Do You Need Xbox Live Gold To Play ‘fortnite’ On Xbox Consoles

Fortnite is a free-to-play game, relying heavily on an internet connection to play with other players. Most consoles require players to purchase an online membership before you can access a title’s online multiplayer features and for a long time, that was the case for Fortnite as well, despite free-to-play games being available for no additional cost on other consoles.

Luckily, this is no longer the case, meaning you don’t need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play with your friends online. As a free-to-play game, all you need is to download the most recent version onto your Xbox Series S/X or Xbox One console and ensure you have a reliable internet connection .

This didn’t used to be the case for Xbox players up until April 2021, all Xbox profiles needed an active Xbox Live Gold membership to play any and all free-to-play games. The subscription cost $10 a month, or $60 for a year, but this still created a barrier for some players.

Chapter 2 Season 4 Storyline

The story in Fortnite has always been extremely bizarre and inventive. But it is undoubtedly one of the most appealing aspects of the game and what makes it one of the most interesting Battle Royale games to date.

In the build-up to Season 3, Midas activated the Device which changed the surrounding Storm into a tsunami. The Tsunami engulfed the island in water and flooded major locations on the map, destroying the Agency.

This was overtaken by A.L.T.E.R/SHADOW with E.G.O/GHOST fleeing and starting a rebellion at the new Fortilla POI.

As the season has progressed, cameo appearances from Aquaman, Balck Manta, Captain America and Blakebeard arrive as well as the water levels decrease.

A new underwater castle called Coral Castle appears and a spaceship after the water depletes even further. The spaceship blasts off after players completed the corresponding challenges but crash-lands at Weeping Woods.

Moving into Season 4, the story sees Thor teleport many popular Marvel heroes to the island in order to stop Galactus from consuming the map.

Recognisable Marvel locations are now appearing around the map via rifts, as well as beacons now activating to teleport other famous landmarks to the island.

Galactus is now getting closer to the island and can be seen in the sky.

Hightower Event

After being decrypted in the most recent Fortnite patch, it’s still unknown whether ‘Hightower‘ is a codename or the official name for the new live event.

How Can You Play Fortnite Without Xbox Live Gold

You previously needed an active Xbox Live Gold subscription to play Fortnite, as well as a range of other free-to-play games, online, on your Xbox. This is because you needed a subscription to use online multiplayer features on the Xbox network, even for games that are free to play.

This was, suffice to say, rather silly. Especially when Microsoft’s console rivals, Sony and Nintendo, both let you play free-to-play games online without paying for the privilege.

Both of these companies have Fortnite on their consoles, both of them have a paid-for online multiplayer service, and yet both of them allowed people without memberships to play Fortnite online.

Which is probably why Microsoft finally relented and allowed people to play free-to-play games without Xbox Live Gold. Yes, that means all free-to-play games are available without an Xbox Live Gold subscription, not just Fortnite.

This move is just one of many boons for free players. For instance, you can now also use Xbox Party Chat without a membership, meaning you can talk online for free.

The popular battle royale is free to play for PC players, but Xbox players will find the online features locked behind subscriptions.

Image via Epic Games

Fortnite is free to play, right? Not necessarily on all platforms. While its officially free to play on PC from the Epic Games Store, players on Xbox must have an Xbox Live subscription to access multiplayer in Fortnite.

Xbox locks its online multiplayer content behind Xbox Live Gold. There are two tiers to Xbox Live: free and Gold. If youre looking to play online, youre going to need to pay for that Gold membership. There are a few other upgrades available, including the Game Pass and Ultimate, but if you only want to go online to play with friends, Xbox Live Gold is the cheapest option.

Sony, on the other hand, does not require PlayStation Plus, the Sony equivalent of Xbox Live, to play Fortnite multiplayer. Similarly, Nintendo also doesnt charge its players a fee to play with their friends in Fortnite on Switch. Nintendo does have a subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online, but Fortnite remains free to play even without it.

Xbox Live Gold Is Not Needed To Play Fortnite Multiplayer For A Limited Time

Microsoft has waived the need for Xbox Live Gold for online multiplayer this weekend.

Beginning today Xbox Live members will not need a Gold membership to enjoy online multiplayer.

This is made possible through Xboxs Free Play Days for All event which begins today and runs through February 3.

Xbox Live Gold is currently required to play Fortnite online so this will be a great time for those without a membership to jump in.

While a Battle Pass would help you get the most bang for your buck in Fortnite it is totally playable for free.

Fortnite is fully cross-play with all platforms, including PS4, so this will also allow Xbox players to play with friends on other platforms.

Now is a great time to jump into Fortnite as were gearing up for a special Marshmello concert.

The 5 Most Hated Skins In Fortnite

Xbox Live Gold Sharing for Fortnite How to Play Fortnite Without Xbox Live Gold

The Fortnite community is no fan of these skins.

Fortnite skins have taken on a life of their own since the game came out. Back in the early days, we couldnt imagine spending money on a free game. Now, hundreds of dollars later, were still padding our lockers as collectors of in-game cosmetics.

Some skins tell a lot about the player wearing them. A Peely? Theyre just trying to goof around and have some fun. A Dynamo? Sweat is probably pouring onto their keyboard at all times.

Today, were taking a look at the most hated skins in Fortnite the skins that elicit an immediate reaction from opponents. You better be ready for some backlash if you post a clip while wearing one of these skins.

Xbox Live Gold No Longer Needed To Play Fortnite Warzone Or Roblox

Free-to-play games are now actually free on Xbox One and Series X/S, as Microsoft finally remove the need to have Xbox Live Gold.

Its a loophole that has persisted for years but up until now if you wanted to play free-to-play multiplayer games such as Fortnite and Call Of Duty: Warzone on Xbox then you still had to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription to do so.

Finally though, that is no longer the case and those two games, and more than 50 others, are now genuinely free to play on all Xbox formats.

Not even Nintendo charges for free-to-play games but now, as of April 21, theyre all completely free on all three console formats.

The news was announced last month but still might not have happened if Microsoft had not recently got itself into a PR blunder by trying to raise the price of Xbox Live Gold during the middle of lockdown.

Making free-to-play games free seems to have been offered as an apology for that move, although most gamers consider it long overdue.

Yes you need Xbox Live in order to play Fortnite, since the game requires constant online connection.

I would think so since its an online game, but I use Microsoft/bing rewards to earn enough points to get a free 1 month xbox live gift code each month, you can earn up to 250 points a day and a gift card/code is 5600 points currently.

You Do Need An Account Though

Although Fortnite is free to play on Xbox, you will still need an Xbox Live account.

This doesn’t need a paid subscription, but you need the Xbox account in order to add Fortnite to your library and download it to your console.

It also, much like an Epic Games account would, allows you to keep all your progress and any purchases.
