Why Doesn’t Xbox One Support Bluetooth

How To Connect a Bluetooth Xbox One S Controller to Android Mobile Cell PHONE

The Xbox One launched without Bluetooth support and half a decade later, it remains absent. It means Bluetooth controllers, headsets, keyboards, and mice aren’t compatible with the console. Microsoft has ruled out the common wireless standard for its Xbox One family, pushing its proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol instead. This in-house technology can be used by cable-free controllers and headsets on Xbox One, building an ecosystem of licensed peripherals.

If you’re an Xbox One owner, you’ve likely been using Xbox Wireless for years without even knowing it. The radio frequency module embedded in all Xbox One consoles taps into this protocol, boasting a higher-frequency connection over standard 2.4GHz Bluetooth. It primarily reduces latency, while packing support for wireless stereo audio, impulse triggers, and more on Xbox controllers. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless is ultimately superior as the “premium” experience, though it lacks the ubiquity of Bluetooth.

A cynical mindset can also frame this as a lockdown of the Xbox accessories lineup. Microsoft has full control over the wireless Xbox gamepad range, with all wireless controllers designed internally. And while third-party headsets can use the Xbox Wireless chip, the barrier of obtaining Microsoft’s blessing remains. We’ve also seen the Xbox One welcome more accessories with formal mouse and keyboard support, though this is limited to wired or wireless adapters over USB.

How To Connect The Xbox One Controller Via Bluetooth

Here’s where things get a little complicated. Certain models of the Xbox One controller can connect to any old PC Bluetooth adapter. Others can’t. Here’s how to tell if your Xbox One controller has built-in Bluetooth:

The shape of the plastic molding at the top of the controller is your clue. The first iteration of the Xbox One controller does not support Bluetooth and has a few other annoyances. Its bumpers have a narrower click range, making them less comfortable depending on where you position your fingers.

The redesigned controller launched with the Xbox One S console has a smaller plastic molding along the top. It also adds a 3.5mm headphone jack to the bottom of the controller, another easy giveaway. On top of that headphone jack, it also has built-in Bluetooth!

    1. Press the Windows key and type “Bluetooth” until search brings up the Bluetooth & other devices settings option. Click it to open that settings page. Here you should see your Bluetooth is set to “On” and is discoverable.

Windows version note: Using the Xbox One controller via Bluetooth only works on Windows 10 with the Anniversary update applied.

    2. Turn on the Xbox One controller by holding the Guide button. Press the sync button on top of the controller until the Guide light begins to flash rapidly.

Headset note: Only one Xbox One controller can be paired via Bluetooth. Headsets not supported.

What Is The Difference Between The Xbox One And One S Controllers

Both major versions of the Xbox One controller, the original and the One S pad, launched with their respective consoles, in 2013 and 2016.

Cosmetically, there are few differences between the two controllers, so from an aesthetic perspective, you dont need to worry too much if you end up with both types of controller – they wont look mismatched. Check out the section below about telling the difference so you dont accidentally buy the wrong version.

The major difference between the two controllers is the presence of Bluetooth within the S controller, as opposed to the original which didnt have it. This has two benefits. Firstly, you can connect your controller to your PC without the need for a dongle should you want to use it for PC games. Secondly, you can connect a pair of wireless bluetooth headphones to the One S controller.

The new, updated controller also offers a somewhat better range in terms of how far it will work from your console, although the original controller has as much range as youre ever likely to need.

The handles on the One S controller also boast a slightly improved texture for grip when compared to the uniform plastic found on the grips of the original. One exception to this is the special Lunar White original controller, which features the same rubberised diamond grip as found on the Elite controller .
