Max Payne : The Fall Of Max Payne
Remedy Entertainment’s story-driven action game prowess may have shined brightest with Control, but the studio got its start in the genre with the Max Payne series. Remedy developed the first two Max Payne games, with Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne being the better of the two. You played as the titular detective for the NYPD assisting a contract killer in unraveling a massive conspiracy. Though Max Payne 2 isn’t a lengthy game, it never wastes a moment thanks to top-notch writing and action gameplay. Like the original, which adapted the “bullet time” mechanic from The Matrix, you can slow down time to shoot enemies and dodge shots. Bullet time is more than just a novelty in Max Payne 2 it’s a central mechanic that can be used strategically to take out waves of enemies in quick succession. There aren’t many linear third-person shooters like Max Payne 2 nowadays, and there’s no indication that Rockstar Games has any interest in making Max Payne 4.

Buying Original Xbox Games Digitally

While some of these titles were already available on the Microsoft Store for use with Xbox 360 consoles, Microsoft recently added the remaining titles to offer the complete launch library in digital form.

Due To Licensing Legal And Technical Constraints
Xbox just added 70+ games to its backward compatibility program. But this massive drop will be the last set of games added as Xbox announced licensing and legal constraints means it can no longer add games to backward compatibility.
Tucked away in the officialXbox Wire post announcing the latest drop of backward compatible and enhanced games, Xbox writes, While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints. The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.
However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
While Grand Theft Auto III was the first game in the controversial franchise to make the leap to 3D, it was Vice City that really capitalized on the new perspective. Set in a fictional version of Miami comprised of two islands, Vice City starred Tommy Vercetti, a mobster who just finished a 15-year prison sentence for murder. Though Vice City had an interesting story and excellent variety of missions, much of the fun came from using the vibrant world as a playground to see what kind of trouble you could stir up. Rockstar Games nailed the 1980s setting, and Vice City is arguably still the best locale in series history.

Star Wars: Battlefront Ii
Despite two newer Battlefrontgames coming out during the Xbox One era, the original Xbox versions remain incredibly popular, especially 2005’s Battlefront II. The series allows players to pick their side – Empire or Rebel, Separatists or Clones – and then battle it out using Jedi heroes like Luke Skywalker and armored walkers like the AT-AT.
The game was so successful because it gave fans what they always wanted…the ability to literally be transported into the middle of an epic Star Wars battle. Even better, the online multiplayer mode is still available for the Xbox version.

Suffice it to say, if you dont have the cash to make a big upfront purchase, then Microsoft still wants to get you on board for its next generation of consoles. You wont own any of the games you can play , but thats the trade-off you make.
Microsofts plans for the next generation of gaming are sprawling. Two consoles that are available via subscription and can play a huge chunk of your existing Xbox games, a new roster of games that will be playable on your existing Xbox One, a continuing focus on PC gaming, and a game streaming service mean that, no matter what hardware you own, theres a decent chance youll be able to pay Microsoft to play its games.
Weve written before about how the focus on trying to sell subscriptions rather than premium hardware means that the true next-gen Xbox is the subscription itself, rather than the hardware it plays on. Microsoft is casting its net wide, and it doesnt want any hardware requirements to get in the way of you subscribing.
Sony, meanwhile, is doing what its always done: its making a new console, developing exclusive games for it, and selling it. Its hard to argue too much with the approach when its done so well for the company so far, especially with the PS4.

New Games New Hardware
New hardware needs new games to make the most of it, and Microsoft and its partners have announced a host of games that are coming to its new console. The biggest of these is Halo: Infinite, the latest entry in the long-running sci-fi first-person shooter franchise thats become synonymous with the Xbox brand since its debut way back in 2001.
Unfortunately, Microsoft recently delayed Halo: Infinite, meaning it will now release in 2021, rather than arriving alongside the new console. News of the delay, which Microsoft attributed in part to the pandemic, came after the games visuals were met with criticism after their initial unveiling, prompting developer 343 Industries to admit, We do have work to do to address some of these areas and raise the level of fidelity and overall presentation for the final game.
With other Xbox staples like Fable and Forza Motorsport without release dates, the delay has left third-party publishers to fill in the rest of the launch lineup, including Assassins Creed Valhalla, Dirt 5, Watch Dogs Legion, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Heres a guide to the best launch day games, and heres what the months ahead are looking like in terms of new releases.
Assassins Creed Valhalla is a high-profile launch title for the new consoles.
What Is Optimised For Xbox Series X/s
Like with the Xbox One X, which had games listed as “Enhanced for Xbox One X”, the Xbox Series X and Series S will have titles badged as Optimised for Series X/S. They even come with their own, snazzy logo . But what does that signify?
Well, it basically means that when a game runs on the all-singing and dancing Xbox Series X or more affordable Series S, it will offer graphical performance enhancements over the same game running on an Xbox One, maybe even some extra in-game extras.
That could mean developers raising the frame rate of the game, up to 120fps, or ensuring it plays in native 4K on Series X rather than the cut back or dynamic UHD resolutions many Xbox One X titles offer.
They could even add further draw distances, ray-tracing, or any other graphical wizardry that only the Xbox Series X/S are capable of.
Any of these extra features could result in a game being tagged as Optimised for Xbox Series X/S.
One thing to note though, a game doesn’t need to be native 4K/1440p HDR to be badged, it could have enhancements in other ways, such as Smart Delivery, as explained below, or simply faster loading times.
Nor does it need to hit 60fps minimum . Ubisoft, for example, will only guarantee that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will run at 30fps on Series X and S.

Will Old Xbox Discs Work On The Xbox Series S
The short answer is no. Unlike the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S doesn’t feature a physical disc drive, so you won’t be able to play your Xbox discs on the Xbox Series S, even from the previous generation, the Xbox One.
If you have a lot of old Xbox game discs that you intend to play, it’s highly recommended you consider the Xbox Series X instead.
However, if you have digital downloads of your games, these will play on Xbox Series S.
