Xboxs Albert Panello told GameSpot at the ongoing Tokyo Game Show that it isnt recommended to keep the upcoming Xbox One in a vertical position. “We don’t support vertical orientation do it at your own risk,” he warned.
Panello later clarified, “It wouldn’t be a cooling problem, we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both.”
All of the previous-gen consoles had the ability to sit upright without any issues. The trend was started a generation earlier with the PlayStation 2, which was primarily advertised sitting upright instead of horizontally.

Microsoft is quite confident about the sales of Xbox One. The company had earlier revealed that it hopes to make a profit from the launch sales of the Xbox 360. Precedent goes against the company, since the neither the original Xbox nor the Xbox 360 could even break even at launch.
Xbox’s Yusuf Mehdi said during the Citi Global Technology Conference that “we’re looking to break even or low margin at worst” with the new console. Historically, gaming companies have generally sold their consoles at losses, and recovered the price and made profits thanks to the licensing of games for their consoles.

How To Play 4k On An Xbox One
1. From your Xbox One’s Home screen, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the menu.
2. Navigate to the System tab on the far-right side of the menu. Select “Settings” and press the A button.
3. Under the “General” sub-menu, navigate to “TV & display options” and press A.
4. Under Display, select “Resolution” and press A to open a drop-down menu. If you want your Xbox One to display everything in 4K, select “4K UHD” and press A, then select “Yes” and press A, and you’re all set.
- If, instead of displaying everything in 4K, you want your Xbox One to display at a lower resolution and upscale its graphics to 4K when applicable, select “720p” or “1080p” on the drop-down menu and press A, then select “Yes” and press A.

While both viable, our early time with Xbox Series S highlighted how the console may better suit horizontal positioning. Unlike the firm base with Xbox Series X, this console sits tall, with little surface area to keep it steady. The slender design can make it easier to topple, which is worth considering if there’s a chance of falling.
Xbox Series S doesn’t use the same vertical cooling system as Xbox Series X, so you’re looking at one bold black fan with side vents to draw air. It’s key to leave room around the console from all angles, especially keeping that primary vent clear. And as an all-digital device, you don’t need to worry about that disc drive, either.

However, they do exist. MyLifeUnit’s offering does exactly what it sets out to, with the Xbox One console fitting perfectly and remaining sturdy even when bumped or knocked.

The Vertical Stand Will Not Be Included With Every Xbox One S Console
Microsoft recently unveiled a new, slimmer version of its Xbox One console at E3, dubbed the “Xbox One S”. Among the added capabilities in the new model is one that would be a boon for gamers with a serious lack of space: the ability to stand vertically a necessary accessory for this function – the vertical stand – may not come with all Xbox One S, however.
Specifically, the vertical stand has been found by Reddit users to be listed on the Amazon Store Canada for pre-ordering, which begs the question of why it can be purchased separately if the thing comes with every machine, and every machine needs only one. The cool Canadian $39.99 price does not help with the speculations as well .
Not all is lost of course: other sources suggest that the vertical stand will only come with the 2TB model of the Xbox One S, which will come before lower-storage options in early August at $399. The next version in line, 1TB, will reportedly retail for $349, which means for 50 dollars more you get double the storage and a vertical stand.

Microsoft E3 201: Xbox One X Can Stand Vertically
You can orient the console vertically if you want, using an optional accessory.
Just like the Xbox One S, Microsoft’s new, more powerful Xbox One X console can stand vertically. Xbox director Albert Penello confirmed on Twitter that you can orient the console vertically with an optional accessory that Microsoft will sell separately.
“Yes there is an optional stand for vertical!” Penello said.
The Xbox One S vertical stand is priced at $20. Given that the Xbox One X is smaller than the S, it might be that there is a new stand specific to that device, though there does not appear to be a product page available for it yet on Microsoft’s website. We will report back with more information as it becomes available.
The Xbox One X launches on November 7, priced at $500 in the US. International pricing is £449, 499, CA$599, and AU$649.

Make sure you use only the stand designed for your Xbox, which helps console stability and operation. Without the stand, vertical positioning blocks a cooling vent.
