – 120Hz at the top, congratulations, youve got a compatible HDMI 2.1 display. If you dont have 120Hz at 4K, but still have a 4K TV, youll have 2160p resolution at 60Hz and be able to see all of the compatible frame rates in the Screen and Video section.

Given that 120Hz at 4K gaming is so new and throws HDR into the mix too, there are still a few teething problems with certain compatible televisions. Samsung TVs are awaiting a software update to make sure they work with PS5 and on the PlayStation support page is the following statement:

The PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output. On the other hand, 4K 120Hz TVs have not yet fully penetrated the market. Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with TV companies to find and solve problems during this transition period, but for the time being, players may experience some issues with 4K 120Hz.

Tip: another way to boost your experience on Sony’s next-gen console is by buying one of the best PS5 SSDs – you’ll get more storage and better speeds.
