How to Play Game Discs on the DISCLESS XBOX ONE S!!

Like Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West takes place in a distant future version of the USA. As the sequel’s name implies, it brings Aloy to a different part of the country as she heads west. This means we’re heading to what remains of Utah, Nevada, and California, and we know for a fact that Aloy will explore the ruins of San Francisco.

Horizon Zero Dawn mostly took place in what we know as Colorado and Utah, with many real-world buildings and landmarks included on the map, so we expect a similarly well-observed open world in Forbidden West.

Do Discs Take Up Less Space On Xbox One

No, you cannot use an external disc drive to play physical games on the Xbox Series S. If you bought an external disc drive, it would not be able to connect to your console. The Xbox Series S is an all-digital gaming console for disc-free gaming. Disc-based games are not compatible with Xbox Series S.

Whats The Point Of An Xbox Series S If It Wont Play Discs

Backwards compatibility has been a really strong feature of Microsofts Xbox strategy. So it may feel a little jarring that they have developed a console that wont let you play your old discs. But thats not really the goal with this console.

The Series S has all the same support and functionality as its bigger, higher-spec sibling. This means that all the supported games from Xbox One, Xbox 360 and even the original Xbox, are available. And this really is the key.

Will My Old Discs Work On Xbox Series S

Do FAULTY Discs still work on Xbox One Backward Compatibility?

We’ll get this one out of the way first as it’s the simpler answer – no! The key thing to know about the Xbox Series S before you buy it is that there’s no physical disc drive whatsoever, which means that you’ll have no way at all of running games from your discs on the new compact console.

That means that if you have a big library of Xbox One games on disc that you know you’ll be wanting to dip back into fairly regularly, it might not end up being the best choice for you as a next-generation machine.

Physical Vs Digital Media

While the core gameplay experience is identical across the Xbox One S and Xbox One S All-Digital, the key difference is that youre limited to digital downloads on the newer console. Youre cutting ties not only to physical Xbox One games, but older Xbox 360 backwards-compatible games, DVDs and Blu-ray too.

While that makes the console cheaper initially, it may work out more expensive down the line as youre forced to rely solely on the Microsoft Store and thats not always the cheapest place to buy games. Games, even at launch, are cheaper to buy physically than digitally, with differences of up to £15/$20 depending on the retailer and game.

The battle of physical vs digital media isnt new, and there are pros and cons to each. While physical discs can be cheaper, they also create a lot of clutter in the home especially as your library increases over time. Thats not an issue with digital games, which are all neat and tidy in your digital game library awaiting a download.

Youve also got a range of subscription services including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Games with Gold and EA Access that provide a wide range of games for a relatively trivial amount each month, negating the costly need to buy each game individually. Youll also get a copy of Sea of Thieves, Minecraft and Forza Horizon 3 with every All-Digital console to get your library started.

Microsoft Still Believes In Discs

It’s not like disc-based media is going away yet, either. Microsoft’s Jeff Gattis even admits he doesn’t see the disc going away. And Microsoft still has two other Xbox One systems that use discs. If you’re buying the All-Digital version, you’re basically depriving yourself of a way to play games. Maybe Microsoft will make a hard switch and go disc-free with a future Xbox, or even move to more game streaming. But the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition isn’t that system.

Hello VideoFuzzball30,

Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. We understand that your console’s disc drive is not accepting discs unless you press the eject button, and it is attempting to take in a disc even though a disc is not being inserted into the console. We recommendpower cycling the console by holding down the power button on the console for ten seconds. Once the console has been shut down, you can unplug the device from the power outlet for one minute. Make sure the console is plugged directly into the wall instead of a surge protector. If this does not resolve the issue, the issue may be attributed to a hardware malfunction that must be investigated. You would need tocreate a repair for the device. Be sure to let us know the results!

Xbox One S – Get Your Stuck Disc Out – Manual Eject

Sometimes due to the DVD region or just a simple accident, you wont get the Blu-Ray App prompt when inserting a DVD. In this case, you need to install the App directly from Xbox Home which thankfully is no issue at all.

  • Take your control and press the Xbox button to open the guide menu.
  • From this menu make sure to choose Home and then Store.
  • If for some reason the Store button doesnt appear scroll down and check under See All Suggestions sometimes the Store menu can be far in the list.
  • Once you are in the store go to the Search bar and search for the Blu-Ray App.
  • Just like in the previous case all you need to do is press on Get and wait for the installation to be done.
  • Once again as soon as its installed all DVDs should play just by inserting them.

Xbox Series S: A Digital Future

The Series S forces users to move away from disc-based gaming to a purely digital platform. But it isnt just about coaxing people to buy games digitally its about encouraging users to move away from buying individual titles and switching to a subscription-based model, such as Xbox Live Gold, or Game Pass Ultimate.

Given the relatively low price point of the console, you could have months, if not years, of subscription-based gaming before your spending is the equivalent of the Series X plus additional games. And Game Pass really is a pretty compelling proposition.

If you’ve picked up the Xbox One S on Black Friday, you’ll want to check which version you have before buying games to play on it.

Have you picked up an Xbox One S All-Digital Edition on Black Friday? Well done you, the console is a great piece of kit with a robust software library.

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition is a revised version of the original Xbox, squeezing almost everything into a smaller box.

We say almost because there’s one key omission – the disc drive. The All-Digital Edition doesn’t have a disc drive, so you can’t put games, DVDs or Blu-Rays into it – but don’t panic.

While physical media can’t be used with the console, you can download games and movies from the Xbox Store – and stream Netflix, Prime Video and more in 4K.

You can also use Xbox Game Pass, a service that offers an all-you-can-play buffet of over one hundred video games – and the first month is available for just £1.

That means you can jump into huge exclusives like Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, and the Halo Master Chief Collection for just £1 – along with dozens of third-party titles, too.
