Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own
To start, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, and now widely available as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is nearly identical to the Xbox One’s controller. They both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods for connecting them to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.
Original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that shipped with the Xbox One S and later consoles include Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different you must get a wireless dongle for the non-Bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked yours up in the last four years, there’s a good chance that it already has Bluetooth.
To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the controller’s face, it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.
How To Connect The Xbox One Controller Via Bluetooth
Here’s where things get a little complicated. Certain models of the Xbox One controller can connect to any old PC Bluetooth adapter. Others can’t. Here’s how to tell if your Xbox One controller has built-in Bluetooth:
The shape of the plastic molding at the top of the controller is your clue. The first iteration of the Xbox One controller does not support Bluetooth and has a few other annoyances. Its bumpers have a narrower click range, making them less comfortable depending on where you position your fingers.
The redesigned controller launched with the Xbox One S console has a smaller plastic molding along the top. It also adds a 3.5mm headphone jack to the bottom of the controller, another easy giveaway. On top of that headphone jack, it also has built-in Bluetooth!
1. Press the Windows key and type “Bluetooth” until search brings up the Bluetooth & other devices settings option. Click it to open that settings page. Here you should see your Bluetooth is set to “On” and is discoverable.
Windows version note: Using the Xbox One controller via Bluetooth only works on Windows 10 with the Anniversary update applied.
2. Turn on the Xbox One controller by holding the Guide button. Press the sync button on top of the controller until the Guide light begins to flash rapidly.
Headset note: Only one Xbox One controller can be paired via Bluetooth. Headsets not supported.

Audio Passthrough On Xbox One S Controller Windows 10
I am trying to get audio through my Xbox one s controllers audio jack, this is connected over USB to a windows 10 laptop.
Unfortunately this is not coming up as an audio device.
The controller works fine in all other areas and I can use for games etc.
I am looking to be able to plug my headset in to get the same headset experience as I would on my xbox.
hope this makes sense,
so far I have reinstalled my soundcard drivers, uninstalled the native “fast charge” utility from asus and tried updating my controllers firmware to no avail.
I am running the latest version of windows 10 and no updates are available.
Thanks in advance
Alright, seems like your controller and headset are fine then.
First up, have you restarted the PC? Probably an obvious answer, but sometimes it gets forgotten. Restart your PC, if you haven’t already.
Just to be clear, when you say it’s not picking up, are you looking in Control Panel > Sound > Playback? And it’s not listed there? Be sure to right-click the background here, show disabled and disconnected devices, just to be sure.
If it does show up here, make sure it is set as the default device.
Failing that, right-click Start button > Device ManagerLook under Sound, video, and game controllers. See if Xbox Controller is listed there, and if it is, check that it’s not disabled . If it isn’t, right click it, and Uninstall device.

Your Xbox One controller can now perform double-duty as a game controller for your PC.
The wizardry comes courtesy of new Windows drivers that support the Xbox One controller on a Windows PC, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, revealed Thursday. Best Xbox Controller For Xbox One
Thanks to Microsoft’s robust backwards compatibility, you can play a huge library of original Xbox titles. If you’re like us and want to play the game as close to the original experience as you can, you need the Duke.
The Hyperkin Duke might not be made by Microsoft, but it’s been officially licensed by Xbox. This controller emulates the entire original Xbox Controller experience from its large, rotund shape to the almost excessive resistance on the thumbsticks. Of course, this blast from the past controller keeps the old-school black and white buttons to complete the experience.

The Next Best Xbox Controller
The Xbox Elite Series 2 might be the best controller, but its price and features may be a little more than you bargained for. So, if we were to look past that premium controller, the Xbox Core Controller would be the next best. It comes with a familiar but remodeled design. Itll feel just right in your hands if you loved the original Xbox One controllers, but it has a bit more grip. Microsoft managed this by making the side grips and even the triggers and bumpers more textured.
The redesign has also reached the D-Pad, which now has more of the concave stylings of one of the Elite Series controllers alternate D-Pads. The Xbox Core Controller has also entered the modern age of connectivity. You wont have to deal with a weak and finicky micro USB cable again as the controller now uses a USB-C port. It also has a standard 3.5mm headset jack built in. Another huge perk of the Xbox Core Controller is its flexibility. You can use it with your Xbox One, a new Xbox Series X/S, and with a ton of other devices over Bluetooth or wired connections. Though it already comes in a handful of different colors, you can also get creative with the Xbox Design Lab controller customizer.
Connect An Xbox Controller To Your Pc Via Bluetooth
Connecting your Xbox controller via Bluetooth requires the most steps, but it’s also the only method that doesn’t ask you to buy anything other than the controller–no cables or adaptors are needed. That said, you will need to buy a specific controller.
This method will not work for Xbox 360 or original Xbox One controllers. You will need an Xbox One controller that entered production alongside the Xbox One S or an Xbox Series X|S controller. So basically no Xbox controllers that were made prior to August 2016.
The easiest way to know whether you have an Xbox controller that supports Bluetooth is to read the supported features listed on the side of the box it came in. If you no longer have the box, you can tell just by looking at how the controller is designed. The original Xbox One controllers have a larger plastic molding along the top. The newer Xbox One controllers and Xbox Series X|S controllers incorporate bumpers with a wider click range and feature a smaller top plastic molding.

How To Connect Xbox Controller To Pc Via Usb Cable
The most straightforward way to connect your Xbox controller and PC is with a micro-USB cable . Simply plug the slim end into your Xbox One controller and the other end into a USB port on your PC. Hit the Xbox button to turn the controller on if it doesn’t do so on its own.
On Windows 10, your computer should recognize the controller instantly. On earlier versions of Windows, the OS should automatically download drivers and your controller will be ready in a few moments.
Note that even when plugged into a computer, the batteries in your Xbox controller will drain. We recommend picking up the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit to give your controller recharging capabilities. With it, your controller will charge when connected to your PC, eliminating battery life concerns.
When you want to disconnect your Xbox controller from the PC, just unplug it. It may flash for a few seconds as it’s looking for other devices, but it will turn off before long.
