How To Install And Play An Xbox 360 Game On Your Xbox One

If you dont have a game you want to play yet, there are two ways to get one. First, you can acquire a physical copy of the game. This can be either a new copy or a used copy, so you may be able to find a good deal on a website like eBay or Amazon .

Used copies work well because the Xbox One doesnt actually play the game from the disc. The Xbox One just needs to check the disc and verify what it is. The actual game is downloaded from Microsofts servers and run from your Xbox Ones hard drive. As long as the Xbox One can recognize the disc, youre fine.

Once you have the disc, insert it into your Xbox One. The Xbox One will tell you it needs to download an update for the game. Its really downloading the entire ported version of the game.

When its done, you just have to launch the game like you would any other. The Xbox One will need the games disc in its disc drive while you play it to confirm you do indeed own the game, but the game will actually run from the Xbox Ones internal drive and not the disc.

You can also purchase digital copies of Xbox 360 games from Microsofts Xbox store. If you already own a digital copy of the game, youll find it available for installation on your Xbox One alongside any normal Xbox One games you have. Head to My Games and Apps > Ready to Install to see games and apps you can install.

Can I Carry On With My Previous Xbox 360 Game Saves On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s

If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.

If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.

Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.

Using a unique sword-cutting system, Raiden can turn nearly any enemy into ribbons of flesh or metal, and the bosses he fights are over-the-top enough for even the most dedicated Metal Gear fans.

    How Backwards Compatibility Works

The Xbox One isnt normally capable of playing Xbox 360 games. Instead, Microsoft created an emulator that simulates the Xbox 360s hardware and software. Xbox 360 games run inside this emulator. Its similar to how the virtual console games work on Nintendos Wii U and Wii, or how youd run old console games in emulators on a PC.

Not all games will run in the emulator. If you have an Xbox 360 game thats compatible with your Xbox One, you can insert it into your Xbox Ones disc drive. The Xbox One will then download a ported version of that game from Microsofts servers and make it available on your console alongside your other installed games. If you have a digital copy of the game, you can download it from Microsofts servers like youd download any other digital Xbox One game.

Once you do get a game running, it should work well. You can even use the Xbox Ones Game DVR feature to record your gameplay in in Xbox 360 game. Eurogamer tested many major games and found that many of them performed better on the Xbox One than the Xbox 360, although some games had minor hitches and graphical problems that didnt appear on the Xbox 360.

But again: all this only works if the Microsoft has made the game compatible with the Xbox One. Each games publisher will need to sign off on this, and not every publisher has done so.

It is a little more complicated than just inserting an Xbox 360 game into your Xbox One and playing though, and you’ll need a high speed internet connection to download updates for each game you want to play.

Backwards compatibility works the same on all Xbox One consoles, including the original version, the Xbox One S, and the Xbox One X. The only differences are that consoles with more hard drive space can store more backwards compatible games, and a handful of backwards compatible games have been enhanced for the Xbox One X.

As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals in what Microsoft describes as “our most powerful and compatible console ever”.

In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: “It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.”

Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:

As well as broad backwards compatibility support for Xbox One games, select Xbox One games will also see specific Xbox Series versions for free as part of the Xbox Smart Delivery system.

In November 2021, as part of Xbox’s 20th anniversary celebrations, over 70 new titles were added from the original Xbox and Xbox 360. These were confirmed to be the last backwards compatible games to be introduced on later Xbox consoles “due to licensing, legal and technical constraints”.

Profile Issues On Xbox One Playing Xbox 360 Games

I have a problem and am hoping someone can help.

I have an Xbox One, and a number of Xbox 360 games I used to be able to play on it but can’t any more. I’ll just talk about one for now, but the same issue is with multiple Xbox 360 games.

When I try to play Halo 3 it tells me it can’t find my profile and needs to download it. But when it tries, it fails and tells me to check connectivity.

I know the One console has connectivity as I can play any Xbox One game on it over Live without problems … I can see it from the router, etc. so am happy the console has local network connectivity and internet access. It just won’t download the 360 profile.

I’ve spoken to Xbox Support three times about it now, and each time, we go through the same basic steps:

      • Delete the One profile and re-add it … won’t download the 360 profile.
      • Remove all settings short of a factory reset, re-add the One profile … won’t download the 360 profile.
      • I’ve even gone further and done a full factory reset, wiping everything, re-added the One profile … … won’t download the 360 profile.

When these steps fail, Xbox Support tell me they’ve escalated it to an internal team to investigate, and I hear nothing else. The cases just get closed with no information provided.

The fact I’ve factory reset the console makes me think the issue isn’t with the console … but somewhere else in the Xbox ecosystem, but I can’t influence that.

If anyone has any ideas of how I can resolve this, I’ll be eternally grateful.
