How Many Media Discs Work On The Xbox One?

ByIain Wilson10 November 2020

From original Xbox games to Ultra HD Blu-rays, these are all the discs you can use with Xbox Series X

Although you now have a next generation console in your hands, knowing what discs work in an Xbox Series X opens up a huge back catalogue of gaming spanning back almost two decades, as well as a variety of entertainment experiences on different media. This means that now you’ve been able to buy the Xbox Series X you can easily revisit old favourites you still have in your collection, or try out classic games you may have missed out on the first time around, as long as you have the disc in your possession. If you want to know exactly what discs work in an Xbox Series X, then read on for details of everything that’s compatible and how you use them.

Note that the Xbox Series S is a digital console with no disc drive, and is not compatible with external disc drives so you cannot use discs with that console.

Does It Work With Xbox Games I Bought Through Xbox Store

Xbox backward compatibility works with digital content as well as disc games. In fact, if you enter a supported disc into your Xbox One or Series X, the machine will download the game from the Xbox store first – although you will need the disc to be in the machine each time you play. This cannot work on an Xbox One S All-digital Edition or Xbox Series S, of course, as they do not feature disc drives.

If you own a digital copy of a supported game it appears in your games list ready for download. Check your My Games & Apps hub to see if any are listed among the games yet to be installed.

Will My Old Discs Work On Xbox Series X

This side of the question is a little more complicated. Microsoft made it clear from a very early stage that the Xbox Series X supports a massive degree of backward compatibility for older Xbox games, especially those for Xbox One.

With a 4K Blu-ray drive on board as part of the hardware, that means that you’ve got an extremely high chance of your Xbox One discs working without any hassle on your Xbox Series X, and in fact benefitting from potentially faster loading times and superior performance as a result of the upgraded hardware.

    There are only a few wrinkles here. Microsoft explained earlier this year that one area of complexity surrounds Kinect, its ill-fated exploration of motion-sensing. If you want to play a game that relies on Kinect, you’re out of luck – the Xbox Series X doesn’t support the peripheral, which means the game won’t work.;

It’s also a little more complicated when it comes to older discs, from the Xbox 360 era, some of which are supported, but in the absence of a final list of these games we can’t be certain which ones work. However, it’s relatively safe bet that discs that work in your Xbox One should be happy with your Xbox Series X, too.

How To Install And Play An Xbox 360 Game On Your Xbox One

What Happens When you put a Xbox 360 game into a Xbox One X

If you dont have a game you want to play yet, there are two ways to get one. First, you can acquire a physical copy of the game. This can be either a new copy or a used copy, so you may be able to find a good deal on a website like eBay or Amazon .

Used copies work well;because the Xbox One doesnt actually play the game from the disc. The Xbox One just needs to check the disc and verify what it is. The actual game is downloaded from Microsofts servers and run from your Xbox Ones hard drive. As long as the Xbox One can recognize the disc, youre fine.

Once you have the disc, insert it into your Xbox One. The Xbox One will tell you it needs to download an update for the game. Its really downloading the entire ported version of the game.

When its done, you just have to launch the game like you would any other. The Xbox One will need the games disc in its disc drive while you play it to confirm you do indeed own the game, but the game will actually run from the Xbox Ones internal drive;and not the disc.

You can also purchase digital copies of Xbox 360 games;from Microsofts Xbox store. If you already own a digital copy of the game, youll find it available for installation on your Xbox One alongside any normal;Xbox One games you have. Head to My Games and Apps > Ready to Install to see games and apps you can install.

Xbox Series Backwards Compatibility: What Are The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Improvements On Xbox Series X And Xbox Series S

11 x Xbox One Disc Only Bundle

As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals in what Microsoft describes as “our most powerful and compatible console ever”.

In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: “It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.”

Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:

    • Backwards compatible games will run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, offering potentially higher framerates and resolutions, plus “significant reductions” in load times using the SSD. In early Digital Foundry tests, it offers “up to double the performance in the most demanding games”.
    • “Select titles” can have framerate doubled, going from 30fps to 60fps, or 60fps to 120fps.
    • HDR will be supported across backwards compatible games thanks to a “reconstruction technique”, even going back to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
    • All titles will support Quick Resume, a system-wide feature which allows you to stop progress of multiple games and continue playing them later.

In May 2020, there was also the final tease from director of project management Jason Ronald that there are more games to come: “The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program.”

How To Play Xbox 360 And Original Xbox Games On An Xbox One

Backwards compatibility on the Xbox one relies on emulation. What that means is the Xbox One doesn’t have the hardware components required to run games from previous generations, so it uses software.

Instead of running your disc-based games through an emulator, Microsoft has taken a slightly different route. Each backwards compatible game has been tweaked, packaged with an emulator, and made available for download.

When you insert a backwards compatible game into an Xbox One, your console verifies the identity of the disc and then provides you with the option to download an update. This update is actually the entire game packaged with an emulator.

Even though Xbox One backwards compatibility requires you to download a modified version of each game you want to play, and you don’t actually play the game on your physical game disc, you still need to have the disc inserted.

Microsoft uses this as a sort of protection to make sure that you actually own the disc, and to prevent you from downloading a backwards compatible copy to your console and then selling the physical disc.

If you have any backwards compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox games, here’s how to play them on your Xbox One:

  • Turn on your Xbox One, and make sure it’s up to date.

  • Insert an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game.

  • If the game is backwards compatible, you will see the following message. Select Install to proceed.

  • Wait for the download and installation process to complete.
