What Is Xbox Live Gold
Xbox Live Gold is Microsofts online gaming subscription service for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Its required to play online multiplayer games. Whether youre playing a co-operative game with a single friend over the Internet, or youre playing a competitive multiplayer game with a bunch of people you dont know online, you need Xbox Live Gold to do it.
Microsoft has also added some additional features to this service. Xbox Live Gold members get a few free games every month, and they also get access to members-only sales on some digital games.
Xbox Live Gold No Longer Required For Online Free To Play Games
As announced in March, Microsoft has finally removed the necessity for Xbox Live Gold to play certain Free to Play online games. Thats right, for popular titles such as Fortnite, Roblox, Apex Legends and many more, players now no longer require to pay anything extra. Free-to-Play now truly means Free to Play.
Many fans are overjoyed at this news, responding positively to the announcements on Twitter. Some players even stated that they only have a Gold Membership to play games such as SMITE, as seen in the responses to the tweet below.
Starting TODAY, you will no longer need a paid Live subscription to play SMITE and the rest of ‘ games!
Who’s ready to enter the Battleground of the Gods?!?
Microsoft made an announcement earlier this year, stating that the price for a Gold Membership would be doubling in price. People quickly responded negatively to the news, leading them to revoke the decision. This led to the announcement that Free to Play games would no longer require membership whatsoever. Finally, it has been released for all players.
Depends On The Online Multiplayer Games You Play
The answer to that question depends on what kind of multiplayer games a player is into. As previously mentioned, all free-to-play online games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which includes titles such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Roblox, and to name a few. However, it is worth noting that other online games that require an upfront purchase would still require players to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription. It is worth noting that the removal of the paywall for most free-to-play online games is something that PS Plus players already enjoy, which is why this decision is definitely good news to players on Xbox consoles. But now that free-to-play games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, what else is the service for?

Do You Need Ps Plus Or Xbox Live Gold To Play Gta Online
If you are a PlayStation 4 or 5 owner, then at the time of writing, you will still need an active PS Plus subscription, in order to access the game. While there are some multiplayer games which dont require a subscription to play, such as Apex Legends or Fortnite, GTA Online is not part of that list. When the new standalone version of the game is released, it will be interesting to see whether players will be expected to start paying for it after the free 3 month period expires.
On Xbox, the situation is a little more complicated. A few months ago, to access online play required players to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, even if they were free-to-play. However, following a backlash to a planned price hike, Microsoft actually lurched in the opposite direction. After that, they decided to make free-to-play games available without Xbox Live Gold. Sadly however, the game is not included on Microsofts list of free-to-play Xbox games.
Whats The Difference Between Xbox Live And Xbox Game Pass
Microsoft is dropping Xbox Live branding, referring to the set of software and services as simply the Xbox network now. The company has also been convincing its loyal base of Xbox Live Gold subscribers to migrate over to Xbox Game Pass, a subscription service with more than 100 games that is Microsofts main focus for its plans for gaming.
Is Gta Online Free
The answer to this question is also slightly more complicated than a simple yes or no. GTA Online doesnt require players to pay to access it specifically. So in one sense, it is free-to-play. However, in order to be able to play it, you need to have purchased a copy of GTA V. In addition, as weve already established, neither Sony nor Microsoft allow players access to the game, unless they pay for an online subscription. So in another, possibly more accurate sense, its not free-to-play.
Ultimately, if you want to access GTA Online, and there are plenty of good reasons for doing so, then youre going to need to pay for it. We are still waiting details on the standalone version of the game that is coming out later this year. We dont yet know whether it will remain free-to-play after 3 months, or if it will return behind a subscription charge. But well continue to update you, as soon as we know more.

Xbox Live Gold Changes: What’s New For 2021
Microsoft just rolled out the biggest changes to Xbox Live Gold since launch, in turn shaking up the value proposition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners. The drastic policy shift changes up a subscription that’s gone untouched in years, now opening previously paid features to any Xbox console owner. That chiefly includes dropping the Xbox Live Gold requirement on free-to-play multiplayer titles, plus opening multiple social features to all on Xbox.
Xbox consoles have required an Xbox Live Gold membership to access online multiplayer since their inception, but changes introduced this April drop that mandate for free-to-play games. You no longer need to pay the monthly fee on many popular titles, including Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends, to name a few. While all paid Xbox games still require Xbox Live Gold, those with zero-cost entry are now entirely free on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
The platform has also lifted the Xbox Live Gold requirement on Party Chat and Looking for Group on Xbox consoles, two popular social features for multiplayer. The former, Microsoft’s staple voice chat system for Xbox, finally goes free and opens communication among all players. The LFG system also provides a platform to search for teammates and like-minded players across the Xbox network, filtering users by game and various social preferences.
Yes If You Care About Xbox Games With Gold
According to Microsoft’s official page for Xbox Live Gold, paid online games such as Borderlands 3, Mortal Kombat 11, and more still requires an active subscription to Xbox Live Gold for online multiplayer. For players who are fond of paid online games, an Xbox Live Gold subscription is still a requirement. Additionally, the Xbox Live Gold service is still essential for those who anticipate its monthly free games, especially now that Microsoft is upping its game for its roster of Games with Gold. After the company announced the list of free games for February, some players were surprised with Microsoft’s selection of games, especially since it includes heavy hitters such as Gears 5 and Resident Evil. The former is the Xbox Series X optimized version of the game.
Although it is too early to tell whether Microsoft will remain consistent with offering quality games for Xbox Live Gold, it is apparent that February’s roster is off to a great start. It also appears that Microsoft will start offering Xbox Series X games to the roster, similar to Sony’s PS Plus, which began adding PS5 games to the service. Overall, it appears that Microsoft is committed to ensuring that Xbox players remain subscribed to Xbox Live Gold by increasing the overall value of the service by offering high quality monthly free games.

Keep An Eye Out For Free Trials
If youre still on the fence, Microsoft sometimes offers free trials of Xbox Live Gold with new consoles and some games. You may see a Try Gold For Free promotion for some free Xbox Live Gold time on your console, or you may have received a prepaid code you can redeem for trail time bundled with a game or console. However, theres no simple way to get a trial if your console doesnt offer one to you and you dont have a prepaid code. Youll need to sign up for the paid subscription instead.
When purchased from Microsoft, Xbox Live Gold costs $10 per month, $25 per three months , or $60 per year . If you plan on sticking with it for the long haul, the yearly subscription is the best dealalthough you cant cancel it and get your money back during the year youve paid for. Thats the catch.
Overall, Xbox Live Gold certainly seems like a more valuable service than Microsofts separate Xbox Game Pass subscription, which costs $10 per month. It offers no discount for buying more time, still requires a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription to play games offline, and offers access to a library of games that includes many games that were previously offered for free via Games for Gold in the past.
You Can Now Play Fortnite On Your Xbox With Or Without Xbox Live Gold
People without Xbox Live Gold memberships used to be locked out of online free-to-play games, despite the games themselves being free. However, Microsoft has changed its stance, likely because of competition from its rival consoles.
So, if you own an Xbox and have never played Fortnite, now is a good time to give it a shot. It can be a little overwhelming at first, so be sure to read up on the controls and best practices before you hop in.

Is The Cost Of Xbox Live Gold Increasing
No while Microsoft previously outlined plans to increase the cost of its Xbox Live Gold membership, the company changed course following widespread backlash among users. The price of Xbox Live Gold would double for many under the proposed changes, changing to $60 for six months versus the previous $60 12-month subscription. Xbox Live Gold members on a per-month payment would also see their plans increase $1 per month, at $11 per month. This adjustment is no longer planned.
Microsoft first detailed plans to change Xbox Live Gold pricing back in January, citing “changes in regional marketplaces,” and increased investments in the Xbox network. The negative response saw it backtrack less than 24 hours later, with no planned changes to the value of Gold. It also used the opportunity to announce changes around free-to-play titles, which set work in motion over the following months.
While Xbox Live Gold pricing could increase later, Microsoft remains committed to current prices, at least right now. That further distances the subscription from the all-inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier, currently costing $15 monthly or $180 a year, including Xbox Live Gold alongside other benefits across the platform.
Xbox Live Gold: What’s Not Good In 2021
While Xbox Live Gold delivers upon all its promises, unlocking the full multiplayer experience on Xbox consoles, the subscription has its shortcomings. For some, it’s the concept of paid multiplayer, whereas free online gaming is an overlooked luxury for many on PC. But the subscription’s current offering has also fallen under scrutiny, especially in light of the recent changes to free-to-play gaming.
While paying for online multiplayer has proven the norm for Xbox, that’s not to say it’s dodged heavy scrutiny at times. According to reputable reports, Microsoft even looked to phase out paid multiplayer back in 2019, as Xbox Game Pass takes the spotlight moving forward. The recent tweaks to free-to-play multiplayer have since materialized in a move that, for some players, could eliminate the need for Xbox Live Gold.
Free-to-play games now make up some of the most popular Xbox games like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends. There’s a valid argument to cancel your Xbox Live Gold subscription if among those only using a console for those no-cost titles. That hugely restricts which experiences you can play, but it’s an ideal way to save on your upgoing gaming costs.

Is Xbox Live Gold Worth It In 2021
These latest changes to Xbox Live Gold represent its biggest evolution since its launch on the original Xbox, leaving some to question whether they need the subscription in 2021. It’s fair to say there’s less reason to purchase the membership after these changes, with previous member-only benefits now freely available on the consoles. But Xbox Live Gold still plays a crucial role, underpinning the online multiplayer for all other titles on the platform.
For those who exclusively play Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, or other free-to-play games on Xbox, these changes could net some savings on that monthly cost. These top titles can all be played subscription-free, coupled with free Party Chat access to communicate with friends. But straying beyond the small pool of free games, Xbox Live Gold is essential for online multiplayer. That’s a decision unique to you but worth consideration following the switch-up.
Xbox Live Gold
Xbox Live Gold remains Microsoft’s go-to subscription for multiplayer gaming on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Upcoming changes allow you to play free-to-play games online without a subscription, but with the requirement still in place for other titles.
$10 Per Month Or $60 Per Year
Xbox Live Gold is the online subscription service that started in 2002 for the original Xbox, and it allowed players to play multiplayer games online with voice chat. Since then it has offered more benefits such as special discounts and four free games monthly. A subscription for Xbox Live Gold costs $10 per month .
Adding to the nomenclature confusion: The online network has heretofore been known as Xbox Live, but will soon be changing its name to “Xbox network.” But it appears that Xbox Live Gold isn’t going anywhere.
For now, you need Xbox Live Gold to play any online multiplayer games. But recently, it appears Microsoft might change the rules to allow Xbox gamers to play free-to-play games online such as Fortnite and Apex Legends.
But here’s the important takeaway: Xbox Game Pass includes Xbox Live Gold, and adds access to dozens of games, too. Anyone interested in Gold should check out Game Pass first.

Xbox Live Gold Changes: Free
Two decades on, and Xbox Live remains a staple of Microsoft’s gaming efforts, fundamental to its Xbox home consoles, and touching PCs and mobile too. That’s coupled with its long-running Xbox Live Gold subscription, a monthly membership unlocking its full suite of online features, including multiplayer, party chats, and exclusive bonuses. But the gaming network, and Xbox Live Gold, have undergone a significant revamp, laying out wide-reaching changes for all.
Here’s what’s just changed with Xbox Live and Xbox Live Gold in 2021.
Do You Need Xbox Live Gold To Play ‘fortnite’ On Xbox Consoles
Fortnite is a free-to-play game, relying heavily on an internet connection to play with other players. Most consoles require players to purchase an online membership before you can access a title’s online multiplayer features and for a long time, that was the case for Fortnite as well, despite free-to-play games being available for no additional cost on other consoles.
Luckily, this is no longer the case, meaning you don’t need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play with your friends online. As a free-to-play game, all you need is to download the most recent version onto your Xbox Series S/X or Xbox One console and ensure you have a reliable internet connection .
This didn’t used to be the case for Xbox players up until April 2021, all Xbox profiles needed an active Xbox Live Gold membership to play any and all free-to-play games. The subscription cost $10 a month, or $60 for a year, but this still created a barrier for some players.

Can I Get Xbox Live Gold For Free
In a sense, yes. If you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, then this includes a free membership to Xbox Live Gold in addition to everything else it offers.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate comes with a growing library of over 100+ games that you can play at no additional charge beyond the membership price. These rotate in and out so they wont always be the same. But you can play them on your Windows 10 PC or on your console. And if you have an Android smartphone or tablet, you can even play them through the cloud on those devices.
On top of all that, you also get discounts and other perks. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate does cost more though. As its $14.99 per month. However you can get the first three months for $1 if youre a first-time subscriber.
