If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.
If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.
Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.

How Backwards Compatibility Works
The Xbox One isnt normally capable of playing Xbox 360 games. Instead, Microsoft created an emulator that simulates the Xbox 360s hardware and software. Xbox 360 games run inside this emulator. Its similar to how the virtual console games work on Nintendos Wii U and Wii, or how youd run old console games in emulators on a PC.
Not all games will run in the emulator. If you have an Xbox 360 game thats compatible with your Xbox One, you can insert it into your Xbox Ones disc drive. The Xbox One will then download a ported version of that game from Microsofts servers and make it available on your console alongside your other installed games. If you have a digital copy of the game, you can download it from Microsofts servers like youd download any other digital Xbox One game.
Once you do get a game running, it should work well. You can even use the Xbox Ones Game DVR feature to record your gameplay in in Xbox 360 game. Eurogamer tested many major games and found that many of them performed better on the Xbox One than the Xbox 360, although some games had minor hitches and graphical problems that didnt appear on the Xbox 360.
But again: all this only works if the Microsoft has made the game compatible with the Xbox One. Each games publisher will need to sign off on this, and not every publisher has done so.
Xbox Series Backwards Compatibility: What Are The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Improvements On Xbox Series X And Xbox Series S
As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals in what Microsoft describes as “our most powerful and compatible console ever”.
In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: “It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.”
Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:
As well as broad backwards compatibility support for Xbox One games, select Xbox One games will also see specific Xbox Series versions for free as part of the Xbox Smart Delivery system.
In November 2021, as part of Xbox’s 20th anniversary celebrations, over 70 new titles were added from the original Xbox and Xbox 360. These were confirmed to be the last backwards compatible games to be introduced on later Xbox consoles “due to licensing, legal and technical constraints”.

Backward compatibility is an important topic for any console owner. When Xbox One first launched, it was not backward compatible with Xbox 360 games. However, backward compatibility has been introduced and many Xbox 360 games are now able to be enjoyed on Xbox One consoles.
Which Xbox Games Are Backward Compatible With Xbox Series X And S
When it comes to Xbox One backward compatibility, Xbox Head Phil Spencer confirmed in July 2020 on Xbox Wire, Its our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console. That means the vast majority of your titles will carry over, except for some Xbox Game Studios published games like Kinect Sports Rivals.
As for Xbox and Xbox 360 games, the list of backward compatible titles does get a little more restrictive, though over 600 games are still available. Microsoft has a website dedicated to saying what Xbox and Xbox 360 games work on Xbox One, and these should all carry over to Xbox Series X. How Does Dlc Work
Games with bundled DLC should work properly. For example, Red Dead Redemption for Xbox 360 is available in three different editions: Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition. All three discs are compatible and work how youd expect them to. The Game of the Year edition disc comes with all the additional content, so it will just work in the game. The standard disc doesnt come with any additional content, but you can choose to purchase the DLC from the Xbox Store and it will be enabled in your game.
Thats how it should work for most games, in theory. In practice, we found that the Xbox One just downloaded the base version of Fable II when we inserted a Fable II: Game of the Year Edition disc. The system wanted us to purchase the DLC that should have been included with the game. The Xbox One cant seem to tell the difference between the base and game of the year versions of this particular game. The Xbox One may be confused about some other Game of the Year games and their DLC, toowere not sure if this problem is specific to this one game or not.
All in all, though, the system works pretty welland should have you playing your old Xbox 360 games in no time.
Xbox Backwards Compatibility List With All Xbox 360 Games And Original Xbox Games Playable On Xbox One Xbox Series X
Xbox backwards compatibility of Xbox 360 games was Microsoft’s big surprise back at E3 2015, and since debuting the feature later that year, the publisher rolled out new releases on a month-by-month basis.
Though Microsoft wound down its original Xbox and Xbox 360 back compatible efforts in mid-2019 in favour of Xbox One support for Xbox Series X – which also supports a range of improvements – there was one final update in November 2021 as part of Xbox’s 20th anniversary celebrations, adding another 76 games and adding additional enhancements to existing ones.
While both downloadable and disc-based Xbox 360 and original Xbox games work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, only selected games are supported on a case-by-case basis. From fan-favourite Xbox Live Arcade games to some of the biggest Xbox 360 exclusives such as Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach, the roster represents a wide selection of some of Xbox’s greatest hits.

Can The Xbox Series S Also Play Xbox 360 Games
The answer is yes, the Xbox Series S can play original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games.
However, the backward compatibility experience will slightly differ from that of the Xbox Series X.
First, the Series S is a digital-only console. Therefore, youll not be able to play physical Xbox 360 games on the console because it doesnt include a disc drive.
Second, the Xbox Series S is designed to support a 1440p resolution. So if youre looking to move to native 4K gaming for your Xbox 360 games, sorry to disappoint you, that wont be possible with this console.
That said, the Xbox Series S will offer you Auto HDR, faster loading times, and higher frame rates. Also, some Xbox 360 games will play at up to 120fps just like they would do on the Xbox Series X.
How To Play Xbox 360 Games On Xbox One Without Backward Compatibility And Offline

In the following chart, any Xbox game with a “Yes” for its region will work in that region, and only in others which also have “Yes” . “Yes” in the 60Hz column indicates that the PAL title supports 60Hz output mode, and thus is compatible with the Xbox 360 VGA cable.
A game with “Yes” in the widescreen column has built-in support for widescreen, and will fill high definition displays. If the widescreen column is “No”, pillar boxing is used to preserve aspect ratio on high definition displays. Note that all compatible games will stretch to widescreen if the Xbox 360 is configured for standard or enhanced definition .
Any game not on the list at all does not work in any region at present.
