Yes You Can Play Those Old Xbox 360 Games On That New Console
- Shoreline Community College
- Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
The Xbox One can play certain Xbox 360 games, Xbox Live Arcade games, and even original Xbox games. There are no costs involved, so you can freely play all of your old compatible games if you’re still holding onto the discs.
It is a little more complicated than just inserting an Xbox 360 game into your Xbox One and playing though, and you’ll need a high speed internet connection to download updates for each game you want to play.
Backwards compatibility works the same on all Xbox One consoles, including the original version, the Xbox One S, and the Xbox One X. The only differences are that consoles with more hard drive space can store more backwards compatible games, and a handful of backwards compatible games have been enhanced for the Xbox One X.

Backward compatibility is an important topic for any console owner. When Xbox One first launched, it was not backward compatible with Xbox 360 games. However, backward compatibility has been introduced and many Xbox 360 games are now able to be enjoyed on Xbox One consoles.
Here’s Every Xbox 360 Game You Can Play On Xbox One
Thanks to backward compatibility, your Xbox One library is a whole lot bigger than it used to be. More than 300 Xbox 360 games are playable on Microsoft’s latest system, from indie darlings such as Shadow Complex and Braid to huge hits such as Mass Effect and Borderlands.
The list of compatible Xbox 360 games runs the gamut from digital-only games and retro remakes to major blockbusters such as Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3, Dark Souls, Call of Duty: Black Ops and the entire Gears of War series. Microsoft has been adding new games to the list as often as multiple times a week.
Notable New Additions: Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Grand Theft Auto IV, Darksiders, Assassin’s Creed III
You can access your digital 360 games from Xbox One’s “My Games and Apps” menu, and play your disc-based games by simply putting them in your Xbox One. You can easily transfer your Xbox 360 saves to Xbox One via cloud storage.

Does It Work With Xbox Games I Bought Through Xbox Store
Xbox backward compatibility works with digital content as well as disc games. In fact, if you enter a supported disc into your Xbox One or Series X, the machine will download the game from the Xbox store first – although you will need the disc to be in the machine each time you play. This cannot work on an Xbox One S All-digital Edition or Xbox Series S, of course, as they do not feature disc drives.
If you own a digital copy of a supported game it appears in your games list ready for download. Check your My Games & Apps hub to see if any are listed among the games yet to be installed.
How To Play Xbox 360 And Xbox Games On An Xbox One
Unless you have the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition console, which lacks a disc drive, all you need to do is pop the older game disc into your Xbox One to play it.
And of course you can always buy an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game digitally and then play it on your Xbox One console.
To play an Xbox 360 game you bought digitally:
1. Log into your Xbox One account and then go into the “My games & apps” section.
2. Now scroll all the way to the right, past all of your Xbox One games.
3. Assuming your Xbox 360 game is one of the many titles supported for backward compatibility, it will appear on your list of games. Click on its icon, and it will download to the Xbox One console.
Beyond the nostalgic enjoyment of older games, the older Xbox games will actually look and play better than ever on an Xbox One. The games will experience fewer issues like screen tearing and lag, and some graphics are even improved.

How Backwards Compatibility Works
The Xbox One isnt normally capable of playing Xbox 360 games. Instead, Microsoft created an emulator that simulates the Xbox 360s hardware and software. Xbox 360 games run inside this emulator. Its similar to how the virtual console games work on Nintendos Wii U and Wii, or how youd run old console games in emulators on a PC.
Not all games will run in the emulator. If you have an Xbox 360 game thats compatible with your Xbox One, you can insert it into your Xbox Ones disc drive. The Xbox One will then download a ported version of that game from Microsofts servers and make it available on your console alongside your other installed games. If you have a digital copy of the game, you can download it from Microsofts servers like youd download any other digital Xbox One game.
Once you do get a game running, it should work well. You can even use the Xbox Ones Game DVR feature to record your gameplay in in Xbox 360 game. Eurogamer tested many major games and found that many of them performed better on the Xbox One than the Xbox 360, although some games had minor hitches and graphical problems that didnt appear on the Xbox 360.
But again: all this only works if the Microsoft has made the game compatible with the Xbox One. Each games publisher will need to sign off on this, and not every publisher has done so.
Does It Cost Me Anything
Xbox offers backward compatibility for free.
If you own a supported game already, you do not have to pay anything to play it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S.
Obviously, it costs to purchase new Xbox 360 or Xbox games that work on the machine.
Many of the games with backward compatibility are also available as part of a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. For £10.99 a month, you get access to more than 300 games to download and play on your console, made up of a mix of classic Xbox 360 and Xbox games, plus many more Xbox One and Series X/S titles. You also get online gaming access through Xbox Live Gold, EA Play, Cloud Gaming, and even Game Pass for PC.

Which Xbox Games Are Backward Compatible With Xbox Series X And S
When it comes to Xbox One backward compatibility, Xbox Head Phil Spencer confirmed in July on Xbox Wire,“Itâs our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.” That means the vast majority of your titles will carry over, with the exception of some Xbox Game Studios published games like Kinect Sports Rivals.
As for Xbox and Xbox 360 games, the list of backward compatible titles does get a little more restrictive, though over 600 games are still available. Microsoft has a website dedicated to saying what Xbox and Xbox 360 games work on Xbox One, and these should all carry over to Xbox Series X. Check out the full list of titles to see how many Xbox games in your library are supported.

What Does Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Mean For Xbox Series X And S Backward Compatibility
Xbox Game Pass members essentially have many backward compatible games they can play right away when next-gen consoles launch. While some Xbox Series X launch games will be on Game Pass, the majority of its library is made up of Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles. It seems that almost every game on Xbox Game Pass should be supported by Xbox Series X and S, as Microsoft has not indicated otherwise.
The company has boasted in Xbox Wire posts that there will be hundreds of games for Xbox Game Pass subscribers to play on Xbox Series X and S day one even if they don’t purchase any actual games with the console. Backward compatibility will be hard to miss out on during the early days of the Xbox Series X, and Xbox Game Pass gives an easy way for over 15 million people to experience it if they get a next-gen Xbox console.
Xbox Series X and Series S will be released on November 10, 2020.
List Of Xbox Games Compatible With Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 gaming console has received updates from Microsoft from its launch in 2005 until November 2007 that enable it to play select games from its predecessor, Xbox. The Xbox 360 launched with backward compatibility with the number of supported Xbox games varying depending on region. Microsoft continued to update the list of Xbox games that were compatible with Xbox 360 until November 2007 when the list was finalized. Microsoft later launched the Xbox Originals program on December 7, 2007 where select backward compatible Xbox games could be purchased digitally on Xbox 360 consoles with the program ending less than two years later in June 2009. The following is a list of all backward compatible games on Xbox 360 under this functionality.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility: How Well Do Xbox 360 Games Run On Xbox One
The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.
However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.
In terms of features, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One supports:
- Digital and disc-based games at no additional cost
- Support for existing saves , DLC, Achievement progress, and the original dashboard
- Multiplayer between those playing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
- Select Xbox One system features, including Game DVR, Windows 10 streaming and screenshots
Many Xbox 360 games are also currently available on Microsoft’s Netflix-style Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
Xbox Users Can Finally Play Classic Xbox 360 Game Again
Xbox users can finally buy a classic Xbox 360 game again. One of the big selling points of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and the Xbox One before them, is backward compatibility. All three Xbox consoles can play a wide range of Xbox 360 and even original Xbox games. One of these games mysteriously became unpurchasable last month, and nobody knew why. It’s still unclear why the game — which retained its digital listing — couldn’t be purchased, but it’s back for sale.
At the time of the issue, there was no information or acknowledgment from any implicated party. That said, during this period, when you went to cop the game, it gave you the DLC. Xbox users only found this out when after the game was downloaded they went to boot it up and it didn’t work. That said, this is apparently no longer an issue and those who purchased the game during this time now have proper access. As for the game itself, it was the original NieR.
As always, we will keep you updated as the situation evolves. It seems Square Enix and Xbox will not be publicly commenting on the situation, so don’t expect an update from their end, but it’s clear someone has been working on the problem. That said, if you’re thinking about buying the game, it may be worth waiting a bit longer just to make sure the problem is completely gone.

Bethesda rarely fails to impress, and the early-generation role-playing game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion certainly lived up to expectations. With far more realistic environments and characters than we saw in Morrowind for the original Xbox, its among the best games the company has ever made, and the freedom you have to choose between so many different class options means theres a play-style for just about everyone. Its sequel, Skyrim, is the perfect game to play next on your Xbox One.
Are Xbox Series X And S Backward Compatible With Xbox Xbox 360 And Xbox One
Unlike the PS5, which is only compatible with the PS4, the Xbox Series X and S are compatible with all previous Xbox systems. That means that many of your Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games will work on Xbox Series X and S. If you own any titles for these systems digitally, they will automatically carry over when you log into your Microsoft account.
Physically, you can put the disc in the Xbox Series X to claim and download the game. Microsoft is claiming that many games will even be enhanced for Xbox Series X and S, playing at higher frame rates and resolutions.

You can even use the Xbox One Game DVR feature to record your gameplay in in Xbox 360 game. Can I Carry On With My Previous Xbox 360 Game Saves On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s
If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.
If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.
Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.
