How Does Games With Gold Work
Every month, Microsoft offers several free games through its Games With Gold service. While these games are availablefor the entire month or just for two weeks, depending on the gameyou can choose to redeem them via the website or on your Xbox console. You can then downloadand keepthe game for free.
If you dont redeem the game during its free time period, you dont get it for free. This means you wont get any of the previous Games With Gold for free when you subscribe. It also means that, if you dont stay on top of the free game offers, youll miss some games and wont get them for free. However, people who have been members for a long time may have libraries full of hundreds of games they got for free, if theyre diligent.
On an Xbox One, once youve redeemed a free game, you can download and play it whenever you like, foreveras long as you have an active subscription. If your subscription lapses, you wont be able to play the game anymore. If you restart your subscription, youll regain access to all the games you previously redeemed.
On an Xbox 360, once youre redeemed a free game, its yours to play forevereven if your subscription lapses.
Xbox Live Gold No Longer Required For Online Free To Play Games
As announced in March, Microsoft has finally removed the necessity for Xbox Live Gold to play certain Free to Play online games. Thats right, for popular titles such as Fortnite, Roblox, Apex Legends and many more, players now no longer require to pay anything extra. Free-to-Play now truly means Free to Play.
Many fans are overjoyed at this news, responding positively to the announcements on Twitter. Some players even stated that they only have a Gold Membership to play games such as SMITE, as seen in the responses to the tweet below.
Starting TODAY, you will no longer need a paid Live subscription to play SMITE and the rest of ‘ games!
Who’s ready to enter the Battleground of the Gods?!?
Microsoft made an announcement earlier this year, stating that the price for a Gold Membership would be doubling in price. People quickly responded negatively to the news, leading them to revoke the decision. This led to the announcement that Free to Play games would no longer require membership whatsoever. Finally, it has been released for all players.
Depends On The Online Multiplayer Games You Play
The answer to that question depends on what kind of multiplayer games a player is into. As previously mentioned, all free-to-play online games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which includes titles such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Roblox, and to name a few. However, it is worth noting that other online games that require an upfront purchase would still require players to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription. It is worth noting that the removal of the paywall for most free-to-play online games is something that PS Plus players already enjoy, which is why this decision is definitely good news to players on Xbox consoles. But now that free-to-play games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, what else is the service for?

Xbox Game Pass For Pc Doesn’t Require Xbox Live Gold For Online Play
One of the biggest highlights of Microsofts Xbox E3 2019 Briefing was the official reveal and release of the Xbox Game Pass for PC, a subsription service for a digital trove of games made available by Microsoft and rotated monthly.
Its an interesting move for the tech giant that made its name for gaming by focusing on consoles, and an overall contrasting take considering that Epic is trying to bring exclusivity to the platform while Microsoft is actively seeking to unite it. Plus, it launched with the insane price of one dollar, which is incredible when you take a look at the available library.
That said, there were a lot of questions regarding bringing a service created for consoles to a platform like the PC. Mashable has for the most part articulated one of the biggest concerns in an article, which is the necessity for live service for the Xbox Game Pass for PC.
Its a good question, one that was answered by program manager for Xbox Game Pass Jason Beaumont during E3 2019. When asked if PC players can expect to sign up for Xbox Live Gold to be able to play multiplayer games on Xbox Game Pass for PC, he had this to say:
“No, absolutely not,” Beaumont said. “You can also buy a standalone PC Game Pass which gives you the content of 100-plus games on PC. If they have multiplayer, they have multiplayer we’re not asking for you to have Gold as well. In fact, the social features like having all of my Xbox Live friends, that’s built in whether or not you have Gold.”
Xbox Live Gold: Price And Availability
Xbox Live Gold is available as a monthly subscription for $9.99 per month in the U.S. and over 40 additional territories. It’s also available in upfront installments for savings on the usual monthly rate, priced at $24.99 for three months, $39.99 for six months. Xbox Live Gold is available through a 12-month prepaid membership for $59.99 via third-party retailers like Amazon, GameStop, and Walmart, although no longer through Microsoft. This tiered pricing structure makes it better to purchase Xbox Live Gold in bulk upfront, over the monthly fee.
Microsoft’s all-inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription includes Xbox Live Gold, too, coupled with Xbox Game Pass for console and PC, cloud gaming on mobile, and other perks like EA Play. The subscription is available for a flat $14.99 monthly rate in the U.S.
While Microsoft outlined plans to increase Xbox Live Gold pricing back in January 2021, it later reversed the decision following widespread backlash.

Is The Cost Of Xbox Live Gold Increasing
No while Microsoft previously outlined plans to increase the cost of its Xbox Live Gold membership, the company changed course following widespread backlash among users. The price of Xbox Live Gold would double for many under the proposed changes, changing to $60 for six months versus the previous $60 12-month subscription. Xbox Live Gold members on a per-month payment would also see their plans increase $1 per month, at $11 per month. This adjustment is no longer planned.
Microsoft first detailed plans to change Xbox Live Gold pricing back in January, citing “changes in regional marketplaces,” and increased investments in the Xbox network. The negative response saw it backtrack less than 24 hours later, with no planned changes to the value of Gold. It also used the opportunity to announce changes around free-to-play titles, which set work in motion over the following months.
While Xbox Live Gold pricing could increase later, Microsoft remains committed to current prices, at least right now. That further distances the subscription from the all-inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier, currently costing $15 monthly or $180 a year, including Xbox Live Gold alongside other benefits across the platform.
Is Xbox Live Gold Worth It In 2021
These latest changes to Xbox Live Gold represent its biggest evolution since its launch on the original Xbox, leaving some to question whether they need the subscription in 2021. It’s fair to say there’s less reason to purchase the membership after these changes, with previous member-only benefits now freely available on the consoles. But Xbox Live Gold still plays a crucial role, underpinning the online multiplayer for all other titles on the platform.
For those who exclusively play Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, or other free-to-play games on Xbox, these changes could net some savings on that monthly cost. These top titles can all be played subscription-free, coupled with free Party Chat access to communicate with friends. But straying beyond the small pool of free games, Xbox Live Gold is essential for online multiplayer. That’s a decision unique to you but worth consideration following the switch-up.

Xbox Is Still Planning To Drop Live Gold Its Claimed
Microsoft said to be waiting until Game Pass reaches milestone subs
Thats according to journalist Jeff Grubb, who had made the same claim last year when Xbox Live Gold was still required for free-to-play games.
Grubbs original argument was that since Halo Infinites multiplayer was going to be free-to-play, that would only make sense if Xbox Live Gold was removed.
However, Microsoft then announced in April that Xbox Live Gold was no longer required to play free-to-play multiplayer games, leading some to believe that Gold would remain as a requirement for other games.
Yesterday, during his premium GrubbSnax show on Giant Bomb, Grubb addressed the story again and stated his belief that the plans to drop Gold were still on the table at Xbox.
In the past, Ive said Xbox Live Gold is going to go away, and when I started saying that it was when Xbox Live Gold was still required for free-to-play games, he explained.
And I knew for a fact that they were going to make a change before Halo Infinite, and I thought at least it would be dropped for free-to-play games because they werent going to charge people to play Halo on Xbox when they werent charging you to play it on PC or whatever.
Then they decided to raise the price and it looked weird, right? Why would they do that if they were going to get rid of Xbox Live Gold?
