Did Xbox 360 Servers Finally Shut Down?

Halo Xbox 360 servers including Halo 3s original batch will be shut down on 14 January 2022, Microsoft has today revealed.

Microsoft and 343 made a general announcement back these legacy servers back in December 2020, though the specific date was only revealed recently.

Impacted titles include Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo Reach, Halo 4, Halo Wars, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo Spartan Assault on Xbox 360. Servers for those games and any other Halo titles including The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One and above are not affected.

To date, weve juggled future-facing work and priorities with continued upkeep of Halos Xbox 360 legacy services,343 said in a statement. Maintaining these legacy services today requires significant time and resources which directly impacts the studios ability to support current and future projects like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite.

The Xbox 360 Servers For Halo Titles Are Being Shut Down Next Week

343 Industries will switch off the Xbox 360 game servers for a number of Halo titles on January 13, 2022, meaning a host of online services will be kaput as of next week.

Modes such as campaign, firefight, and spartan ops will remain accessible alongside custom games, forge mode, and split screen. Other services like matchmaking, fileshare, and challenges will, however, be laid to rest.

The Xbox 360 versions of seven Halo games will be affected in some capacity by the move, including Halo: Reach, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo Spartan Assault, and Halo Wars.

343 noted that games in Halo: The Master Chief Collection won’t be affected as they have been rebuilt and remastered to leverage different, modernized services.

The chart below explains how each Xbox 360 title will be impacted by the move, and indicates matchmaking and fileshare have already been stripped from titles including Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo Reach.

In a brief FAQ, 343 confirmed those players using backwards compatibility to play 360 titles will also be affected as the underlying content relies on legacy online services.

Xbox 360 Servers Not Shutting Down In November This Year

We have had enough reasons to know that we should not believe everything that the internet tells us, but lets add another one to that list. There have been a number of rumors suggesting that Microsoft will shut down the Xbox 360 servers one of these days, the most prominent one was that the servers will be discontinued in November this year.

However, the head of Xbox division at Microsoft, Phil Spencer has refuted all those rumors saying that they are not true.

Spencer was questioned on his official Twitter account whether it was true that sometime in November 2016, the xbox 360 live servers will be closed down, his reply was a plain no.

Phil Spencer

One of the reasons why people feared that the Xbox 360 servers will be turned off this year was the fact that something similar happened to the Xbox Live 1.0 servers that supported the original Xbox.

The original Xbox was launched in November 2001 and the servers lived for more than nine years before being shut down in April 2010 a little more than nine years later.

Now, if you look at the life of Xbox 360 servers they have already lasted for a longer time than that. Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005 and last years november was its tenth anniversary. Had Microsoft been wanting to keeping up with the practice we would have already said good bye to Xbox 360 live servers.

Thankfully that is not the case.

Options Remain For Halo Fans

Although the experience of playing this Xbox 360 collection of Halo games likely won’t be the same, most of the titles included in the wave of server shutdowns are not lost forever. The aforementioned Halo: The Master Chief Collection includes Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Halo 4, all of which retain online services as they’ve been rebuilt for modern hardware. Halo Wars: Definitive Edition on PC and Xbox One will also remain unaffected by the server closures, and fans of the real-time strategy subfranchise can also play 2017’s Halo Wars 2 via Xbox Game Pass.

Despite being lesser-known titles in the franchise, the top-down twin-stick shooter Halo: Spartan Assaultand its sequel Spartan Strike are also available on Game Pass as of this writing. The description for Spartan Assault even says players can “unlock new customizations for your Halo 4 career,” and it connected with The Master Chief Collection as far back as 2014.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Xbox Live Is Temporarily Down

What Halo’s Xbox 360 Server Sunsetting Will Look Like

Xbox 360 âHaloâ? Series Servers Shut Down in December 2021 â The ...

Developer 343 Industries outlined its plans in a Halo Waypoint blog post last month, announcing Xbox 360 servers will be turned off for Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 4, and Halo: Spartan Assault. People who own the games will still be able to play their story campaigns, but other features are impacted to varying degrees. For example, Spartan Assault and Halo Wars will not support Splitscreen or LAN play, but will have matchmaking despite it no longer being supported for Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and 4.

All the features becoming inaccessible after January 13 will not work for players using backwards compatibility on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S consoles, according to 343 Industries. It said, “The underling software is still the original Xbox 360 content and relies on legacy online services for some functions.” As a result, any achievements based on matchmaking or challenges, as well as Avatar awards tied to in-game activities will no longer be available. The impending sunset date has led to fans reminiscing about games like Halo 3, but it’s not all bad.

Whats weird here is, Xbox Live went down this May 7, and was fixed after an hour or two, but now , the Xbox Live servers are down again!

Earlier today , Xbox Live servers went down, and it started with entertainment apps like Netflix, Hulu and the like:

Halo And Metal Gear Solid 5s Servers To Be Shut Down

Know that from December 2021 onwards Halos game services wont work any longer. This means that you wont be able to play it on your Xbox one 360. However, you will still be able to play the game on other newer consoles.

These are the Xbox 360 Halo versions that will stop working- Halo 3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo Spartan Assault, Halo: Reach, Halo Wars, Halo 4, and Halo 3: ODST.

However, note that all the non-online features and aspects of the game should work. But, do know that since Halo is the biggest draw of Xbox 360 so it looks like the console will be effectively killed off finally when these Halo services become obsolete.

Also, making matters worse is the fact that game servers of Metal Gear Solid 5 are going offline as well. On May 31, 2022, the servers will be shut down forever. As such, this might mark the death of the Xbox 360. However, do note that nothing regarding server shutdowns have been announced for other games on the platform.

Now, server shutdowns are not uncommon. The main reason behind them is the constantly dwindling gamer base. However, the shutdown of Halo and MetalGearSolid5s servers might spell doom for Xbox 360 because these two games are the biggest draws of the console.

But do you want to keep on playing these two games? Then there might be a solution. Sometimes players band together among themselves and campaign to keep the servers running as well.
