List Of Xbox Games Compatible With Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 gaming console has received updates from Microsoft from its launch in 2005 until November 2007 that enable it to play select games from its predecessor, Xbox. The Xbox 360 launched with backward compatibility with the number of supported Xbox games varying depending on region. Microsoft continued to update the list of Xbox games that were compatible with Xbox 360 until November 2007 when the list was finalized. Microsoft later launched the Xbox Originals program on December 7, 2007 where select backward compatible Xbox games could be purchased digitally on Xbox 360 consoles with the program ending less than two years later in June 2009. The following is a list of all backward compatible games on Xbox 360 under this functionality.
New Games Old Hardware
Microsoft has said you wont have to buy new hardware to enjoy its upcoming first-party titles because many of them will also come to Xbox One. Heres how Xbox chief Phil Spencer described the companys approach back in July, where he said that every Xbox Game Studios game in the next couple of years will be playable on the Xbox One.
You wont be forced into the next generation. We want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. Thats why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of yearslike Halo Infinitewill be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We wont force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.
And if youre more of a PC gamer and dont own an Xbox One, then Microsoft also typically releases its major titles there as well, and it says it plans to continue this policy this year.
Microsoft has promised to bring Halo Infinite to PC and Xbox One as well as its new Xbox consoles.
There are some caveats you should be aware of. First is that these promises only cover Microsofts first-party titles, aka those published by Xbox Game Studios. Microsoft isnt making any promises about how other publishers like EA, Ubisoft, or Activision will handle their new games.

Does It Cost Me Anything
Xbox offers backward compatibility for free.
If you own a supported game already, you do not have to pay anything to play it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S.
Obviously, it costs to purchase new Xbox 360 or Xbox games that work on the machine.
Many of the games with backward compatibility are also available as part of a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. For £10.99 a month, you get access to more than 300 games to download and play on your console, made up of a mix of classic Xbox 360 and Xbox games, plus many more Xbox One and Series X/S titles. You also get online gaming access through Xbox Live Gold, EA Play, Cloud Gaming, and even Game Pass for PC.

New Games No Hardware
Say you dont own an Xbox or a gaming PC, but you do have an Android phone. Does Microsoft have any next-gen gaming options for you? Thanks to game streaming, it does. On September 15th, Microsoft added game streaming to Xbox Games Pass Ultimate, which costs $14.99 a month. The feature, which was known previously as xCloud, could give you a way to play many of the biggest Xbox Series X games without having to own any gaming hardware at all. You can stream them to a device as simple as an Android phone, for example .
Game streaming isnt an entirely new idea Sony launched its PlayStation Now service way back in 2014 to a muted response but Microsoft is taking a much more interesting approach. Rather than focusing on older titles, as Sony did with PlayStation Now, Microsoft says its new games will be available to stream the day they release and lists recent first-party titles like Forza Horizon 4, Gears of War 5, Tell Me Why, The Outer Worlds, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps as being among the 150-plus games available to stream at launch.
Microsoft promises to let you stream major Xbox games straight to your phone.

How Compatibility Is Achieved
According to Microsoft, each game needs an emulation profile to run. These profiles can be downloaded through the Xbox Live service or from Xbox.com and burned on CD or DVD recordable media. They are also routinely distributed as part of the content on the Official Xbox Magazine monthly discs. The profiles are downloaded as a single bundle, and hence only need to be applied once per update , or are automatically downloaded the first time a compatible game is inserted.
The Xbox 360 hard disk is required to play the games on this list. The hard disk is used not only to store the emulation software, but also to store saved games, store downloaded content, and to serve as a data cache for titles which utilize disk caching. Since games for the Xbox were designed with the expectation that a hard drive would always be available, most titles rely heavily on the presence of one.
An early version of the emulator for playing Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 offline was included with the Xbox 360 hard drive at launch. Xbox 360 hard drives manufactured later include updated emulation profiles which allow a greater range of titles to be played out of the box without updating. Whenever a new set of emulation profiles is released, drives manufactured after that date automatically include the latest update.

What Discs Work In An Xbox Series X
With the Xbox Series X, you can use game discs for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox all Xbox One titles should be compatible, along with any Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that work with Xbox One. Insert the game disc then follow any on-screen prompts to install data or download updates, and once that’s done you’re good to go.
For entertainment, you may be wondering does Xbox Series X play Blu-ray movies? Well yes, the Xbox Series X can use Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs to watch your favourite movies, TV shows, and more. To get started, head to the Store app on your Xbox Series X and download the Blu-ray Player app, then once that’s installed simply pop in your disc and start viewing.
List Of Compatible Titles
In the following chart, any Xbox game with a “Yes” for its region will work in that region, and only in others which also have “Yes” . “Yes” in the 60Hz column indicates that the PAL title supports 60Hz output mode, and thus is compatible with the Xbox 360 VGA cable.
A game with “Yes” in the widescreen column has built-in support for widescreen, and will fill high definition displays. If the widescreen column is “No”, pillar boxing is used to preserve aspect ratio on high definition displays. Note that all compatible games will stretch to widescreen if the Xbox 360 is configured for standard or enhanced definition .
Any game not on the list at all does not work in any region at present.

Compatibility Limitations Of Xbox Games
Backward compatibility is a consumer-friendly selling point, and it’s a useful feature to offer. However, because games played on the newer system aren’t running in the original environment they were developed for, the results aren’t always as good as you might hope.
For example, if you want to continue saved games from the OG Xbox, you’ll be disappointed. Game saves can’t be transferred from the Xbox to the Xbox 360. Also, you can’t play original Xbox games online because the Xbox network no longer works with these OG games.
Backward-compatible original Xbox games don’t always work or look better when played on an Xbox 360. Some have new glitches, graphical problems, frame-rate issues, or other quirks that degrade the quality of the gameplay and that weren’t seen with the OG Xbox.
For these reasons, if you really want to play older Xbox games, you should buy an original Xbox console the performance will be a lot more consistent. The original Xbox controller is also laid out quite a bit differently from the Xbox 360 controller, so playing original Xbox games with the OG Xbox controller for which the games were designed will make gameplay easier and more enjoyable.
Can I Carry On With My Previous Xbox 360 Game Saves On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s
If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.
If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.
Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.

The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.
However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.
In terms of features, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One supports:
- Digital and disc-based games at no additional cost
- Support for existing saves , DLC, Achievement progress, and the original dashboard
- Multiplayer between those playing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
- Select Xbox One system features, including Game DVR, Windows 10 streaming and screenshots
Many Xbox 360 games are also currently available on Microsoft’s Netflix-style Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

Microsofts Two New Consoles
This week, Microsoft released its two new Xbox consoles. Theres the $499 Xbox Series X, and a cheaper $299 Xbox Series S. You can read our reviews of both of them by following the links below.
Its not unusual for console manufacturers to offer a couple of different hardware options at launch, but normally, the differences are minor. The PS3, for example, was initially available in two models. There was a version with a 60GB hard drive as well as a cheaper version with a smaller 20GB hard drive, no Wi-Fi support, and fewer ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft also originally sold a Core version of the Xbox 360 in 2005, which included compromises like including a wired rather than wireless controller and omitting a hard drive.
The differences between the Xbox Series S and Series X are more substantial and have a big impact on how games look. While Microsoft says the Series X is targeting running games at 60fps at a full 4K resolution, the Series S instead targets a lower 1440p resolution at 60fps. Its a big power disparity, similar to what we saw between the Xbox One and the Xbox One X, but this time, the two consoles were available on day one, rather than releasing years apart.
The Xbox Series X comes complete with a disc drive.Microsofts Series S is less powerful and digital-only.

Xbox Series X Makes The Best Even Better
Another feature of the backward compatibility function that should not be overlooked is how the Xbox Series X gives many of these games a much-needed performance boost. The first time I booted up Skate 3 and cruised around Port Carverton in glorious 60 fps I felt like my entire $499 outlay had been justified.
The first time I booted up Skate 3 and cruised around Port Carverton in glorious 60 fps I felt like my entire $499 outlay had been justified.
Unfortunately, the whole roster of nearly 700 games hasnt been boosted but a solid handful has been. Plus, during the aforementioned Xbox Anniversary stream, another couple of dozen were added to the list. Among the games boosted this week is beloved 2008 RPG Fallout 3 which definitely needed a framerate increased as on 360 it was prone to chugging even at 30 fps.
Microsoft deserves huge credit for not only enabling previous-gen games to be playable on the Xbox Series X but also actively working to make them play better than ever on its newest machine. This stands in stark contrast to Sony whos made zero backward compatibility efforts with the PS4 and made little more than the minimum amount with the PS5.
Faq: How To Play Xbox Games On The New Xbox 360
Before you try to play an original Xbox game in the new Xbox 360, make sure your read this list of frequently asked questions.
The Xbox 360 may be fun and all, but sometimes you just feel like having a good ol’ Covenant bashing session playing Halo 2. Maybe you’re keen on visiting the land of Faerun again by spinning your Fable disc. Or perhaps you’re keen to test your skills by playing Ninja Gaiden. Thankfully, the 360 can play many Xbox 1 titles.
But before you stick your copy of Forza Motorsport into the 360, there are a few things you need to know. Check our list of frequently asked questions below for hassle-free gaming!
1. Can the Xbox 360 play all Xbox 1 games? The simple answer, sadly, is no. Only about 200 Xbox 1 titles are able to be played on the new console, although Microsoft says more games will be continually added. For a full list of compatible games, click here.
2. What’s the big deal? I thought the 360 was supposed to be backwards compatible. Why can’t it play all Xbox 1 games? The Xbox 360 is a powerful machine, but to be able to play Xbox 1 games it needs software emulators for each individual title. What that essentially means is the 360 needs a little software program to tell it how to play that old Xbox 1 game, and that’s something Microsoft’s programmers are still in the process of doing for all Xbox games. Expect more updates from the big M on this in the coming months.
